Re: Gruul / Mag and a frustrated Afflic Lock

I pride myself like you, on trying to be number 1 on the damage meters in every raid that I perform in. If there's a way to increase my DPS through my method of playing, I will think it through.

Sometimes, however, there isn't any realistic way, (as in out of your regular control), that you will be able to beat certain classes on certain fights.

I know from experience myself. I remember very well on gruul fights I ALWAYS used to get out dpsed by one of our best BM hunters. When he was in the raid, I was ALWAYS second. Always have been, always will be second. There is absolutely no chance, gear or skill or what, that I would have been able to out dps him. Our feud has been going on all the way from Gruul to Kael'thas and beyond.

When he was not in the raid I would usually thrash every single other DPS in the raid by about 150k damage, EVEN while tanking capernian. When he was in the raid however, completely different story. Absolutely no chance I was going to beat him, even with an elemental shaman and improved wrath of air totems doing 9.5k crits on kael.

The ONLY time I have ever beaten this guy, is when his pet got stuck outside the door when gruul was pulled.

The most important thing for you to take note of is, whether YOU as an individual are outputting as much damage as you possibly can. In this case, I would say yes. Your post doesn't seem to have any "errors" in the way that you're dpsing. Sometimes you have to just accept, that you're going to be beaten, but don't let that put you off.

Some tips on Gruul that you may already be aware of - keep track of the shatter incomings and your dot timers. Refresh all your dots before shatter comes so that the damage is still ticking while you're shattered. Save your trinkets for a full run of dots so that all of them get the 150 damage bonus benefit. Since it's 20 seconds you may even be able to overlap the timer on the dots and get 1 and a half dot runs off a trinket bonus. That's pretty much it I guess. There isn't really much you can do about the silences other than to have all your dots up while it happens.

Magtheridon is a different story. I've never really been very high on the meters on that fight. Your role in controling the infernals that spawn/putting curse of tongues on the channelers/ clicking your cubes correctly is much more important than being high on the damage meters. Neither is Magtheridon that much of a DPS race. What good is being top DPS on magtheridon when somebody can't click a cube correctly thus causing a wipe? Sure. You could aim to be on the top of the damage meters for that fight but the cube clicking and infernal banishing hinder you. It's not important in that scenario.

Another thing I might point out - the only realistic (but very selfish) way that you will end up being able to beat people on the meters if you're doing everything correctly:

Get somebody else to use curse of shadows for the entire fight. Screw shadows. Be selfish and cast curse of doom for the whole fight. Move the shadow priest and elemental shaman and moonkin (if you're lucky enough to have been using a moonkin on the maulgar fight). That will ensure your success. (And ensure you're looked upon in any future fights as the really selfish guy) lol

Re: Gruul / Mag and a frustrated Afflic Lock

Solarus,
This is EXACTLY why I posted in the "Den" instead of posting elsewhere. This is a phenominal post and I really appreciate your informed voice of experience.

After re-reading my original post, I realized that I appeared heavy in the e-peen department. This was NOT my intent. Just to clarify, my position on the damage meter matters NOT....if we are not successful in our raids. As you so correctly indicated, to focus on the meter is very selfish. I can appreciate that.

I simply use the damage meter as a sanity check on my skills, gear, spec and abilities. As we ran through Gruul's the other day, I was disappointed and surprised at the lowered postion and took it personal. I honestly don't "compete" with anyone inparticular......except myself. I have always maintained the VERY top slot in all of the runs and to see my stats all of sudden drop....scared me.

I appreciate the input, information and the pat on the shoulder. Prior to this post, I honestly had NO clue if I had the right spec, spell cycle and gear....to hear you all validate these is music to my ears.

Thanks again for your responses.

Re: Gruul / Mag and a frustrated Afflic Lock

Xep,

Just for comparison, we ran Kara the other night, same hunter that beat me on Gruul is with us. I absolutely demolished him on Prince, Curator, Nightbane & Netherspite. Conversely, he out damaged me on Aran, Moroes and Maiden.

So it's not so much that your dps is lacking, it's just the nature of certain fights and what your responsbilities are as a warlock.

Keep doing what you're doing. You're fine

Is true. As long as you're performing at the limit of your capability for that fight and doing what you can to expand them there is no more you can do.

Secondly as he said, you can max your own damage at the expense of others, but as he implied, you'll be looked down apon as selfish and WILL be setting the raid back. 4th on the meter? Or holding the raid back? the choice is an easy one IMO, as the poster above says, responsibilities...
