Why are Locks rerolling to DK's?
So I was sitting and reading a thread about a lock who wanted to reroll to a DK when Wrath of the Lich King came out, and it hit me that this seems to be a statement trend that is seen more often among locks than other clases. Now why is this? Are locks feeling more more left behind than other classes with new stuff? Are locks feeling they haven't got a chance in PvP? Are locks afraid they will loose their chance for PvE due to not having a role? All three things have been used as reasons to why locks want to reroll a DK, but I think the reason lies elsewhere! Think back, waaayyy back to when you made your lock in vanila WoW (or in beta like me). Why did you chose the lock in the first place? Me? I wanted a pet class, who were able to control a fight. I was down right sad that the necromancer that I loved in Diablo II and Warcraft III weren't a class in WoW. Now they give us the DK, who can choose an unholy tree with diseases, corpse explosion and undead minions. Although I haven't tried the DK myself, I have a feeling that I will give alot of my love to the DK when I get Wrath of the Lich King, and that he will be a strong candidate for my main class. End of the story is: I'm going to try out a DK because he is more in line with what I wanted in WoW back when I started (necromancer like - he can go mellee as well as magic as was the original idea with leather armor for locks... and look at the firestone which was made for this idea as well). I chose the lock back then because he was the best candidate, but now the DK is seriously threatening him! |

Interesting question  I wasn't aware of that many people re-rolling to DK from Warlock but I can definately try and give you my reasons: When I first started playing RPG's (a very long time ago when the only choice was pen and paper, and D&D had just reached its 2nd edition) I gravitated towards melee classes rather than spell-slilngers. There wasn't any perception that melee was "better" than casters, it was simply that I preferred the more visceral feel of those classes who got up close and personal. As time moved on I of course played my share of casters, but I remember a Dragon magazine article entitled "The Anti Paladin" which really crystallised my feelings on a really nice hybrid of spells and melee with a strong RP background...as time moved on I also grew to love the Bladesingers (remember the Elven Handbook?) and the Dwarven Champions as well simply because they allowed me to approach that role-playing niche from different outlooks.....this continued across several systesms and characters (far, far too many to really go into) until such time as I played Warcraft and I found that I didn't really enjoy Paladins, but Rogues while satisfying my melee likes, didn't have the edge I enjoyed so much..... I rolled a Warlock to satisfy to play a character with that kind of edge (read: kewl spells and necromancy or demonology) but of course without the melee aspect it was still sadly dissapointing.....then of course the DK appeared and its a nearly perfect class choice for me. As yet, I haven't really considered the performance of the Warlock (I feel its going to be perfectly good in all areas) so its not a case of choosing the "best" or most powerful character - its simply one that appeals to me on more levels.

I'm going with Theleb on this. I'm not giving up on my warlock by any means. But the whole feel, the kind of class the Death Knight is appeals to me and I definitely want to at least give it a try. |

3 fairly simple reasons for me: 1) I gravitate towards dark magic users in RPGs. Until now Lock was the only choice. I rolled my first before The Burning Crusade so winning the class lottery had nothing to do with it. 2) I've always fancied playing a melee character but none of the others truly appealed to me aesthetically. See above. 3) I'm not worried about Vaell getting left out of groups and instances because I play with friends rather than a wow corporation. However we need a bit of flexibility with tanks and compared to my friends I don't have the variety of level capped alts as they do. I'd like to be able to step up and fill that role when needed while satisfying both 1) and 2). I suppose the 4th less persuasive reason is that for a long time I've RPed the possibility that Vaell's dad had become a death knight, though presumed dead. -- In summary, I don't think it will be predominantly any particular class rolling Death Knights. Because they are a new class the majority of account holders will be trying them out at the very least. |

Because they are more rounded, better designed and a lot better fun than being shat upon from a great height (aka Wrath of the Lich King PvP!). For me, at least. p.s. I am Vaell's dad. Yeah, yeah, orc I know but hey, PRP still lives? |

I may buck the trend; don't feel any real hurry to roll a DK 'cos I want to get up to raiding new 10 persons asap - while they're still fresh and exciting. Won't have time to learn/level DK. NB. DK's do look fun, which may explain the interest...but...just had a quick blast on PTR and affliction was a lot of fun....grinding in skettis I could be utterly irresponsible, pull everything I could see including letting an elite tree batter me, without any real chance of dying and 1400 dps on a boss (compared to old heroic 1200 SB spam) felt nice....it's all a lot more hectic than old style dps lock, but ...hectic is fun Overall; DK is a good addition imo and goodluck to all who are excited about giving it a go. |

Sinister classes are right up my ally as I'm an evil person. But I don't think DK will replace the Lock as my main as it feels a bit too gimmicky at this point. |

I shall not be rolling DK as anything other than an experimental alt when I get the time. Lock for me is still the evil sneaky bastard with the nasty spells, DoTs and Demons, who would kill you without blinking (rock on Richard!) and for a bit of RP, probably the evil adviser behind the DK (who is still really your Pally with a few nasty spells). And Wrath of the Lich King seems to bring a nice edge to our ability to really be evil to those lesser classes out ther :-) They are gonna hate our Demons without a shadow of a doubt! DK's evil? Pah! You just cant be evil enough if you melee in my humble opinion! |
