Tips for a fledgling raid leader

I just rejoined my old guild as my previous guild hadn't been raiding consistantly and I missed most of the TOC 10/25 man content as well as not being able to put groups together for heroics. Sucks to be the new guy:(

Now that I am back w/ my old guild I'm just not geared well, so I volunteered to lead lower/old raids and dungeons to help gear m=not only myself but the fresh 80s in the guild.

I've experienced most of the content but I am missing a bunch to content so it will be a mix of old and new. I have never lead a raid and only put a few groups together and generally past the lead to the tank so everything can be marked up. So this endevor will be a challenge to me and I am looking for some tips.

We have a loot system in place that I will be following, and have a pretty good idea on how things are put together, but never used the UI or anything. I have begun to amass cheat sheets, and will be getting file cards for quick reference, but I am still at a loss.

Soooo experienced raid leaders please respond. I do not want to fall completely on my face

TankSpot

For all the old and even many new Wrath of the Lich King raids, watch the videos to familiarize yourself, the strats are pretty sound.

Otherwise, my suggestion is that for each fight you map out ahead of time what your core group makeup is and then what you'd need to fill with so that you are knocking your head against a wall because you had a terrible group makeup for one of the fights. If you are not a well geared group, my suggestion is that you bring one DPS that is capable of switching to heals for certain fights that may be healing intensive like Saph or difficult to coordinate otherwise like 4 HM if people havent done it before.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was hoping more would weigh in. I have gotten a index card file set up so I can take notes on each 10-25 man fight so I can buid the raid properly and help w/ assigning duties for those who do not know.

Wish me luck.

Re: Tips for a fledgling raid leader

A few things I've noticed that help speed things up and make an overall better experience:

If you're not familiar with a raid, pug it first to see what others do.

Ideally, the lootmaster should be a dps who can do loot while the tanks lead everyone else to clear trash. Give the MT the responsibility of setting the pace and keeping things moving. Nothing slows a raid down more than pausing too long during loot because people get bored, start chatting about other things, and go afk.

If you're leading a 25man, give someone the responsibility of filling vacancies should they arise. Or at least - helping fill vacancies. This is another thing that can really drag the raid down if it takes too long. The result is that people get distracted and distractions cause wipes.

Have vent info and loot rules macroed so you can broadcast them at the touch of a button. If you're pugging people in they will ask - repeatedly.

Insist that Pallys use Pallypower and get their buffing crap together. If I had a nickle for everytime I've seen "Could I get kings/wisdom/might?" I'd be a rich man.

Always assign healers. Better yet, decide who is the most experienced healer and have them assign healers all the time.

The best raids I've been in were ones where the RL was confident and forthright in what he/she wanted to see happen. This is true for everything from tactics to all the things I mentioned above. When the RL is assertive everyone knows what is expected and goes about their job - all good. When the RL is wishy-washy or non-communicative, people WILL fill in the gaps and then you have too many chiefs, not enough indians which leads to a lot of confusion. It's ok to ask opinions or even take a vote, but then make a definite decision and say "this is what I want to see happen..."

3.2 Re: Tips for a fledgling raid leader

This is a topic I am somewhat passionate about as I have been raid leading for about 1.5 years now in a rather casual guild.

Casual guild actually bring certain things to the table that you don't have to worry about with full blown raiding guilds, but I won't go into that here.

1.) Know the fights like the back of your hand. You have to understand everything that is happening in a fight, special abilities, ranges, class roles etc. Every little detail you need to understand. Sometimes this isn't possible on newer content so you might have to wing it a little, make sure your group understands that. You will over time develop fellow raiders that you know and trust there opinion and they can help you through these times. For example I use officer chat with other officers or special channels with certain people all the time to keep communications open.

2.) Don't be afraid to establish your leadership role. Don't be a butt, however, you must let people know you are in control and making the decisions. Don't be afraid to boot someone if they aren't getting it done, along with this understand that "not getting it" and flat not doing your job are two different things.

3.) Always follow established loot rules. Never deviate from this...ever...unless you are changing the whole loot system.

4.) Know the classes. You need to know what each class is capable of and what your raid brings to the table. There are fights where you will need a rogue to kick something, or a lock to banish something. You need to know all of these things and use them to make your raid more succesful, it is no longer just about knowing your own class.

5.) Understand pertinent buffs that different classes bring. Buffs can play a huge roll in new content and progression fights they can be that extra little difference between a win and a loss.

6.) Know your raiders: You need to understand your raiders and how they play. This is especially true with your tanks and your healers. Run with them as often as possible, run heroics, run old raids, pvp together, etc. This will make your life much easier as you will know what to expect of them in tight situations.

I could go on like this for awhile but I will stop there.
