Tanking in WotLK and healing mechanics changes

Posting this under 'Other Class' since it's primarily about tanking and healing. Does mention DPS however, which is why I'm posting it in the first place.

One of the design goals in LK was to make tanking more fun and I daresay a little easier because it could be very challenging. I have tanked and healed A LOT on various classes and I feel pretty confident saying that tanking can be much harder than healing on some fights (on others it is reversed). Challenging the dps classes is harder, but you often see it in the form of berserk timers -- if the dps can't maximize their output, then the raid is going to wipe at no fault of the healers. Repositioning fights often tax the dps characters, though to be fair, they often tax the healers too.

I'm pretty happy with the current state of tanking, modulo polishing up a few bits here and there. Healing is something we have committed to taking a good hard look at now, so threads like this are helpful. Unlike tanking, it is a harder problem to solve, in part because some healers like the way healing works now just fine thank you, and risk walking away from it if we make very dramatic changes. The kinds of dramatic changes that get suggested a lot are things like causing damage to heal, having to heal through the main game window and not the health bars, having combo points and that sort of thing. You may say "That sounds awesome!" but many other players say "Yech."

Others say just having better UI, having more diverse spells to rely on, not having to time things so tightly, or having something to do besides healing will make their game more fun.

We do think the game can handle more diversity in healing mechanics than it can in tanking mechanics. In other words, it's okay for healers to have niches moreso than the tanks. This is largely because raids require more healers than tanks.

Eh... healing is always a thankless task, in any MMO/RPG. Making us jump through more hoops is not always a good thing. Making it easier won't bring more healers to the table.

Some boss fights in Karazhan were extremely taxing (Shade of Aran, which required quick heals, movement and a lot of luck). Others were much gentler on the healers (Nightbane, Curator) where we could mostly focus on healing and were mostly hoping that the DPS would get the mob dead before we ran out of mana.

Healing is only thankless when people don't realize how hard healing is. My healers get tons of love, because I've healed and know what that's like.

Of course, that's only when they are not sucking and letting people die...

Re: Tanking in WotLK and healing mechanics changes

I can only express some dread regarding healing from a resto shaman perspective.

First off, I can't do it without GRID addon. Secondly, I find that guildies will clutch at straws to get a healer and shamans are not MT healers, by design of Blizzard.

I hate saying no, but I hate wiping endlessly more.

Perhaps Blizzard should pump up shamans to be able to MT, which would require a nerfing of some degree to Chain Heals to break us from an extremely OP status of raid healers.

This would at least put one more bonafide MT healing class into the dwindling healing pool.

I have to disagree with the idea that shamans aren't MT healers. While HW spam isn't the most efficient use of a shaman, between earthliving and ancestral fort, there is a lot to be said for single target healing. I haven't leveled my shaman yet, so I can't comment on how things really are at 80, but I never had an issue with single target healing, and given the new tools we got, I can't see how it was made worse. Yes, shaman will never be, and should never be, the preferred MT healer because of the power of our raid healing, but I think we're far from not being able to fill that role when needed.

Re: Tanking in WotLK and healing mechanics changes

While being a healer in a pug is a thankless job most guild poor the love and affection on there healers. Especially in my realm as everyone is short on healers for everything.

I say one thing at the end of every boss fight and every raid.

"Thank your tanks and your healers folks they got ya here."

I am DPS and I realize it is important we are good to, but we can usually get by with one less than great DPS compare that to healers and tanks where either they are good or we are dead.

I think it has been general consensus from guild healers that they like it the way it is now. They don't want to many drastic changes.

I was glad to see that tanks are having a bit more fun than they used to.
