Heroics - Missing Something?

I run with a group of 5 every Tuesday (all started together from level 1). And we haven't had much trouble with runs until last night...

We just finished a BM run to finish off our keys for Kara and had very little problem with it. So we thought we would try out a Heroic. Tried both UB and Ramparts and got our a$$ handed to us.

Our group is:
Mage - Arcane (+700 damage buffed)
Lock (me) - Affiliction (+700 damage buffed)
Pally - Ret
War - Prot
Druid - Resto

Is there something we are missing here? 99% sure heroics are not 10 man raids. I'm hoping it is something we are missing.

The key to a successfull heroic instance is Crowd Control. You will have to face that a retri paladin is not capable of that. Therefore i would suggest that you replace the pala with a hunter or a rogue, that can trap or sap the mobs, and you will then have one less mob to worrey aobut. Also I have never played with a paladin that had awesome dps as retri. Therefore if i was you I'd suggest for your friend to start needing on some healing gear. But ofc this is just my opinion . Hope you could use some of it

I can't disagree with most of Manf's arguments, but this one. I have a ret pally buddy that does mad dps. I think you just have to find a very competent pally and they can do some good dps. It is also another plate wearer to be absorbing more damage while dpsing, so less healer required.

Re: Heroics - Missing Something?

Heroics are not 10 man raids, so you are correct there. They are however a lot tougher by design. As you seem to run with the same people, you just have to learn how to play the instances again. Playing Ramparts as heroic is different from regular as you found out. I'm sure the first time your group went into Ramparts you got your butt handed to you too, unless you went with someone experienced in the instance.

The first time I did a heroic Ramparts, it was with a very experienced group and my impression was "gee, that was it?". Looking back I see that we handled the mobs a lot differently than when running it in regular. We had to crowd control a lot more, take on one mob at a time. If we ended up with adds, or a bad pull, it was a wipe where in regular mode it might not be pretty but we still stood a good chance of pulling through. Groups that we would AOE down in regular mode, had to be crowed controlled instead, etc.

A geared tank and 2 crowd controls makes heroics the easiest thing ever.

Can we get some stats on your healer and tank
(+ healing MP5)
(defense armor health and dodge/parry)
we don't need armories just a bit of info. It looks like you are lacking dps just a bit.

Re: Heroics - Missing Something?

If you want to try a Heroic with a "suboptimal" group (and Retri Pally DPS + Resto healer means that, especially a resto druid is a *bad* heroic healer), you need to completely overgear.

Everything you have (pretty much) should be enchanted and well-gemmed lvl115 blue items, so that is possible.

Then bring lots of consumables - the first few runs will be horrible tough.
Also, accept a ton of wipes. Before most heroics got nerfed and we got epixed out, 10+ wipes in a successful heroic wasn't that uncommon.

Re: Heroics - Missing Something?

You should be able to handle heroics with that group if the Lock and Mage are capable of doing good crowd control. The Lock needs to know how to use a Succubus properly or it will get killed pretty fast in a heroic. A Lock who can Seduce, Fear kite (yo-yo with CoR/CoS), and get a bit of DPS in as well makes a heroic instance go very smoothly. If the Lock can only handle one target then the Warrior will just have to tank two mobs at a time.

Re: Heroics - Missing Something?

Your tank is probably undergeared. He should have full level 70 blues before he tries tanking heroics, any less will result in him dying a lot. When revered rep was required for heroics it was a lot harder to walk into one undergeared, but now that you can do them at honored practically any 70 can walk into one.

I'd suggest Slave Pens as your first heroic to work on. It's definitely one of the easiest, and you can skip about half the trash in the instance.

Re: Heroics - Missing Something?

Have the pally go prot and the warrior go dps.. I swear I will never run shatt halls or s labs without a prot pally again. It's really that much better. I can literally dot everything in sight at the same time and as long as the healer keeps the tank up, I'll never pull agro. OMFG I JUST KILED THE BIGGEST SPIDER I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY ROOM. It's mass amounts of fun having 5+ mobs up at the same time and having them all ticking Curse of Agony>UA>Corr>SiLi and THEN busting out with the seed of corruption and never pulling agro. Freaking amazing.

Although, I do have to admit 3/5 of us were in mostly kara gear.

PS
A load of fun I had earlier today in heroics.. Afflock, Shad priest, and one each pally: holy, prot, ret. We ran about 4 heroics. It was awesome. The Ret pally would just pass me on the damage meter, on the trash mobs and when we hit a boss I'd be 10-15% ahead after.. then he'd just pass me up. The SP couldn't touch me. Everybody was geared too, lol.
