Ice Mage DPS
Hey all, I'm somewhat new too posting here, but I figured Id ask around and see if anyone has any idea about this. (sorry if this is in the wrong spot, feel free too move it)
Recently our guild got a couple new people, one of which is an ice mage, don't know his full talent build; but he is 41 deep into ice at least. (has the elemental) This guys gear is pretty decent for not having done much raiding or what not, but he's in blues and one or two greens, had a couple empty sockets too; yet somehow hes managing a personal dps of 750's-low 900's when raid buffed. this is in both over all run dps, as well as boss encounters. He's usually fighting for second or a close third spot on the damage meter, keeping up with people in mostly epics. Mostly I'm just really curious how hes doing this, as my impression was ice mage dps isn't that great in a raid environment. And his gear level makes it even more curious. I don't know how well his dps would scale with gear, but it seems like if his was on the same level as mine, he would be blowing me out of the water. I havn't spoken to him much personally, but I think hes supposedly using some kind of third party tool or website too help max his dps build. any thoughts or ideas? |

Re: Ice Mage DPS
Good frost mages can really bring the pain as far as DPS (expecially 40/0/21 frost mages, with one with 41+ in frost to be the chillbot).
Bad ones tend to grace the meters down with the feral tanks. |

Re: Ice Mage DPS
Bottom line is he's just a very skilled player.
A while back someone asked on the forums in what order should the classes fall in when it came to max dps. One responeded with a list Great player Great player Ok player Shitty player shitty player /gkick player Although he was probably just being an ***, there is a grain of truth it what he said. When comes to dpser's a players skill will show in his dps. Yes gear counts for a lot, but I've also seen fully Kara geared locks and mages (and hunters too for that matter) that can't break 600 dps on boss fights. I walked into Kara with blues and greens and had a higher dps than that. Knowing the best spell rotations, which peices of gear give the best stats, etc. goes a long long way in increasing your personal dps. Thank God he's not arcane fire or else he'd realy be hurting your feelings. |

Re: Ice Mage DPS
I have a raiding frost mage that is deep frost. Timing and execution of the water elemental and keeping it alive is critical to a frost mages DPS. Pop him out at the wrong time and he is toast, don't position him correctly or move him from AOE damage, he is toast.
I admit it takes me alot of concentration and awareness and no farting around on vent etc...to pull max DPS from my build (I had to compete for raid spots with my frost mage cause my guild truly believed fire was the only viable raid spec.) But after consitantly pulling 750+ DPS (on boss encounters, trash no longer matters) I no longer had to compete. I have topped equally geared fire mages on the meters, beaten warlocks but my biggest challenge was a GOOD hunter (My previouse guild actually had two of those)but I certainly wasn't having as much fun as they were because I had to realy concentrate when my WE was out. Multi tasking is not my Forte`. |

Re: Ice Mage DPS
i just got a frost mage.. and im at level 60 but im impressed by the damage it is doing. I might go fire someday, but for now the icebolts go for 1000 damage and crits above 2k .. i can't wait to get some decent gear and do more. Its more fun than the lock for me atm. But maybe thats because level 70 kind of got bored for me at some point.

Re: Ice Mage DPS
several things imo can make the frost mage competitive.
aside from having a well timed water elemental, bear in mind frost mages also gains haste, icy vein is on a 3min CD, if you're deep frost with ice floe this is reduced to 2min something coupled with Cold snap you can literally go icy vein water ele => cold snap => icy vein water ele. 40 seconds of haste is pretty leet stat balance is also the 2nd easiest of the 3 dps cloth caster next to spriest. spriests needs 76 hit rating on gear to cap hit ( including talents ), frost mages needs 126 hit rating ( with 3/3 elemental precision). if you maintain a good +damage and +crit ratio you'll easily do well considering you have +10% crit free |

Re: Ice Mage DPS
I just got my mage to 70 and I'm wondering if there was a site for mages along the lines of the "den".
This site has helped me so much with my lock, one for the mage would make things so much more enjoyable. |
