Mage: Bridging the gear gap between Kara and T6

OK, I was unsure if I should post this here or in the rate my gear section but I thought it would cause less confusion here. I will use the appropriate format though

I realize this is a lock forum but I'm sure there are knowledgable people around with mage alts. I have never found a website as good for mages (or any other class) so I'm hoping you'll take pity on me.

Talent Build: Currently 10/0/51 frost. However I would like to switch to 2/48/11 fire but with my current gear all of the spreadsheets put the frost spec as higher damage.

Mana: 8621 (without int buff)
+Damage: 800 frost, 754 all
+Hit: 158 (i'm way over the frost hit cap, 126 I think, and just a few below the fire cap of 164)
+Crit: 15% or 18% with Molten Armor
Have you read the gearing guide? A million times, it doesn't match up exactly though. Hit is the biggest difference, it seems too easy for me to go over the cap!

Items/Slots in need of immediate upgrade:

• Chest, gloves, rings, trinket or anything else glaring you see

Upgrades you are currently working on:
List any upgrades you are currently working on and where you are at. For example:

• Neck: Need to stop being lazy and pvp to get the S4 haste neck next week
• Trinket: I've ran heroic SP a few times for that trinket and lost it to a holy priest the one time it dropped. (I also lost the sword off Murmur to a holy priest!)
• Gloves: Attuman is a tart and refuses to drop his gloves, also had bad luck getting into MagT to try for those gloves.
• Chest - I passed on the one from Kara, which I think was the right decision. I'd lose 18 damage over my current one (plus hit) and I don't know that the proc made up for that. Still hoping for the on from Heroic MagT someday.

In all seriousness, I have Kara type gear in a T6 guild (5/5, 7/9). I rerolled there a few months ago and so I'm quite behind the curve gear wise but I'd like to be able to raid with them sometime before Wrath. They do not run T5 content at all. So I am trying to bridge the gap in anyway possible. At the moment I have fairly easy access to Kara. With a bit better gear I could probably get into one of the many PuG Gruul/Mag/ZAs that are run on my server. There has also been talk about letting me come for some of the earlier, easy bosses in MH/BT so I may have access to Cuffs of Devastation, Chronicle of Dark Secrets, The Maelstrom's Fury and Slippers of the Seacaller.

At this time I have about 55 badges. I have been thinking about buying the trinket but I want to have enough to buy the haste OH if I ever get decent Main Hand. I may go ahead and buy the trinket as soon as I get 76 badges. On the other hand the ring is also nice but hit is less of a problem for me as I have said. I have the Scryer's Bloodgem and the hit cloak from MagT with a veiled noble topaz in it in the bank so losing the hit off some of my current pieces isn't too much of a concern.

While I am willing to pvp it isn't my favorite thing and I am not a tailor.

Any feedback on accessible upgrades would be appreaciated. I have spent hours playing with loot ranking tools and stuff but I think in the end I just confused myself more. Trying to balance what I can get now and what I may be able to have soon just makes the decisions harder.

Also, if anyone knows of a spreadsheet comparable to Luelliers for mages let me know! Rawr just confuses me half the time

Honestly? The 2.4 badge gear is going to be your biggest friend here. That and Guardian's Silk Bracers/Boots/Belt come Season 4. Hit up every pug kara/gruuls/mag/za that you can in hopes of a ton of badges and some good ZA loot, and that should see you ready to at least attempt to compete in BT/Hyjal.

If they're willing to take you while you're slightly undergeared, do so. You'll be gaining badges, DKP and the occasional item once everyone else has it.. but at least you're there, right?

s4 gear aside from neck has ratings.... if you don't like to pvp let alone arena you're screwed =p

first and foremost I guess I'll do the usual stuff like spewing the "enchant your gear" line

honestly tho only your helm is lacking and your glove / bracer are questionable

next most important thing is to decide to spec. as you correctly stated frost and fire has different hit rating frost ( 126 ) and fire ( 163 ). deciding which spec will make gearing a tad easier.

lastly there's a TLDR section at the bottom just incase you lost me after line 1

in terms of gear

helm => I'd still prefer Spellstrike but i think your one is fine, I know my lock used it

neck => S4, crit > haste personally but up to you.

shoulder => Fel-tinged Mantle

chest => again as you said Herioc MgT or Badge Chest

bracer => Fury of the Ursine or S3 or Bracer off Rage

glove => Enslaved Doomguard Soulgrips

boots => Boots of Incantations

rings => Ring of Recurrence & Fused Nethergon Band

trinkets => Icon ( as always =p ) and Darkmoon Crusade, failing that Quag's Eye works.

weapon => S2 1H / Netherspite OH or prince's dagger

wand => The Black Stalk ( herioc UB wand )

Thanks so much for the feedback Coud. While I basically knew what to get I was a bit overwhelmed. I think your response helped clarify my thoughts a bit. Ironically I just made a prioritized badge gear list for my friend's resto shaman but I was struggling to do the same for myself

As for the enchants, I know some of mine are subpar to say the least. The chest came that way when I bought it and the gloves and bracer were supposed to be temporary pieces of gear I seem unable to upgrade. I should probably put good enchants on them soon, that will guarentee I get an upgrade! I am currently working on rep for the head enchant.

yea I think those frost damage gloves was like one of THE best gloves i could get on my mage pre badge gear due to attumen hating me... in fact i don't think i've ever saw the glove drop off him... =.='

I think your enchants are fine tbh. I have 3 70s, 68 and 69... I can understand using "cheap" enchants, altho mine is the case of being utterly broke =p
