Threat issues

Any other high end locks having threat issues?

It seems on Malygos and Sartharions drakes (speed dps on the drakes with multiples up), our raid locks are having threat issues. I understand on malygos, we teleport back during the storms so we kinda have to lay off but I actually respec'd to try and start lowering threat. I'm still not top of my gear yet, but it seems to be getting worse.

Just curious if I'll have to manage it better in the future...until recently, it hasn't been an issue.

any comments?

Re: Threat issues

I can out-threat most tanks in 5-mans... Especially on bosses where my damage has time to start stacking up.

(Some tanks stop generating threat towards the end of the fight because they think they have a comfortable lead. Since I start my Drain Soul at the 25% mark, sometimes I'll get smushed right at the end of the fight.)

Re: Threat issues

I have been doing a lot of pugging, and those fights seem to give me a great deal of problems with threat later on in the fight. I have played around with affliction and demo destro, The best thing i can say is save your soul shatters to the end and give the tanks 5 sunders, i usually give tanks 40-50k and with proper timing on the soul shatter i never over take the tank. 10k soul drain ticks are wicked though

Re: Threat issues

I dont have any problem at all. You just need to have good tank and thats mainly why i hate puging on my lock. If i pug i want a paly tank cuz theres a bug for them right now the rank 1 and 2 or there shield slam kinda ability ( dont remember the real name ) arent on the same cooldown. So they can basicly generate an amazing amount of threat with that.

Re: Threat issues

funny thing about the timing of this thread.

Today in 25 man Sarth was the first time i ever pulled aggro and died cose of it. And not once, but 2 times.

First atempt i pulled aggro from Sarth when immolate landed.(the spells i used were in order: haunt, corr,Curse of Agony, sl,ua, immo). I blamed the tank, he had almost 10 seconds to generate aggro and he didn't.
Second atempt, i got aggro from the drake. Picked up by OT, me firing haunt, Curse of Agony, corr,sl, OT died (was in the flames) picked up by a DK, then immediately switched to me and one-shoted me

Third time was the charm
Haunt->SB-Curse of Agony-corr-sl-ua-immo-soul shatter (i was at 120% tank threat). Then it went fine

But except today, only one other time i was able to pass the tank on threat, and that was at loatheb 25 man, when i acually shattered + got a hand of salvation to go below the tank (we get the spores by group rotation, and i was in the last group to get the spores

Re: Threat issues

I can pull agro fairly easy in 5 mans, unless its a paly tank. In 10 and 25 mans I have yet to have any agro problems. My gear is not as nice as the OP though.

Re: Threat issues

I dunno what's going on lately, but I am an Agro MACHINE. My gear isn't even spectacular or anything, and I'm even speced into affliction spell agro reduction, I have no idea wtf is going on. Pulled agro raiding IF on Bronzebeard, all bosses in 5mans lately, it's nuts.

I blame DK tanks, lol

Re: Threat issues

I've noticed threat issues due to gearing differences between me and the tank. When I started heroics at 80, I had no threat issues (or at least none that weren't caused by my own stupidity) Early on I met up with a group of great people, including two super tanks, and we all sort of geared together. One of the tanks I ran with was particularly zealous about gearing. Then the other tank I ran with recently went away for holiday stuff, and the super-geared one has been leveling his holy pally, so I started pugging again with gear and a spec that has me about 2200 +damage self-buffed (which is roughly 1100 more +sp than I had as a new level 80 if I recall right).

I rip aggro off of a fresh level 80 tank so fast it's not funny. Running with "my" tanks, I can casually do 1800-2200 DPS depending on the particular heroic and the group makeup; running with a fresh level 80 tank, I must stay at about 1700 DPS or below or I'll have mobs trying to munch on me. I esentially can't do a "good" tight rotation, and I must let DoTs drop off, avoid most AOE, and/or hold back shadow bolts or incinerates for a few seconds when I'm riding their threat. The difference is astounding. And I think it's entirely because of gear; I've run with a few PUG tanks that seemed like they knew what they were doing, just by observing them, but they just couldn't generate the threat per second I needed to be able to do really good DPS. It had to be a gearing issue.

That said, I've never had trouble in Naxx or Obsidian Sanctum...however, the times I've run those, I was running with the geared tanks I've been doing heroics with. I would expect though that if they were undergeared, I'd be having the same issues that I'm seeing in Heroic PUGs though.

Re: Threat issues

I've been getting a lot of threat issues lately. I run with my guild MT and OT in heroics most often, as well as 10-man Naxx. My MT has been on me about backing off so I don't steal aggro. Even with 10% reduction in talents and 2% reduction in a meta gem, I'm on top of him 40-50s after a soul shatter.

What the heck am I doing wrong? The MT is better geared than I am, and it's really getting old having to let all the dots drop off for 20s then starting back up again.

Like we did 10man Loatheb tonight, and I had to soulshatter, back off, soul shatter again, and still was on top of him. Of course then he's mad that the fight is taking too long.
