Mage question

When I first played the game in 2005/6 my main was a mage...I pretty much forgot about him when I rolled a lock. I revisited this alt and wanted to level in northrend for some extra $ to support my other chars. The gear obviously isn't the greatest, it's level 70 BC blues. I took others into kara, etc. the mage would have bored me to tears.

For the 70-80 grind, what is the best means these days? I was always frost, but arcane seems to be getting a lot of attention these days. Is frost still the best? If not, and arcane is an option, what is the best build and spell rotation to use?

Thanks folks!

Re: Mage question

Frost is good for soloing thanks to the shield and elemental. I think its also the most mana efficient. Arcane is generally used for end game stuff, but i've seen a few people level with it.

Re: Mage question

i have a 64 mage who is arcane. I absolutely love it. Lots of punch and if you end up with low health/mana you have 2 minute!!! evocation. Its back up before you know it. I would definitely try it out. my mage is on US Sargeras under the name "Egamage"

I leveled as frost before i hit 60 and found it rather dull, i do admit it is very effective and definitely probably still the top leveling spec but i found arcane to fun to go back to frost.

Re: Mage question

frost ain't that great tbh. alot of the elites can no longer be kited but the effect of having shields and double elemental to bounce aggro is still pretty useful for soloing elites assuming they don't hit like a truck which most do...

if you have a 80 friend to drag along for elites then level as either fire or arcane imo, both provide some decent damage output to kill things before they even get close to you

Re: Mage question

frost is nice when you like to AoE farm... round up 10+ mobs, freeze them, press a few buttons and collect loot. Eat mana, redo.

If you have the rested bonus it really is a nice way to level, and you don't spend a lot of time travelling between quest hubs. But as far as I remember from my lock, northrend wasn't that great for fighting multiple mobs at once. They always run away :/

Re: Mage question

as I was lvling my mage (who is 80 now) I started as frost, then when I got to outlands I switched to arcane which had a lot of bang for its buck so to speak, having a spell on a 4 sec CD which hit like a truck, improved evocation and intellect made it easy for grinding and leveling.

In Northrend I switched to fire, and to be honest it was a lot of fun. Blast wave is truly a fun spell as well as dragon's breath and stuff. For fire leveling dip into frost for the nice fire/frost imp damage since they go hand in hand (Frostbolt --> fireball --> w/e you want) and you get improved slowing effects

EDIT: When you get frostfire bolt, keep in mind what you want to spec into, but I suggest going into both still but just firing FFB and not fireball/frostbolt

Leveling a mage is fun since there is a lot you can mix/match and switch around here are there, blink/frost nova/ice block there is a lot of potential for having a ton of fun. Have fun with it! enjoy it! counter-spell other locks, its truly explosive!
