How to Destroy a hunter
We have a lot of threads going around about dealing with hunters. Let's face it with the patch they're even more of a threat then before and they are dropping crazy damage on us Warlocks. Yet we are still the great over powered class, so how do we exactly deal with these foes?
1. Their pet is the main thing that locks tend to not deal with, a lot of us like to cast far away and be stiff as theres a thread on this Here. If you stay in one place and ignore their pet your going to die. 2. Curse of Weakness is your friend, it can lessen the damage and if your affliction you can siphon life the pet. 3. Your Summon has to be attacking the hunter, the hunter having 2 enemies on him at once and you only having the pet. It's a 2 on 1, and this is where you run in like a mad man (or woman) and cast your dots on him, and then send a death coil into him. If we take it your a 60, the hunter will be near death, then you can hopefully finish him off with searing pain or if your lucky and didn't re-spec all the way down one tree, cast shadowburn and win. The hunter class is an ever growing nuisance that is constantly harrassing us, just make sure your not far away from the hunter, keep it close and personal. Hell if you want to humilate them, add a few whacks with your staff. |

Stand on top of hunter at all times, CoEx if he's slippery. If he can't get out of melee range, he can't shoot you with nasty aimed shots, etc.
CoW+Siphon life on pet Fear+DoT+Drain hunter. If you have your succi out, seduce hunter, fear pet If they get the jump on you, you're likely gonna be snared and dead before you can even get into melee range. -Gritz |

Re: How to Destroy a hunter
Truer words have never been spoken. When ever I see a hunter, I do the opposite of what I normally do and I run at the hunter. They'll usually spend the next couple momments getting away from me and by that time they're loaded with DoTs and I just fear or drain life.

Re: How to Destroy a hunter
Well there are two main problems you will have to deal with, at 2.0
- Scatter shot + silence : The pet is very weak, it's mainly there to interrupt your casts. Slap a CoW on it, corruption if you nightfall, and siphon life if you have it. Running at the hunter while putting an amp'd CoEx on him is good, but you'll have to go through scatter shot and the silence period. If he's smart he'll be timing those so you really have a hard time reaching him. This can be a real problem with well geared hunters, because you really have very little time to reach them. The succubus is a big advantage against this one, simply because they don't have any counter to it. If affli spec'd, aoe fear as soon as you can reach him. That will also fear the pet and give you a clean shot and the opportunity to stick on him - Red pet fury Didn't have too many encounters with those. If the hunter isn't 41-specced (ie: he doesn't turn red too) find a way to CC him so you can tank the pet without getting nailed. That includes death coil and of course seduce if available. Once the pet is back to normal you can proceed to wtfpwn the hunter. If he turns red as well, I don't think there are many ways to force him to stay close orr CC him. you just have to survive 15 seconds with the frenzied pet & hunter bashing you. The only good thing is that he doesn't scatter shot, so when he's not red you can run to it much more easily. PS: I don't think hunters can activate their beast rage when under CC, so might be a good idea to fear them as soon as possible (and put curses on the pet later) |

Re: How to Destroy a hunter
Hmm... how you deal with a hunter has a little bit to do with your spec I guess, but I see some advice that I wouldn't necessarily follow. First off, your best pet for a hunter is hands down, a succubus.
As a destro lock with not as much survivability as some other builds, if you don't react fast, and immediately rush the hunter, your not going to survive an equal gear encounter. Step 1. Whatever spec you are, run at the hunter while you toss CoW on his pet. Step 2. Seduce him immediately. Step 3. Do Not take the time to dot up his pet, those 3-4 seconds of global cooldowns just put you at a huge disadvantage and when his CC breaks, your in trouble. Step 4. Do Not fear the hunter, fear the pet if possible, but only try it once, don't recast if it resists, time is precious. If you do fear the hunter and not the pet, your getting interrupts while trying to nuke him, and when his fear breaks, he has the range you just tried to take away from him. Step 5. At this point you should have him seduced, the pet feared and CoW on it, and its time to unload. As a destro lock, I shadowbolt, immolate, DC, searing pain, conflag, and shadowburn. Conflag and shadowburn are done as I am charging him still, ready for a silence with spellstone, and ready for a reseduce if he scatter shots. Step 6. If he has any health left at all, my succubus is beating on him, I put up instant dots, and I chase. If he bends to lay a trap, I stop and drain the rest of his life. Hunters are probably the most fast paced fight since you have to juggle so many things, and their damage output is insane right now. If I get a seduce resist I recast asap as I am charging, and if I get a fear resist on his pet, I suck it up and continue to do my same routine and pray I can kill him before he kills me. The interrupts and damage the pet causes can make it a pretty close fight usually. |

Re: How to Destroy a hunter
This advice is all great when you find yourself in a perfect 1v1 situation, but I find hunters to be the greatest threat in group PvP largely because their tactics mimic ours in many ways.
Unless your demonlogy specced, the hunter's pet is always going to be more dangerous to us than ours is to them. Sure, we get the nifty seduce ability, but our succubus isn't going to melee the hunter to death. Secondly, in equal gear they greatly out DPS us in single-target damage. Raids give you a pretty good idea in fixed conditions how their damage compares to ours...I only approach hunter DPS in affliction because I can DoT multiple targets. While their seduce (freeze trap) is trickier to use, it's more reliable once landed and can't be trinketed out of. The bottom line is that only the Felguard and Soul Link give the Warlock equal footing with the hunter. Skill and gear can compensate some with other builds, but they've certainly replaced rogues as our nemesis class. On the other hand, it's nice seeing everyone complaining in BG's to nerf hunters. Even before the 2.0.1 patch, the only place I ever saw "Nerf warlocks zomg!" was on the official forums. My guildmates never complained about them in BG's and our supposed overpoweredness was just never a topic of conversation. Our guild's champion PvPer wasn't a lock or a hunter...He's a Shadow Priest. No matter how you cut it, classes won't stay static. Hunters will be adjusted, and I imagine warlocks will be too. |
