ZA Bear Run Tips

My guild has been working our way through ZA and we have been successfully clearing it for a few weeks now. We've gotten our third timed chest with about 6 minutes on the clock. Are there any tips for spell rotations or anything about the instance in general that you could share with me? With Wrath's date now being announced and the patch that takes bears out coming soon, we're looking to really try to get this done.

I was spec'd destruction as it's what I like to play but have went affliction for the dps boost to help the guild. I understand my gear is not top-rated for an affliction warlock and is not gemmed correctly for affliction/enchanted entirely.

Here is my personal armory link:The World of Warcraft Armory

Our raid make-up is: 1 Prot Warrior, 1 Feral Druid, 2 Frost Mages, 1 Enhancement Shaman, 1 Affliction Warlock (me), 1 Combat Rogue, 1 Resto Druid, 1 Holy Paladin, and 1 Holy Priest

These are our best geared/skilled members so the group make-up will not be changing any.

I sincerely apologize if there is already a thread about this somewhere or if this is considered the wrong place, but I have used the search function and was unable to come up with what I was looking for and there is no spot designated to bear runs in the Boss Strategies forum section.

Ok, first is 3 chests with 6 minutes left a flawless run or is there still room for improvement?

Always wait until you are done the event to loot chests obviously.

Your group has one more healer than it should, which would account for lower dps (longer boss fights.)

Looking at the classes/specs listed you probably are running with fairly poor synergy in your caster group. 60% of your groups DPS are casters whome get no totems or mana regen from an Spriest.

if your group comp cant change, it will be a tough battle to beat the timer with no group synergy and 1 less DPS.

Re: ZA Bear Run Tips

Also look into 'tricks / tips' to clear specific areas (MMOwned has a few tips / tricks for ZA) to help speed up things

IE: Kill Amani'shi Tempest to avoid fighting the gauntlet you can pull him from the water (go right insted of left to start the gauntlet) and have a warlock /target Amani'shi Tempest and send him in the Amani'shi Tempest will run down the mountain, kill him and then proceed to the boss.

You can also skip a lot of trash heading to Halazzi by jumping through hut windows

Re: ZA Bear Run Tips

i would drop a healer for a hunter (tranq shot on halazzi) and switch out one of the tanks for a pallytank (akilzon gauntlet, letting an entire side of birds out on Jan, halazzi gauntlet, etc...).

You should be destro (i didn't bother to armory you, but the saying is true 'if you need any of the gear in ZA then you probably aren't the best candidate for sucessful bear runs'). i don't know much about mages (they are food vending machines as far as I can tell) but I didn't think frost was their dps spec. I could be wrong. the point I am trying to make is that everyone needs their best damage spec because obviously time is of the essence. last i was aware, the benefits of curse of elements to you (at the loss of a damage curse) and the two (frost, really?) mages do not outweigh the damage you should be putting out as a sb nuker.

don't stop to loot anything except your badges (use group loot on the boss drops. again, if you need it you probably aren't the best choice for going on a bear run). that means if you see people getting hex sticks or whatever, they are wrong and just slowing you down (by whatever fraction of a second).

start with eagle and work your way around to bear then dragonhawk then lynx. pot, bandage, flask, oil as if it were a progession night for your guild in SWP or BT or whatever. even on trash.

and make sure everyone on the run is as comitted as you are. i understand RL > WoW (so they say, anyway), but people need to focus for those four bosses (go get your red bulls, snort your meth, potty break, feed the pets, deal with any potential spouse aggro beforehand).

Re: ZA Bear Run Tips

Ask the priest to respec to shadow if he has the gear .. two healers are more than enough to heal za.. especially bear run. Curse of elements on everything and make sure your destruction at this point in game affliction comes no where close to destruction in terms of dps/damage .. especially on bear runs where things die fast.

Re: ZA Bear Run Tips

your hit rating is shockingly bad if that's the correct gear ( i'm reading 91 atm ) so destruction might not be great for you

as some has suggested, you need to drop a healer and getting a pally tank is a huge benefit.

that aside the only thing i can suggest is that you start learning to skip pats and unnecessary packs. for example... the middle grp of 2 mobs can be avoided. the 2 bears on the way to bear boss can also be avoided... there's 1 pack that can be avoided on the way to lynx

Re: ZA Bear Run Tips

Looking at your group you've a far from ideal composition of specs/gearing so the biggest benefit to start with (before you even start looking at fine-tuning in terms of mobs to avoid, routes etc) is getting EVERYONE in your group specced and geared optimally.

To echo Coud - you've a very low hit rating and you've gemmed for haste as affliction as well as using damage/sta gems. Just gem for hit/damage (or plain +damage) and get those bracers enchanted. The very minimal amounts of haste aren't doing you any favours at all in either affliction or destruction modes.

I don't know which Shaman comes with you but they've all got some very sub-par gem choices and enchants (AP instead of str gems/enchants doesn't scale with BoK....runspeed/AP meta gems instead of the Skyfire Diamond).

Mages - gemming for haste early and in one case a terribly low hit rating...(and frost really does lag behind Fire for DPS).

Rogue - really, really low hit rating, crit and AP gems instead of hit/agi or straight agi....

I really don't want to have a "dig" at people's gear and specs too much but its the little things that make all the difference here...every single person will need to be giving 110% in terms of focus and preperation because to be honest the Bear run is tuned for a higher level of gearing.

I'm not saying you can't do it because I'm sure that with some effort you can - I am however saying that everything needs to be absolutely optimal.

Re: ZA Bear Run Tips

Well funnily enough you run almost the same class composition as we do for the bear runs with a couple of spec differences.

The main problems I can see on the run, but i'll summarise mainly what other people have said:

You're running with 3 healers. 1 DPS makes that much more difference. If you can do it with 2 healers (which you should), then try for it. A couple of months back we were trying with 3 healers and ended up about 6 minutes short which is about what you guys are doing now.

You're running with 2 mages. Fair enough that you've probably picked the players who are most competent but ideally you want to maximise the class synergy to get the most out of what you're playing with.

1: I would swap one of the mages with one of your best/most reliable hunters. Place him in the melee group so he benefits from the melee buffs. You've then also got a misdirection for faster pulling.

2: Get your holy priest to spec into shadow. 5% more caster damage and mana regen for your entire group makes up a LOT of time especially when healers have less chance of going out of mana and you're killing mobs slightly faster.

As people have said above it might be an idea for you to spec destruction for the runs. Affliction doesn't really give as much burst DPS as destruction and the majority of the run will be trash, which is what you are going to be needing. If you don't think you're quite ready to go destruction yet then one of your priorities should be to gear up for it.

Mage - I disagree with the point about the mages having to be fire for the run. I've played with a mage who played in both specs in several different runs and saw only marginal differences in the amount of damage he put out. If your mage knows how to use his spells and cooldowns correctly, i.e 2x icy veins on cooldowns etc, then I don't see why the fact that your mages are frost should be a problem so long as they are PVE frost spec.

Lastly here's a report of one of our (less recent) ZA runs. (I'll upload it again since it's due to expire soon)

Wow Web Stats

Mage in question was actually arcane spec, which proves your ZA run can be done well no matter what spec he is. The most valuable thing about arcane is the 40% less threat talent, which is why I was limited on so many of the fights. On Nalorakk for example the whole group was shouting to watch my threat :P

Re: ZA Bear Run Tips

My group and I have gotten 11 bears in the last month. Having 2 healers is going to help immensely. It may be very hard for you to run it with one of the two healers being a pally. Pallies are great at one target healing but lack the group heals. Looks like Solarus runs it with a Holy Pally so maybe I'm wrong. My suggestion, if you want to keep the same group would be this. (If members have the off spec gear) Have the Pally go Prot and warrior go DPS. A Pally tank owns ZA trash and allows your mages/lock the ability to AE mobs. A good DPS warrior can pump out some impressive damage, especially when whirlwinding. You should be destro for the burst damage as stated. Your Shammy could help heal if things get too hairy. Healers should remember to drink mana pots on cool down and bring stacks of them. Tank sets pace and you need to chain pull. When you get a chance to eat/drink do it even if its only 2 seconds. Druid can innervate when needed. Make sure everyone is fully buffed with consumables. Lots of other small tips but your make up is holding you back the most atm. Good luck with the bear hunting. I love bear runs.
