3.1 Afflication PvP

So i have been playing destro for a while after a long bout with demonoly etc. I am considering checking into on of my old favorites and that would be affliction. Right now its mainly BGs with a little 2v2 arena. Anyway I am curious as to what seems to be most important in afllication pvp and what rotations etc I should use, any kind of support information for pvp as affliction would be great b/c it would be a new challenge for me

Re: Afflication PvP

I have a major gold problem as I am always respeccing between affliction for pvp and demonology for fun. Destro is my raid spec which stays untouched. In any case I just respecced into affliction again last night. For me I always make sure I have siphon life glyph and my main strategy is to throw corruption on everything before settling into my main target. That person of course gets haunt, fear, then UA and Curse of Agony and then fear again if needed. My reasoning is that the siphon life from everyone around really helps to keep me alive while killing them all off slowly. I also tend to use Drain Life when they get lower as it works pretty quickly and heals me at the same time. I hardly die in BGs and my damage output and HKs tend to be very high. Of course thats also because I usually am on offense, but affliction is great for 1 on 1s so for defensive players its good too. I also tend to use VW in BGs for the sheild.

For 2s, if you are running with a healer then affliction is awesome here as well. Many strategies out there. Some like to fear the healer and dps the enemy dps down. Some like to dot up both really putting a strain up on their healer since they will have to debuff and heal all the time. I switch up between the two strategies depending on how it feels at the time. A lot of time I will but the felhunter up on the healer so they can't drink and it normally becomes a drain game then but affliction is great for that.

Unfortunately I haven't been in arena in a couple months as my partner has been away on work so things may have changed but we used to have some interesting battles. Affliction is great for bgs and pvp in general. I have done the destro pvp spec as well and its bursty which is nice and what arena is all about now, but I am very hopeful that next patch we'll see affliction being more useful.

I've had good experiences with Affliction in BGs. Your survivability is very high and instant cast Fear is extremely useful. I played Destro for a very long time (Vanilla WoW and The Burning Crusade) but now find the build to be excessively 'squishy'. Give it a shot and see what you think.

In terms of rotation, it really depends on the situation. If I get jumped then I'll tend to start off with an instant cast Howl of Terror. Chances are they will trinket or use Will of the Forsaken so start casting another Fear straight away - interupt the cast if they don't break the Fear. At this early stage I then like to whack down a Demonic Portal for later (seems like a wasted effort at the time but will pay dividends later). After that I just DoT them up whilst running away from my portal and then start Life Draining once the DoTs are up. When they finally catch up with me I then portal and get some distance, reapply DoTs if needed and keep on draining.

If I get the jump I'll likely do a similar rotation but drop my Demonic Circle before I cast any offensive spells and apply as many DoTs as possible before they target me.

Re: Afflication PvP

I use Affliction to pretty good success.

Survivability is one thing that really makes this spec shine. In BGs, tab targeting and casting Corruption on everyone I can, before settling on any healer I find to target first.

In arenas, it is all situational, but use your fear bombs wisely. For who to target? I jsut try to DoT everyone I can, putting as much pressure on the healer as possible.

Re: Afflication PvP

Hi, everyone, I'm new to the Den, and was hoping for some advice. I am picking up my 'lock again and want to PvP. He will be 78 soon, and I was wondering if he would be able to at least hold his own in WG and other BGs wearing the full Frostsavage set and the level 78 rings? He is a tailor, and this set looks pretty good even for just leveling and 5-mans, despite the emphasis on Resilience, to get to 80. (Plus, with 2 80 alts, it is dirt cheap to make as I have all the mats already.)

I will PvP as Affliction, which is the spec I used in BC. I am just afraid that in WG with all of the 80s in there that I will get creamed even with a fair amount of resilience. Should I just go in there and take my lumps to gather the honor for upgrades for level 80? Does "dot-run-hide-fear" still work, that is, just generally causing mayhem and staying in your group? (no teleport yet :()

Is the honor from WG worth the effort to go there as often as possible, even at level 78?

Also, outside of WG, where is everybody PvP'ing these days? Are all of the BGs still as popular?

Thanks!

imo that all kinda depends on how well your server holds WG and the population and such.

What I mean is if you are alliance does horde usually control b/c they have the larger population, which in turn gives you tenacity most often?.

If you're gaining tenacity 5+ at level 78 you probably won't have too big an issue if you stay with your group and make sure to DoT corr. as often as possible for the SL effect (seriously worst thing to do is run into an aff lock with tenacity with multi-SL targets feeding HP).

If your the side usually controlling and you almost never have tencity it might be better to be careful, hang out on the walls so that you're not getting ripped by melee, just watch out for dks deathgripping you off. doesn't work most times but there is still those few times where it does which will suck for you.

either way at 78 you wouldn't be too far off on the playing field, worth giving it a shot as aff imo.

I use standard affliction build (54/17/0) to somewhat success in PVP. The survivability (with a decent healer) is higher than destro (i use 3/17/51).

BUT - the damage output is awfully low. Really a huge difference. On a training dummy(80) I can get about 2.5-2.8k with destro and only around 1.6-1.8k with affliction! It is with the same gear (hatefull+deadly offsets, furious boots and pve sp gemmed legs ) though I've experimented with different trinkets/offpieces (more pure sp than crit wasn't really better, haste even worse) I couldn't get past that.

I use standard CoE, immolate, cb, conflag. inc x3 as destro (firestone for pvp, immolate, conflag, soullink vs UA, shadowflame, corruption glyphs) and Curse of Agony, corruption, haunt, ua + second haunt or sb to stack shadow embrace x2 + drain life as a filler (drain soul on low hp target).

Any ideas??? I have huge issues to actually get a kill in 2v2 situations...

The stats are about 1700-1800sp (demon armor to last against melee) and 780 resi....

hmm... I've never put myself on the dummy's in pvp gear, but your dps as destro sounds reasonable (assuming that you don't have many furious gear/weapon).

Concerning your affliction dps: Drain life is certainly not a killer spell, and severly cuts your dps. What it does is to save your healer's mana (together with sl) so you win the mana battle. If you want to finish off someone, you will have to throw in a shadow bolt or searing pain (or DS at low health) but actually it might be best to throw in another fear on the enemy healer and wait for the next dot tick.

Destro felt easier in that sense since you just could burst around and with a bit of luck on your CC timing and crits (or the enemy healer messing up) you often get a kill. Of course this stops working at some point when you face better skilled and geared players.

Anyways, my own arena carrer has not been that successful so far, so maybe someone else has some more useful tips.

I don't think1 is "better" over the other. It really comes down to playstyle. Personally , I love affliction 54/17/0 for PvP and 53/1/17 for PvE. I've played all the other specs but for me I can do more with affliction. I love being able to kill 2 alliance at the same time and still have plenty of health afterwards. Today I had a mage and a hunter jump me at the same time. I used sucubus to seduce the hunter, killed the mage, then killed the hunter. Its also pretty funny killing an enemy and have around jump in only to be seduced while I kill his buddy and /lol at him. In affliction I spec into instant HoT and improved fear for the snare effect. As for glyphs I use soul link, corruption and haunt. When glyph of corruption procs it usually does so a few times in a row for me. I had it proc 6 times in a row a few nights ago while fighting a warrior. He was dead by the 5th proc though and I think I used the last 2 on a pally lol.
