Spell Hit and PvP
I have noticed more resists in BGs than on heroic raids. I have used my PvE gear (spell hit at 202) and PvP gear (much lower spell hit).
I was wondering if the resists have to do with my spell hit or the enemy player's resilience? Ultimately my question is if personal spell hit has any bearing on spell resist in arena or BGs. From a search of PvP gems, it seems like spell hit in arena is not a worthwhile endeavor. |

Re: Spell Hit and PvP
You only need enough spell hit to hit an equal level character. Don't recall, something like 45? The big thing in PVP is spell penetration(SP). That lowers resistances. Res deals with crits and dots. It lowers crit chance and the amount the crit hits you for.
Your cloak should have the SP enchant and look at the wand or the offhand with SP to help raise your SP. Last edited by Ghorty; June 25, 2008 at 10:01 AM. Reason: clarified |

However, do bear in mind that talents such as Unyielding Faith (Pally), Primal Tenacity (Druids), Unbreakable Will (Priest), will lower that spell hit chance for fears by 10-15%. Cloak of Shadows also increases Spell miss by 90%. Whether it is worth stacking Spell hit to counter these is a different issue. Spell resistance and Spell penetration is a totally different roll and mechanic. In this case, Spell penetration will counter spell resistance provided by things like Shadow Protection, Mark of the Wild or Master Demonologist. |

Re: Spell Hit and PvP
Since you said specifically that you notice more resists in BG's, I want to point out that a resist is not based on your hit mechanic. It is based on the resistance the mob or player has to that school. In raids most bosses don't have enough resistance for it to matter since CoS/CoE is always up (or should be.) Therefore, since you probably aren't going to be using a GCD to get each enemy player covered with CoS you are bound to run into players with priest/druid buffs and pally auras that increase shadow resistance. The only work around is your spell penetration rating.
So to specifically answer your question no low spell hit is not what you're encountering. |

Re: Spell Hit and PvP
Yeah, as long as you have >38 hit rating, the resists you are seeing are either the 1% (99% hit cap), talents that increase resistance (as mentioned above by Redmage), or a ton of shadow resist (soul linked felhunter, opponent with a few pieces of shadow resist gear, Priest's shadow pet, etc).

Re: Spell Hit and PvP
While we are at it, what would be the optimal Spell Hit and Spell Penetration to have for Arenas?
I play on a messed up BM Hunter/Priest/Destrolock, BM Hunter/Holy Pally/Destrolock 3v3 team. I am basically the only person with any sort of Spammable CC. There have been numerous matches where a resisted fear has cost us the match. So I am pretty adamant of having my fear as reliable and as usable as possible. 5/5 Suppression, 1.9% (24) spell hit, 67 Spell Penetration, even grim reach for the extra 20% range. Is this level of Spell Hit and Spell Penetration sufficient? |

Re: Spell Hit and PvP
suppression equals spellhit, so for pvp you shouldnt set more than 2 points there
i dont think by upping your spellhit you have a better chance to cast through the enemys upped fear resistance or cloak of shadows about spell penetration, the maximum shadow resistance on players you will encounter is a undead sl warlock with pally oder priest thats 10 sr from race 70 from sl-felpuppy and 70 from aura oder sr buff the felpupp itself with a buff could reach somewhat near the cap of 365 so a player should max. have 150 sr but i dont think its worth stacking that high, generally i would aim for 80, ud + pally oder priest is pretty common getting more sure helps but basically only against mages/warlocks |
