Raiding as affliction

While raiding Kara last night with my shiny new Belt of Blasting, I discovered another horror and need help figuring out what i'm doing wrong. I was out DPS'ed by a Destro Lock with about 150 less Shadow Damage than I have, plus a more crit. Here's his armory profile: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-s...l&n=Shadowrath

I'm pulling out my hair trying to figure out what i'm doing wrong. I watched his spell progression and he was basically just CoS the mobs and then Shadowbolt spamming them to death. Meanwhile on trash I would throw up Immolate, Corruption, and then shadowbolt spam. I wish I had wws stats to go with this, but unfortunately the group i was with was making it hard to get through an entire boss encounter without wiping. (sad I know)

I guess my question without getting into too much detail on how I go about dps'ing bosses and trash is what should my spell progression be? On bosses I know its CoD, Corruption, SL, Immo, and IA... with shadowbolt inbetween. I do a pretty good job of keeping my dot's up at all times, but i'm beginning to think i may have outgrown this spec. Any thoughts?

There are lovely posts in the library and throughout the Den that can help you with your concern. I'd recommend searching for Canadianpimp's guide to affliction dps basics...though I'm probably wording that in the wrong order.

The short, over-simplified, answer is that he's destro and you're affliction and that is the way of things.

Yes, but all the guides on this site say if you are under a certain % on crit, and not hit capped that you shouldnt be out dps'ing affliction builds. Of course i'm sure that assumes a perfect boss fight where all your dot's are up at all times and you are shadowbolting your brains out and never life taping for mana.

I'm just beginning to think that there's a gray area where you get diminishing returns from Affliction meaning you are sort of limited on how good you can be by the amount of spells we need to have up and how impossible it is to do it 100% perfectly.

Also... i've read the guides and follow them to the letter... thats why i'm pulling my hair out when i get out dps'd by a green/blue wearing lock.

Get DoTimer, or some similar add-on, and go practice on Dr. Boom. When I was affy I was able to add 80+ dps to my rotation this way.

Re: Raiding as affliction

Sometimes it's the simple things. Were you aggressive on the SoCs? Meaning...you can do one and get away with it on AoE pulls, or, you can squeeze in 3-4 and maybe a rain of fire.

AoE aggressiveness equals big damage meter numbers. Ask any mage

Well... aoe pulls are a different kettle of fish. Sure your DPS numbers are gonna be higher on those with SoC. But i wasnt counting those pulls.

I'm mostly talking about boss fights... tank and spank mostly.

Re: Raiding as affliction

Oh, ok. You mentioned trash a few times and watching his spell rotation on mobs, so I was kinda under the impression of that's where you were going.

Dunno honestly then. Maybe he had a lucky night on the crits.

Re: Raiding as affliction

I go with the lucky night theory if it didnt keep happening for me. My numbers are way too low.. 500-600 dps in Kara consistently.
