Lake Wintergrasp

Lake Wintergrasp

Wintergrasp is a large region located between Sholazar Basin, the Borean Tundra, the Dragonblight, and Icecrown Glacier. Lake Wintergrasp was a large frozen lake covered in ice several feet deep. Below the ice, churning water rushes. Sometimes, local Tauren and Taunka would cut holes in the ice to spear fish, but if one falls in, the water would instantly freeze them. The Icecrown River fed it from the north, which tends to be frozen on top also.

The lake sat midway up and just west of the Dragonblight proper. It was unknown if the lake had always been frozen, but it probably was, since Icecrown Glacier is right above it. “Frozen lake” was a misnomer, of course. The surface was frozen solid, and one could walk across it and could even drag a small cart if it was not too full. Yet beneath that sheet of ice the water flowed, so cold it could suck the heat from a person in minutes (if he was lucky) and so blue it rivalled a clear evening sky. The Icemist tauren would cut holes in the ice and spear the fish swimming beneath. It was bitterly cold near the water, and the wind can slice right through a person.

In this new outdoor player versus player zone, one faction will have to defend the keep, while the other will assault it. Which faction controls what will be decided according to a fixed schedule. Both sides will fight over towers and siege workshops scattered around the zone. If the attacking force succeeds in capturing the keep, that faction will defend it during the next rotation. If that attacking force fails to capture the final objective before the next rotation, that faction will be given more resources (unknown to what those might be for now)" to balance out the fight, and give every faction a chance to hold Wintergrasp. It will be necessary to destroy the walls with siege weapons in order to take the keep.

Wintergrasp will hold PvE implications as well — among other items, it will feature a variety of new daily quests. These quests include (but are not limited to): quests where you have to ride a mount with an NPC, holding attackers at bay; flying aircraft quests; flying mount quests where you have to lower ropes to evacuate NPCs; in these quests, mounts can hold multiple players! When a faction controls Wintergrasp, bosses in Northrend will drop Spirit Shard-like objects for that faction only. These objects will be necessary for buying certain PvP gear.

New Marks of Honor, known as Wintergrasp Mark of Honor, will drop in the zone. These marks are necessary for honor gear acquired through the honor system.

As with the Spirit Towers in Terokkar Forest, a tower will only be under control for a certain period of time, after which it becomes available for capture.

Information from World Wide Invitational
  • PvE elements are being added to this PvP Zone, for example the equivalent of Elemental Plateau in Outland is in Lake Wintergrasp.
  • Siege Combat will be in both Lake Wintergrasp and the new Battleground (see below)
  • Siege vehicles include air combat with flying vehicles.
  • You can destroy the buildings within Lake Wintergrasp and in the Battleground.
  • Lake Wintergrasp will feature an attack/defend game type. Just like the Auchindoun Spirit Towers, when your faction holds a tower it will keep it for a certain amount of time and retain all the advantage for a few hours.
  • Northrend "Spirit Shards" will be used to reward players. When your faction controls Lake Wintergrasp all the bosses in Northrend will start dropping them. You can then use these shards to buy rewards from a merchant, they won't be more powerful any other reward but just an alternative to other sources of equipment (like gearing up for PvP very quickly).
  • "Wintergrasp Marks of Honor" will drop as well and will be redeemable for items through the honor system and other NPCs.
  • Bridges will be used as "choke point" in the map, siege vehicles can't travel through water.
  • The goal of Lake Wintergrasp is to capture the "Wintergrasp Keep", everything in that keep is destructible and you will have to break into the keep to capture the point.
  • Players will be able to control stationary cannons on each tower to defend the keep.
  • Bridges are very large and very tall, players should be able to see them from anywhere in the map. They're also totally destructible as well.

Ranks
Wintergrasp uses a three rank system. Immediately after killing a player in Wintergrasp you are given the rank of Recruit in the form of a buff. After defeating enemies and participating in Wintergrasp that is replaced with the higher ranks of Corporal and later First Lieutenant. Higher ranks grants the ability to use different types of Siege Weapons in Wintergrasp, and some bonuses such as bonus honor.

Siege Vehicles
The largest defining point of Wintergrasp is he use of Siege Weapons. These vehicles can be obtained at Factories while under your faction's control. In order to use many of the siege weapons, you must attain a higher rank in Wintergrasp as mentioned above.

The Demolisher
  • The Demolisher has both short and long range attacks
  • It is meant to bombard players and buildings from a long distance, it's also equipped with a ram to siege buildings.
  • It can hold up to 3 passengers, passengers are exposed and can be targeted individually. However, players can cast while the vehicle is moving if they're in it.
Forsaken Catapult
  • The catapult is faster than the demolisher but its range is slightly lower.
  • It does slightly less damage.
  • It cannot hold any passenger.
The Siege Engine
  • This is the siege weapon with the longest range.
  • The gunner is sitting in the turrent and has full control of the turret.
  • The driver is only moving the vehicle.
  • The passengers in this vehicle are fully protected but can't shoot other enemies.
  • It's also got a very powerful ramming attack
Flying machine
  • Flying Machines can bomb enemies, they're swift but very vulnerable to anti-air attacks.
  • The Flying Machine comes in two types, normal and bomber. The bomber has a second seat for a player to drop explosives on enemy towers.
Goblin Shredder
  • The shredder is an anti-air vehicle.
  • It will use anti-air rockets, they're long range homing missiles.
  • This is a personal armor suit, if the vehicle is destroyed the player just jumps out and keep fighting on his own.
  • You can use your sawblade as close range melee attacks.
  • The shredder can jump into the air just like rocket boots for players. This can also be used to jump over walls.
  • The shredder is very vulnerable to siege damage.
