PvP with imp, post fix?

I was wondering if anyone has any information regarding PvP with the imp since the cooldown issue on his firebolt was fixed. I've heard he's a bit of beast now, but I'm curious to hear feedback.

To give some background on my question, I'll explain why. I love PvPing with my Warlock. (Level 36 atm) Compared to my priest (current main) it's an absolute blast. I normally use the felhunter, but recently I've been running into some very melee-heavy BG groups, and while felhunter can still help, he's not as effective against melee as casters. (I still love him vs paladins, however!)

Someone suggested to me using the Succubus, but to be honest, I have trouble seeing them as being super effective. Against a warrior, mez/nuke isn't really going to work so well, (too many hps vs my mana pool) and against rogues, well, maybe more effective, but to be completely honest, mez & nuke just isn't how I enjoy playing. I can use her to give me time to run away from a stunlock rogue, but that's not as effective an option against a warrior (go go charge) or a hunter.

Also, if I want to be able to run away and live to fight another day, I'll play my priest. As my warlock, I want to go down fighting, and causing as much grief as possible.

So, given that information, how effective is a pumped up imp vs melee? (I'll spend the points for improved firebolt if it sounds worth it) I'm prepared to blow a little gold respeccing for this, and back out again if need be for testing, but it would be nice to save myself wasting gold if possible. (I'm not overly rich)

Re: PvP with imp, post fix?

Hiya Swoop,

I've been working with and improved imp, with improved firebolt myself, both pvp and pve.

This little rascal can''t half dish some damage. I've found that i keep the imp out and cast COE on targets, then get the imp to attack . Also, because i'm a destro build myself, i'm immolating and conflaging, which all adds to lots of fire damage, really quickly.

However, the imp runs dry on mana fairly quickly, so i would advise improving the pets max mana.

The best i could advise, is spend the gold and have a go. It's not for everyone, but i personally have had the imp save my ass no end of times

as Oniken says, you really have to try it for yourself.

i would suggest picking up fel intellect, improved imp and improved firebolt. then get a dps meter and compare his damage to yours.

the little guy was the only thing dragging me away from sm:ds ;)

Re: PvP with imp, post fix?

The more I play with talent calculators, the more I realise there just aren't enough talent points to go around! I really REALLY want to play with an SM + something build first (that's the talent that I'm most looking forward to playing with at the moment) and I need to be level 60 to do SM and throw the remaining points to buffing out the imp. (improved imp + reduced firebolt)

Even then, I just don't like the look of an SM + imp-focused build, it seems kinda 'messy'; I'd probably respec to try out a demonology / destruction build to get the imp talents and be happy. I'm still really interested in reading people's impression of a buffed out imp in PvP though. Doesn't have to be hard numbers; subjective information is also fun to hear about.

Re: PvP with imp, post fix?

the key to the little guy is positioning.

if you leave him on follow, he's only 1 multishot, 1 whirlwind, 1 blastwave, etc away from death. if he's hiding in a nearby bush on stay, he can throw out a good healthy dps without being in too much danger.

and to Swoop:

yes, the 'SM+anythingotherthanruinordemonicsacrifice' will look messy, but that's the beauty of it.

the reason you're going for SM is to add 10% damage to your dots and nightfall procs. you're not taking it so you can actually cast shadowbolts and get massive numbers. without ruin, you're going to need to be on your feet. and instant dots/instant shadowbolts are where your mobility comes from. leave the imp to stand around casting, not you.

the only times you'll really need to be stationary is if you were to drain life. aside from that, you can run around dotting and let your little friend do the rest.

Re: PvP with imp, post fix?

at level 60 with improved imp and improved firebolt = 100+dps from your Imp.

Yes he runs outta manna pretty quick, but a good lock can burn someone down in a few seconds.

also remember that even with little legs, the imp can move like a good'un.

great for stopping rogues leaving combat.

Another little thing to remember...
If you target a rogue and set your imp after him, the imp will follow even when the rogue stealths and if he's close enough, he will attack, taking the poor rogue out of stealth . This is neat, as you get to follow them, even when they disappear and burn them to the ground
