A request for help.
My guild is currently running Karazhan. We are just recently getting enough people geared and ready for this instance. We got to the shade for the first time last week and we seem to be getting hung up on him. Let me give you a bit of a history and explain some things so that you might be able to give me some advice. Group: 1 Holy Priest +1796 Healing No Buffs 1 Holy Palidan +1606 Healing No Buffs 2 Mages 2 Prot Warrior 1 Warlock(me) 1 Shadow Priest 1 Shaman(This toon is often subbed in and out with another mage.) ----Shami is a hybrid spec 31/0/30 1 Druid(Cat Form) Current Damage Output: In order of damage done: Lock Mage 1 Mage 2 Mage 3/Shaman Druid etc. *As far as damage goes the mages stay right in there until the boss fights where I tend to pull away a little bit because of CoD(god i love that on Curator) DOT's and Nightfall proccing every couple seconds(yay). In our guild around six months ago(about the time I started playing WoW) had a huge turnover certain people left for the more Elite Raiding Guilds, we are not that type of guild, but at the same time we would like to see some progression in at the minimum Kara and Zul'Aman. The reason I don't think we will go higher is that we just do not have enough geared 70's to make the 25 man runs before Wrath of the Lich King. History: As of three weeks ago we could get past the first couple bosses and than usually struggled, it would take us usually two runs to get up too Curator and he would stomp us. I think the curator was clearly the first real gear check as it says in most of the guides and we just flat out did not have enough DPS on him. As of today we are in a completely different position. We stepped into Kara last night and walked thru Huntsman, Moroes, Maiden, Opera, Curator without a wipe. (Poor maiden never new what hit her, fact of the matter I straight went to town on her.) So this brings us back to current being stuck on the Shade of Aran. We are getting him right around to where the elementals spawn and than the ensuing chaos puts us down. The problem we were having last night is that I was getting burned down right before the elementals popped and than we lost CC on two of the elementals. I seemed to be getting focus fired repeatedly I was having to pop pots and stone long before we were getting to the elementals. On this line of thought I am not blaming it on the healers as I was just flat taking massive damage. 1.) Do you have any advice on why I am getting focus fired and what I need to be doing to enhance my survivability in this fight without gimping my overall DPS? 2.) Do you have suggestions for group make up that might need to change? 3.) If you want take a peak at my gear and see if I have something wrong there. Note: I have read the guides and watched the kill video's I have a good understanding of the fight I am just trying to find what little piece we are missing. We had him down to 14% once last night and I thought we had him, it was a heartbreaker. I appreciate the help and wanted to let you all know what a huge help this site has been to me since I started Kara around a month ago. Thanks, AballaSonDi Oh yes Linkie to Armory The World of Warcraft Armory |

Re: A request for help.
Generally, shade favors groups with high physical dps. However, he should be very much doable with your makeup. Are your tanks switching to dps gear for shade? His attacks are completely random so there is no reason that a tank should be in tanking gear. About the elementals: Are they spawning around the same time as the pyroblasts go off? You can reduce their damage output greatly if you get curse of tongues on the ones that are not CC'ed. You should also banish one, chain fear one, and then kill at least one (maybe both depending on how fast you can do it). Just trying to outlast them until they despawn. |

Re: A request for help.
The tanks are putting on what DPS gear they have. We have been talking about rotating one of the tanks out for this fight as he doesn't have any DPS gear to really speak of. As for the elementals: The Plan: Fear One, Banish One, and CoT of the others. The problem we were having is that i was dying right before the elementals popped up. So I am wondering is my life tapping making me a target for the Shade? |

Re: A request for help.
Are you interrupting 2 out of 3 of his magic attacks? We usually only let him cast arcane bolt and interrupt the others, although bolt damages a lot it is the longest casting? |

Yes we are interrupting the casts- Warriors and Mages are taking turns on interrupts. |

Re: A request for help.
Don't feel bad, everyone struggles with him at first. My group was stuck on shade for nearly a month before we got him down. Sometimes it just takes that long to gear up for him. The thing that did the trick for us the first time was bringing in another healer. Swap one tank for a healer, even if their gear isn't great. Agro isn't an issue, and nothing you can do about it. Go full bore DPS right from the start. Make sure every last dot is ticking. Even if you don't normally use Immolate, use it. Shade is a very mobile fight, and DoTs are huge. Timing is big on Shade. If you get polymorphed while the elementals are up, forget it, its a wipe. If you are having issues with the elementals, it might be best to CC two of them, and DPS the other two down. If you can keep one banished and one feared, they rest of the group should be able to take out the other two pretty quickly, and then focus on Shade again. Don't let him drive ya nuts. Shade is probably the toughest boss in there, as far as raid coordination goes. |

I don't know, my vote for most annoying boss to coordinate goes to either of the two dragons. Back on topic... The only thing I can think of are general Shade strategy things that you've probably gone over already. Are people killing each other by moving during flame wreath (or whatever it's called)? Are people staying out of the blizzard? That kind of thing. Can the Spriest/warriors help fear the elmentals while also interrupting casts?

Re: A request for help.
I think adding a third healer is going to help tremendously. Also the tank that is going DPS, he has a full set of PvP gear. Is this good enough for him on DPS? We have never actually set down and figured out what his actual DPS is because, well, he is the MT. Another thing did anyone get a chance to look at my gear? If so is there something I need to change? Thanks, Aballah |

Re: A request for help.
First, i would suggest reading this... Karazhan: Am I ready? - The Warlocks Den Forums It is pretty long, but it is worth it to read. I know this is the wrong sub-forum for this, but I took a look at your gear, and some of your gem choices are pretty suspect. The Crit, haste and spell pen gems are pretty useless for you. What you really only want to use are +spell damage, +hit, or hybrid +hit/+spell damage gems in your raiding gear. If you have a blue socket that has a socket bonus thats worth keeping (like the FSW +hit socket bonus) you can use the +stam/+damage gem, but on a lot of gear you can safely ignore socket bonuses and put in whatever color you want. Your gloves could use gems, and I suppose you don't have them enchanted as you are hopping for better to drop or getting the badge ones...? Same with the wrist armor. You could put +spell damage enchant rather than stam if you are not replacing them sometime soonish. I would suggest that you pick up Timbal's Focusing Crystal - Item - World of Warcraft from heroic magT. it is a spectacular trinket for an affliction lock. I notice your spec has no points in suppression and you are way short of the hit cap. The above linked guide has a description of spell hit and why it is important, so I would suggest that you pay special attention to that part. Also, level your enchanting up and get the ring enchants. thats another +24 spell damage. As for the actual Shade fight (or all the boss fights in that group, actually) I would suggest that you forgo using CoD and start using Curse of Elements instead. You may lose top spot on the meters, but the raid over all will do far more damage if you, 3 mages and a shadow priest are all doing 10% more damage because of your curse. I would also say drop a tank for a3rd healer, or alternatively have your druid put to gether a healing set to OH a little if needed. |

Re: A request for help.
Thank you for your response. I had not been throwing up CoE because I am the highest DPS'er we have I guess I was thinking more along the lines that not gimping myself would help the raid more. I realize this is probably wrong and arrogant as I might just want to be on top of the damage meter. As for my gear, I also realize this isn't the proper thread, but it does all tie together. To my shame I am going to be completely honest about my gems when I bought them I was getting Spell Hit and Spell Pen confused. I now realize the difference and I am going to be correcting this. I also am going to try and pick up that trinket as well. I do see your point about not having the points in supression this was actually a concious move. I am hoping to hit cap here shortly(don't know if it is possible bit again I am hoping) as I already have well over the 76 required with the supression talent. The simple truth with this is I like being able to hit big with shadowbolt while still loving all my DOT's to death, but, of course I do understand the math behind the entire Spell Hit Theory. I was just enjoying the extra crit hit rating (especially when nightfall procs). Again I wanted to thank all for there help this is why I have decided to become active on this website. Thanks, LR |
