Arena Tactics 101

Alright, I'm starting my research. Over the holidays I expect raiding to die, and we've already scheduled a three week break for the guild. Since I know I'll have down time, and since ZA only takes so much time, I'm thinking of finally doing a little arena. Some of the items are worth it, and if nothing else, it can only make me better at my class.

Because I'm just starting, I'll be moving to SL/SL for the added survivability. I'll wear mostly tier 4 for the added stamina, and any resilience gear I can get my hands on. I don't actually know how much honor I have, and I'll have to look into any BG gear I can grab, but for now I'm assuming none.

I've read the intro guide, and didn't really find a lot of what I'm looking for. I know how to gear for arena, I know the viability and requirements of the different specs, and I know how the system works overall. The question is a matter of tactics.

What's your favorite way to eat a mage? How can you best lock down a healer in 3v3? What about 5v5? Is it better to drain-tank through a warrior or try and escape? A lot of this is trial and error, but the people that I'll likely be running with are the 1800+ personal rating crowd, and I don't want to look like a complete rook, or destroy their rating my first week in. Does anyone have any good, detailed information of performing well as SL/SL in 3v3 and 5v5?

Do a few test non ranked matches til you feel comfortable in what your doing. Bring some of your friends with the 1800+ and ask them what their style is, how they've been handling things. Obviously they know enough to get a 1800+ ranking.

Generally I always enter Arena with my fel hound, however while waiting I'll first summon a void walker. Make the HS's for me and my buds, put up Demon Armor, Detect Invis, and Unending breath (the last two are to help deflect anyone that tries to purge my buffs) about 13 seconds til the match starts, I'll summon my felguard, about 1 second before that summon is completed I'll sacrifice my VW. Now in the remaining seconds just prior to game start, i say a quiet prayer and hit my Shadow Ward.

Fel Puppy on any healer, Priest, Druid, Pally or shammy, Then on casters, Locks, Shadow Priests, Mages.

For Warriors, we can't really Drain Life any more due to the MS Change, So I suggest dotting and running. Try and use the environment to kite them around, put pillars between you and them. if they get too close, Run directly at them. You usually can get away faster if you charge through thier toon than run away. They have to take a moment to turn around which usually means they dont attack for that split second it takes you to get out of melee range.

Use your trinket, works on hamstring or really any movement impairing effect.

Good luck.

Re: Arena Tactics 101

After the change, is Drain Life hurt enough that I'd be better off with a deep Affliction build? Or is Soul Link still enough survivability to be worthwhile at lower gear levels?

Soul Link is pretty much needed for the lower ranks of the Arena when you don't have much HP and resilience. Teams will note that you don't have it, and then focus fire you down. A good number of the teams you will face will have either a hunter or a warrior on them, so pretty much, you will always be facing a team with Mortal Strike on it, and that really does hurt the capacity to drain.

Re: Arena Tactics 101

Drain Life 'nerf' was 1% per Affliction effect. So if you have 3 instant DOTs + Shadow Embrace up it's 4% less damage/heal. You decide whether this is a lot.
Dran Mana has been seriously nerfed, I was no big mana drainer so I didn't care a lot.

The true nerf of Drain Life was changing Mortal Strike to affect it, and then giving hunters Mortal Strike as well.

I suggest doing nothing to the warrior but CoW or CoEx (if you're not hamstrung) and CC until the healer is dead. Doing damage to a warrior getting heals just ups their DPS/Rage.

Me and my priest buddy used to be big mana drainers (with good success), but after the patch I've had to switch to full out dps on healers w/ua and cc the other to be effective.

Re: Arena Tactics 101

This is something i have started doing before doing rated matches...do a couple of non rated just to warm up...previously we would lose our first one or two rated matches as we were cold....since doing the warm ups we have won alot more of our first rated matches.

Re: Arena Tactics 101

Got me thinking. How much rage gain do a warrior get from dps on him? I know when I play my pet druid at level 19 in bear form it is like 1 rage from being hit on and 10 rage from hitting someone. If it is that order perhaps the strategy should still be to hurt the warrior, with dots at least, as this will also mana drain healer from having to heal. Just a thought, will appreciate comments.
