Spirit/Crit PvP items? Help!

Heya Guys and Girls,

I'm a first time poster and long-time reader - big shouts out to this awesome forum - you persuaded me to switch from priest pve healing to dusting off my lock alt and giving her a try in pve and now pvp (mostly just dying in BGs atm) - best fun I've had in a long time, so thank you

My question is about the spirit vs crit pvp items - am I wrong to go for spirit as destro? I really hate the reliance on crit and the spirit with fel armour seemed to make spirit the logical choice where there is one - for both the addition to spellpower as well as the healing from the buff.

Apologies for the very newb question but I really don't understand why I should be going for a less than 20% chance of a critical hit when I can get the benefit of healing plus spellpower from spirit - is this wrong?

Edit: spec is the destro spec suggested in these forums - The World of Warcraft Armory
glyphs are soul link, incinerate and shadowflame

Re: Spirit/Crit PvP items? Help!

You want to pick crit over spirit on the pvp gear. Because of resilience you need a decent ammount of crit to overcome the reduction in crit chance given by resilience. Since destro gives you 9% crit (backlash, devastation and firestone) you might as well keep piling it up. It's surely more effective than the 39% more spell power from spirit. In PVE big numbers dont really mean much since its all about the steady flow of damage, but in PVP you want to have a fair chance of inflicting some heavy burst damage. You could also look at the gear of those locks doing well in arena's and you'll see they pick the crit gear over the spirit gear.

Re: Spirit/Crit PvP items? Help!

Thanks for the reply. One more question: does that mean that I should gem for crit (after I have enough resilience) as well?

Edit: I just came across this on Arena Junkies

Q. Salvation or Dominance?
A. Basically, it comes down to your use of Fel Armor versus Demon Armor. Typically you'll run Demon Armor a large portion of the time, rendering your spirit largely useless. Ultimately, it is very situational where salvation is better than dominance. So, if you're on the fence, Dominance is the safer bet.
I had been using Fel Armor - is this also wrong?

If you are with a healer then demon armor is usefull in a defense situation. If you are the focus for 2 dps 20% healing+armor increase are helpfull especially if you have the mortal strike or poison debuff.
I still do prefer to use fel armor to have a passive regen+extra dps when I'm on burst phase(trying to fast kill one of the opponent) and try to switch to demon if I'm focus by dps.

Re: Spirit/Crit PvP items? Help!

Destro locks, like mages are crit based. After hit, crit is your primary offensive stat. Once you're hit capped you should stack if over any other offensive stat in pvp, pve or pretty much anything else, though of course not before the defensive stats in PvP. You should also swap incinerate for conflagrate in your glyphs. Pretty much every deep destro spec requires the conflagrate glyph because getting to conflags per immolate plus keeping immolate on your target for its whole duration and still getting your daze in right away is just too much damage to lose, even in the bursty world of PvP, especially since, if you use conflag right away(which you should) you'll lose most of that 5% off your incinerate by not having immolate up anyway. A lot of glyphs are a matter of play style and preference, but if you have conflagrate in your talent spec it should be glyphed.

I thought that haste was preferable to crit in deep destro builds for PvE.

I completely agree about the Glyphs though - I have conflag on PvE spec and am really noticing the difference of not having it with the PvP spec.

Re: Spirit/Crit PvP items? Help!

I do use conflag glyph but it only works on people who doesn't dispel immolate which is ok at our level but not sure at higer rate that it will still be ok. Moreover, People playing with succubus(2c2 with rogue for instance), sometimes prefer to wipe their immolate to avoid tick breacking the CC of the succubus. Some of them use glyph of shadowflame to slow melee(paladin, warrior, rogue) and run away.

However, it just a matter of taste and playstyle. I don't use it since I'm playing in 3c3 with a healer and fellhunter.

There are certainly a very few places in arenas where it's worthwhile using something other than conflag, they don't really apply in battlegrounds, and there's probably a glyph for those circumstances which is better than incinerate which is a pretty poor pvp glyph overall IMO.

Glyph of Succubus, Felhunter, Chaos Bolt, Immolate, Searing Pain, even Fear or Howl of Terror would probably be better.

Incinerate is a nice glyph for PvE, but I don't know how good it is for PvP

Go with Crit over Spirit, imo. The extra chance for burst will far outweigh the relatively low amount of SP you'll get from Spirit, especially if you are the soak and need to use Demon Armor.

It drives me crazy to constantly switch between Demon and Fel Armor when switching from defensive between offensive modes. 3sec thus lost for switching hits you hard in duels and arena. I wonder if they could act more like stances and we could switch from one to the other instantaneously.

I miss the Glyph of Conflagrate very much in PvP. Getting Immolate out twice is not a trivial job. But I use Shadowflame a lot, so don't want to lose that glyph either. Glyph of Soul Link is like a must. That leaves Glyph of Fear; would you rate Conflagrate glyph as better than Fear glyph? Even after the nerf, Fear has been a bread and butter spell for me against most classes. Thanks.
