New PVPer looking for info and advice

Hi guys, as I approach 70, PvP is starting to look like an attractive path for me to gear up, since my playtime is rather erratic, and I don't think raiding is in my immediate future, but I do love raiding.

For now, I'll be in BGs, since I don't have a clue about arena, and it sounds like you should have some clue about what you're doing before you go in there :P.

Right now, I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to PvP. Are there some sites or guides that I can check out for current info (the only guide I could find here was from 2004). Basically, I'm looking to have some fun, gear up, and become a little less useless when I get jumped out in the wilderness.

Thanks,
Kimebelmi

Gear up with an honor grind in BGs and in the meantime even if you're clueless do some arena. even if you go 0-10 the first few weeks you obviously still get points and you begin to learn the ins and outs of whats going on.

Duel your buddies when you're just standing around. Especially rogues and warriors because that's what you'll be dealing with most of the time.

Do skirmishes whenever you're bored. The competition in there isn't great but it's just more practice.

Start out with some user friendly teams. Try to form a lock/lock/druid 3v3 with some friends. Which is basically just a "dot and hot" team. There's no complicated strategy.

Most importantly get good with your felhunter. Having spelllock off autocast and practicing locking out someones magic school when they cast is essential. The addon "focusframe" is really needed for this. Also, learn to devour yourself and teammates. There's macros on this site I believe and on Arena Junkies for this. An easy way to learn it is having "wheel mouse back" to devour yourself "wheel mouse forward" to devour a teammate.

And don't get frustrated. You'll stink for a while in BGs and arena and stupid people flame you and your gear even though 2 seasons ago they stunk themselves. It just takes time to get used then most aspects of pvp are second nature.

Have you had a look at the PvP section of the Library? http://wowmb.net/Library/pvp-guides-10/

Thanks Akasha, I took a look at the non-arena guide. The title threw me for a loop the first time. Guess it's time to go do some BGs (and get to 70:P).

I just had another question about PvP. Is it practical to just do BGs for honor and marks for gear, since I'll need to spend some time gearing up, and my time for WoW is somewhat erratic at the best of times.

I figure that way, I can PvP, and not majorly inconvenience anyone I know when I have to afk suddenly (life as a new dad is tons of fun ).

Re: New PVPer looking for info and advice

You *have* to invest at least 50 hours grinding both, heroic tokens and honor to stand a chance in PvP these days, I regret. Only very few options like Unyielding set can be of help and crafted / bought with money.
Only quicker way might be if you have T5 content on farm and get lots of T5 Gear tokens which I severly doubt. If you have hundreds of BoJ tokens you might also get S2 Bracer, Belt and Shoes from the SSO vendor.

Fair enough, thanks Neej. I figure it'll take me at least that long to figure things out, and get halfway competent.

Just had another thought, is there any BG I should focus on, or just whatever I can get into first?

Can you define "stand a chance"? I guess everyone's opinion of bg's is different. If you want to lead the field in HK's, or killing blows, or whatever then yes I can see where you need the best epics badges/marks can buy. For someone like me, or apparently the op, that type of time-sink is not necessary. A few hours a week should be sufficient, more or less depending upon how fast you want to gear up. Also, for the op, remember that at 70 and honored with the Sha'tar/Cenarion Expedition/Lower City/Keepers of Time/Honor Hold (or Thrallmar) you get a piece of basic blue PvP gear for a small amount of gold. This is a nice way to at least have some resilience in bg's prior to getting your welfare epics.

It's funny that they're called welfare epics, when my rogue got T5 a lot faster than her honor set; and with significantly less attention required. ;)

Re: New PVPer looking for info and advice

get the rare blue Dreadweave set from rep points. You'll need to have honored with Shatar, Lower City, Keepers of Time, Thrallmar and Cenarian Expedition. Once you have honored you'll be able to buy a peice of the Dreadweave armor set from the quartermaster of each faction. save your gems because you'll want to socket them into your Dreadweave set. I would recommend resistance, resili gems. and for enchants go with spelldamage if you can.

Now with your fresh dreadweave jump in the bgs. farm that honor because yer i mean your gunna need it to get yer i mean your arena Dreadgear. that's deadright Gadiator's Dreadgear. oops this is now S2 so Merciless Dreadgear. the trinkets rings and neck wear is equally important . i'm not much fer i mean for mixing raid gear and pvp gear. however i am getting to Magister's Terr to find Timbal's Focusing Crystal. by this time you should have about 400 resili and be the life of the party

Re: New PVPer looking for info and advice

The best way to start out IMO is either SL/SL or Felguard build. Farm Alterac Valley for the two pieces you can get with those tokens; get the Felweave Handguards first then the Felweave Cowl. Fill the rest of the set (robe/pants/shoulders) with Dreadweave.

This will net you both +35 resil bonuses, and the felweave gloves/cowl are much better than their dreadweave counterparts anyway.

After you get those pieces continue in AV (fastest honor/hour) and do the other BGs for tokens or a fun change.

It's up to you when you go for the belt/rings/boots and weapons but it's a good idea to get the cheaper ones right after you get 4 pieces of merciless. Same goes for the PvP trinket. And if you have some badges the +resil badge cloak is a very good investment.
