As of now with all the feedback I've been getting. I think I'd have more fun with the shammy but the priest would be more useful for the guild. Tough call.

Re: Shammy or Priest for heal+DPS

I would vote priest.
My brother got me into this game, and he is a beasty shadow priest. Leveling it (which I had a small part in from 70 to 80) was not bad at all - in fact, I loved it. Very mana efficient without eating your health, incredible strength DoTs, and even in the Blizzard description, it mentons "melting faces."

haha you had to go and throw off the voting didnt you.
so now it's 3 a piece... hmmm how bout this, next voter for the win lol.

A but off topic:
While I'm here I know you are all much better with lore do you have any name suggestions for either?

Thanks guy/gals! I appreciate all the help! I think I'm going to try to roll a Shammy despite the priest being a bit easier. I'll make a priest after =D. Wish me luck! I have always love a good challenge and that seems to be the essence of the shammy (that and they are closely related to locks if not quite in a good way.)

Re: Shammy or Priest for heal+DPS

--more inc walls of text--

I vote shaman
Am I biased? yes; I play a shaman when not wreaking havoc on my lock, and healing is relatively straight forward. I helped a guildie priest friend set up grid+clique and there were seemingly 5000 spells to bind.

yes, we dont have many instants, but you can quickly dish out a lot of heals with a RT+LHW,LHW rotation. Resto shamies are getting some love next patch. Along with the chain heal buffs, they are finally addressing the totems. That was my biggest gripe; having to initially weave in totems between heals during a fight where you have to charge in (e.g. emalon)

Mana is rarely an issue. I have healed as far as getting 6 bosses down in uld10, and was top effective heals by a good margin. truth be told I basically use mana tide and/or a pot every fight, but I do that more as precaution b/c I dont want to be stuck oom. But you have to stack mp5/int of course. I have somewhere upwards of 500 mp5 while casting raid buffed. Coud, chain heal is the shaman's most efficient heal, even if it doesnt jump. But you cant just spam it in ulduar like you can in naxx lol.

DPSing as ele is boring, but very effective (I pull down ~3.3k dps on dummies and my ele gear is far from stellar. 1/2 of it is from my resto set, i just picked up hit gear where i could, Im finally a little over 300). I never played end game as enh, but I run with an enh shammy in my 25m ulduar raid guild and he goes great dps (usually in the top 5, somewhere behind my lock of course hehe).

Its easier to gear up initially since youre proficient in 3 types or armor as someone else mentioned, and when the mp5 mail drops, its almost automatically yours lol. Lest we forget shaman brings the best raid buff to the table- bloodlust/heroism! You can ankh and rez a group after a wipe preventing a long corpse run (eg 4HM!!).

Bottom line, unless youre looking to fill a tanking roll, a shaman provides versitle buffs via totems, you can single target or group heal well, and just look far cooler than the squishy priests. I will end my rambling now, hope this helped some with the selection of your new shaman

edit: i just realized Im a day late with this one, story of my life. GL with your shammy Carnall

Re: Shammy or Priest for heal+DPS

I appreciate the input! I was actually tenuously toying with the idea of leveling both because I am a little afraid of healing with the shammy but I think you may have swayed me to just shammy it all the way to 80. I just made him last night. A level 1 Nemuraan. The story behind him is just vague enough for me to not be breaking any lore.
As of now I have 39 emblems I can spend on an heirloom. I can get more rather easily so what should I get for him? The mace, the shoulders, or the 2 handed axe? I do kind of want to level him as ele btw. Can you put the shaman weapon enhancements on an heirloom?

Re: Shammy or Priest for heal+DPS

you should level both, well actually all 4... I'm liking the difference between a druid pally shammy and priest, granted a pally and shammy is largely similar.

i rarely use CH, riptide / LHW for me is more powerful and effective. in 25s i can run upward to 50% crit with AA accounting for a good deal of healing... as for naxx... yea let's not talk about it, i've practically soloed heal most of 10naxx and have 3 healed naxx25... imo that instance was a dismal failure in terms of teaching raiders the basic of raiding.

re lvling, no matter what spec you choose, grab the shoulders. that 10% extra XP is a very nice boost ( it also stacks with the midsummer pole dancing buff ). after that I would prob go mace if you're ele. not quite sure if there's any enhancement weapon beside the 2h axe

Re: Shammy or Priest for heal+DPS

Thanks! Now if only we can get a den for shamans.... Akasha? Perniciousiousisis...(hmm too many letters sorry) ? Lol, cause I know you have nothing better to do. =P
Do you (or anyone really) have any suggested tips or sites for information before I venture out into the google world yet again?

Re: Shammy or Priest for heal+DPS

gl finding sites, I read a fair few WoW blogs and none of them focus on shammy exclusive which can't be said for the other classes.

for lvling, just experiment ( that's half the fun in lvling imo, figuring out what your talent does etc ). for endgame read the thinktank on EJ. some of the wow.com arcticles ain't bad either

Re: Shammy or Priest for heal+DPS

Not read through all of this but i had the same decision to make when deciding i wanted to level a healer. Ok, i was tempted to roll a druid or paladin, great all round class. BUT since my warlock was my first character and took a while to get the hang on playing, now i know i can play one properly i feel very pleased with myself, so then i felt tempted to find a class that isn't too easy, isn't too common and one which is tricky to play right. So i chose a shaman mainly on the basis that you can cast, heal or melee and have very interesting features which are very different to other classes (totems for example).

Yes melee would be a nice change from casting, but i am also levelling a DK and i've got the DK for that ;). My partner plays a druid, and i have to say they are pretty fun to play. Choose a class and stick with it, and enjoy it. I am levelling as ele because the idea is i want to learn to heal as i level. It is very easy to heal at lower levels with one spell but it's nice standing back and not trying to beat dps meters for once. It will be an interesting journey, and i am enjoying it so far. So i will say shammy on that basis, although to be honest i've not even hit level 20 so i've got alot to find out.
