49/2/10 Mutilate spec? What are the pros and cons?

While I'm not a long time veteran of WoW, I have been around long enough to know that most specs (of any real value) have already been acknowledged and documented somewhere on the internet. This aside and considered, I haven't found much info on this spec

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/rogue/talents.html?tal=32530310525213250105102000000000000000000000055000 00000000000000000

Today I specced mutilate (I'm level 59) and enjoyed it much for in comparison to sub/hemo and combat maces. Granted I know the experience could be much different at 70.

My question is: Is the above spec a decent combo spec for pve/pvp? I mean I know it isn't heavy combat, so it's not going to shine in pve, but I think as a mutilate spec it should be able to hold it's own, and with master of deception, along with a heavy assissination spec, I'd have to think it'd be pretty darn good for pvp (I mean didn't the number one or two rogue in the world have 50 or 52 points into assassination?). Anyways, please let me know what you think, the pros and cons are of this spec. Thanks.

Re: 49/2/10 Mutilate spec? What are the pros and cons?

PvP = ShS for many people.

Why?

Non-positional, huge surviveability, lots of talents for dominating the Arena/BG in terms of CC, roots, and seriously boosted AP/Agi.

Mutilate is still the prefered build for many, but while it works at lower levels, the massive resilience thats commonly encountered in BG's means that "serious" rogues who want to spec Mutilate need very high crit chances (30% seems a common number) and even then you're stuck with trying to get behind a target in order for it to do any damage while being very susceptible to taking damage yourself (No ShS for mobility, no Cheat Death, No Prep).

The same question arose on our realm forums recently, let me cut/paste a couple of replies:

You'll get mauled by any sub-specced rogues and while root resist/movement speed increase as well as Quick Recovery and cold blood are godly I just don't think its a competitive spec these days. Even with the revision to Imp Backstab you have to work really hard to carry around enough crit to make it worthwhile....but that said you could just try it and see how you get on.

The initial burst can be quite ferocious and Vile Poisons is quite horrible for a healer so with a decent team to support you it "might" work....but Sub has "The" PvP talents after the buff so its difficult to imagine Mutilate bringing anything better to the table.

I guess the bottom line is that we can't have it all. With the added agi/ap from the Sub Tree then you should have a lot of AP on tap (all things considered) so perhaps you're just suffering from the simple fact that you're used to the performance of Sub builds and wish for the halcyon days of the 3.5k mutilate crit.

I think that any crit-predicated build is pretty much S1/early S2 History, rather than a S3/S4 competitive spec.
.

That said, for pure PvE its quite powerful in terms of soloing as Mobs die so fast that you spend a minimal amount of time eating due to the burst damage. Personally I'd still take swords/fists/maces for levelling however, although thats personal preference. If it gets you to 70, it works.
