A general DPS Question for all classes...

I have several toons in which I am leveling. They all have different roles and functions for me in the game. I was wondering if anyone could help with something. Have you ever wondered if what you were doing was on par or off course, I am wondering that this very moment.

This is what I am looking for, A database that has put together the details on what is poor, fair, average, better then average, and your Uber DPS.

Example I have a 63 Feral Druid that does 300 DPS in crafted, quested, and instance gear. Is that good or better then average or lower then it should be? All the facts that I can find all are from an end game perspective (regardless of what class) and based on end game gear, spells, and talent builds.

What should a level (45-65) (you fill in class) be doing as far as DPS goes. Or has no one really made a scale?

I have found (AT LEAST FOR ME ) that the more DPS I can do the faster I can move through the content (i.e. group quests solo). Now I know that someone will say things like gear and DPS do not matter while leveling, I disagree. They are not as important as the end game content but important all the same.

Re: A general DPS Question for all classes...

DPS doesn't matter while leveling. (Sorry, had to say it)

The problem you run into is that the people that establish the baselines don't care about a level 72 mage wearing only quested gear. It doesn't matter to them, so they don't find out. Where we get all our numbers is from the hardest of the hardcore, who pore over WWS parses nightly, model damage rotations, and debate the optimal DoT application order for a given boss pull. Those people spent a day at level whatever powerleveling. Personally I don't even bother running any sort of meter while leveling. All that matters is getting through whatever you need to as fast as possible without dying. How I do that compared to others might matter as an academic exercise, but you aren't going to find the level of data needed to establish a baseline.

The only thing that really matters is if you are happy with your pace. If you feel like you should be doing more, dig around, play with specs, and spend some time with a target dummy. But the odds of finding someone else who decided to do that are very, very small. That guy was more worried about hitting the next level than debating optimal talent usage along the way.

Re: A general DPS Question for all classes...

The reason it doesn't matter is that the best thing to do is to simply level. Time spent getting gear, crafting, glyphing, enchanting is all better spent just questing for more XP and levels.

You should still read up on rotations, spells, etc, but that stuff doesn't always apply 100% until you reach top level. The stuff that's important are things like "don't clip your dots" and "never stop casting" and "use your meta & trinkets every time they are up". That kinda thing. Using something like recount to learn and do as well as you can is always good, but don't spend too much time trying to figure out where you stand vs. other DPS... it's not worth it until 80.

I do not spend "any" extra time farming or "going" after something. What I was trying to convey was an example of what I was using. Did not mean to imply I was seeking any special gear.

Re: A general DPS Question for all classes...

I recently leveled a shaman from 1 to 80 and all I did was every 10 levels or so I bought the best weapons available and put the best enchants on them and my gear. Now I have the benefit of having virtually every profession maxed on one toon or another so the enchants were easy to get and rather cheap to do as well as pots and such. I never had to worry about dps but virtually every quest that I ever needed help with while leveling other toons was easily soloable with this one. The fact of the matter is that no one really cares about dps until you reach max level. Mainly because its faster to simply quest and not run instances unless you are getting a run through. You will get better gear by doing the dungeon quests and running instances, but it will slow you down leveling.

If all you are looking for is a barometer then I would say that if the quest says it requires 3 and you can easily solo it then you are doing pretty good dps.

Re: A general DPS Question for all classes...

While that may be true... without taking time to do that farming or running something for certain gear, you can't really change your DPS much. So if it's good or not compared to other classes - if we could tell you that - does not really do much if you can't change it anyway.

Certainly you want to try to maximize your DPS - but only to a point, and only if it doesn't take time away from just questing. Kiralyn explained why you are unlikely to get much of a comparison in any case, and on top of that things vary SO greatly from level to level as you get new spells/ranks that it's not that meaningful.

The best you can do in this regard, IMO, would be to run instances and use Recount to see how you stack up vs. similar classes with similar gear levels. In the end though, simply using something like Recount and trying different rotations and spells to optimize while you quest/level is probably the best thing you can do.

Thanks Agnar that seems like a good barometer. I really had not thought of it that way.

I tend to agree with your statement in a way... a lot of bad habits can be broken more easily while levelling than once you get to maximum level. If you don't know how you scale in terms of dps at your level, then how would you know if there was anything wrong with what you're doing? And I would hate to find out that my spell rotation or spec was all wrong when I'm failing it up in a raid my first time around (when you're presumably trying to impress the raid leader.)

As far as what a level 63 Druid should be doing DPS-wise, I can't help you there. The best way I can tell you to get a good idea of how well you're doing is to run instances with other players. Other players will be quick to tell you what you're doing wrong (especially if its a PUG) and if you want honest feedback, just ask.

The only time I've really been grumpy about my dps is when it was lower than the tanks.

That's just...wrong.

Damn paladins and undead mobs.

Re: A general DPS Question for all classes...

It was mentioned earlier the only reason we have theorycrafting out the wazoo for level 80s is because that's where the brainy people crunching the numbers are at...they just care about endgame, so nobody bothers crunching numbers for anything less than 80. And I agree that that is true--it's very, very, very difficult to find out numbers for anything other than level 80. (I started reading the Den before I got deathcoil on my warlock main, and boy was I confused before I realized that it was something I'd get after I had leveled higher!)

You *might* want to look on PVP-oriented sites for the info you seek...since some people do level twinks to 19 or 29 or 39 or whatever, there's bound to be a bit of theorycrafting about the PVP success of a class at a particular level. I do know there's lists of "best in slot" for each bracket of twinks scattered around the web...although of course, it IS oriented towards PVP and not PVE. But I think it's the closest you'll be able to dig up.
