Re: A general DPS Question for all classes...

Its really hard to judge one's performance by looking at solo dps.

If you really do care, go and run instances with people of your level and gear, and see how you do. There's no need to top meters or so, but you should be able to do your part of the damage. If people with comparable gear and level outdps you by a large amount, you should be a bit worried.
I was running UK normal with my 72 dk, a level 70 pally tank, 68 healer and 73 shaman. We were doing fine, but the level 75 mage that also was with us barely made half as much damage as the tank! If you end up being like that mage, you should be worried. Otherwise its just fine I guess.

That is useful in some instances, but then you get something similar to my Gnomeregan run last weekend: As a prot warrior, with quest gear (and crafted blue chest) I was on top of the damage purely due to Thunderclap which was 40% of my damage (I had recount running cause I was too lazy to turn it off). I was even on top for last boss due to Revenge crits (over 300 damage each).

At lower levels, you have no hit, low crit, gear is usually what you get, so damage can be very streaky (like my revenge crits show, 4 in row with around 6% crit when usually my best dps is Rend - never thought I'd say that).

Also, before you get to heroics, casters will have lower damage purely due to speed with which mobs die. I was leveling a shadow priest, and SW:P boosts my damage by a lot (around 20% due to talents and glyphs) but usually didn't do any damage itself cause mobs died faster. With lock, mob died as shadowbolt was flying to it, and there was no point in dotting. With rogue I just spammed Backstab or SS (depending on spec).

So, while you can look at your DPS while leveling, don't think too much about it .

PS: My DPS on lock jumped by about 50% when I got from 79 to 80.

Re: A general DPS Question for all classes...

Having high dps during leveling is nice to have. I have an warlock fully kitted in heirloom stuff and best crafted gear he can use, I stack spellpower as much as possible. At L63 he out-dps'ed DK's at L66 in most instances. At 66 I have nearly 900 spellpower self-buffed. Comparing your dps to others will give you some hint but considering how average players suck horribly it probably won't mean much. It's not quite normal to see my felguard alone out-dps a L64 rogue.

And I would hate to find out that my spell rotation or spec was all wrong when I'm failing it up in a raid my first time around (when you're presumably trying to impress the raid leader.)
Exactly what I am trying to do, not make bad habits. I am trying to "craft" my play style as I level. On previous toons I know I have made mistakes and it caused some issues at higher levels. This time around I want to be on top as best as I can be.

It was nice to see today that a few people actually answered my question instead of teeing off on how I was wrong and wasting my time by even asking. There are a couple of really good thoughts presented here. One, seeking input from other classes and second referring to PVP sources…things I had not thought of that at all, good call. Just wanted to thank those who shared thier thoughts and for leaving me some good advice.

Mavric, I reduced your font size to the normal size for text. I'm not entirely certain why you had it set so high, if it was for emphasis or just a mistake, but I didn't see a reason for it to be that large. Anyways, thought you should know.

Cheers!

Re: A general DPS Question for all classes...

The reason you wont find any accurate theory craft on the dps you should be hitting is that blizzard is changing game mechanics all the time, and while the talent changes are mostly focussed on the end game dps, ie 71 talent points, your dps will likely vary simply based on which position you are in the tree.

A good example of this is when I was levelling, I levelled affliction as it was much better dps and I enjoyed the playstyle, but as soon as I hit 53-54(there was a reason why getting the felguard straight away wasn't worth it at the time, years ago) I got the Felguard because at that point it became the best levelling spec and allot of fun too.

The best way to test your relative dps is to run dungeons and compare recount, you should be 5% below pure dps classes as an average, however, dont take these figures as rule, since skill and the value of your current spec at 54 points will have a big impact.

good luck!

"theory craft" mehh!

I think people our over analyzing what I meant by what I was asking. Maybe I phrased my question incorrectly. I am not looking for "theory crafting". All I was after was "Is 300 dps low or above average".

To Liche thanks for your input as I am using Recount mostly cause I use it in raids and did not make it usable only for a particular toon. So since its there and mostly cause its habit I look at.

If this helps at all...
On my dk alt I'm doing about 450 dps at level 62 or 63; I forgot what level he is now...

If I remember I was doing right around 300dps at around level 60 on my lock. I got up to about 600 at 70 I think? It seems like so long ago now.

When leveling up my lock I had the exact same question and I think I got the same answers... "Don't worry about DPS until 80." I can empathize with you. I wasn't worried so much about my dps as I was my "rotation" for when I did get to 80. As a result I would just spend about 20 min each night trying things out on the test dummies.

Re: A general DPS Question for all classes...

Well, the biggest issue with DPS pre-80 is that leveling specs are usually terrible for DPS and also don't scale well for DPS. So while I appreciate people wanting to know how much DPS you are doing relative to another class, it may not make sense. eg I essentially leveled for survivability which means Felguard or Voidwalker as a pet, Soullink, and if possible throwing in Siphon Life.

Also, if you look at a typical pre-80 lock, most are still experimenting with talents so the talent tree isn't even fully optimized anyway for one thing or another unless that lock has really planned things out well according to a guide or their own research.

So it's not necessarily fair to look at a DK and say WOW that DK (or insert another class here) is doing so much damage compared to me because blizzard didn't design the talent trees to necessarily be balanced while leveling. They are more balanced at 80.
