Hello. I have 2 80's. Mainly played a mage from the beginning, both PvE and PvP. But recently I've been raiding less and less. Rolled a Warlock and fell in love with it's PvP (mostly affliction). So now I have 2 mains: Mage for PvE (well geared) and Lock for PvP (also decently geared). I want focus on one class, and I'm thinking warlock. The question is directed at experienced PvE locks. On my realm, every high DPSing lock is Destro. I have yet to meet a geared raiding Affliction lock. I try to be different, and sometimes it ends up negatively affecting my performance. I'm hoping this won't happen if I roll Aff. So the question: is Affliction a viable PvE spec? Is it capable of topping charts? Any tips and armory links to Aff locks would help. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Affliction PVE, worth it?
Its not as good at the moment for pve no. But you can still make it work. We have 2 locks in our guild that will not change from affliction and they constantly out dps the destruction locks. Affliction single target just cant keep up with destruction though sorry to say. After the patch is a different story. Corruption will get its buff from haste which i think will bring it even. |

Actually atm destruction is better than affliction except for some fights(like yogg) As it seems after next patch affli will be better but eh the patch isnt here yet :P |

Re: Affliction PVE, worth it?
Vek, Personally I class myself as an afflction warlock, I just love it, it's such a beautiful talent tree. However I think theres times where we all need to help out the guild etc. My guild is fairly small and in longer fights we need someone who can help out with mana etc so ive ended up going down the destro route as an offspec to get replenishment. There will be a few fights where affliction will be horrible. But just do your best. The majority however, you will do just fine so dont worry about it. Yes destro is the top dps spec but that doesnt mean affliction cant shine at times

Re: Affliction PVE, worth it?
I played affliction exclusively until about a month ago. I love the play style, I love to dot up multiple mobs, I love the ds execute phase. The reasons I justified staying affliction to myself (I'm GL) were: 1) I felt I was good at it, usually out-dpsing our other two destruction locks with similar gear. Bosses were going down, the end result is what counted. 2) We didn't have a regular fire mage. 3) I had more fun playing affliction. It's a game. I switched to destruction because I've come to appreciate the play-style a bit more and now that we're in heroic toc progression mode I want every bit of dps I can squeeze out. We single tank Jaraxxus and it's impossible without burst. We've got a good fire mage on a regular basis and also a demo lock recently to round out our buffs a bit more. Re: Affliction PVE, worth it?
Well i was always an afflock through and through until i realised destro was the real deal. Don't get me wrong, i did and still enjoy playing destro, but the longer it is since i played affli as a main spec, the more i miss it. But then again there are things i like and dislike about both (maybe i just get bored with dps sometimes, rather than trees :P). Anyway, enough rambling. The next patch will soon hit and like most big patches, everything changes. I was really hoping demo would have its time but it seems affli will be the one to watch, which is great. Bottom line is, do you want to raid seriously? If so, go destro, you will only add more damage output to that boss, which always helps. If not, by all means spec affliction. It does depend on your guild, your play style. Some people just don't 'get' destro, and can't play it to the level they can with affli (though they should be able to really, just they don't want to). Some bigger guilds/raids require a lock to be affliction for variety with the crit debuff etc, and on certain bosses. Tailor your decision with this and just make sure you enjoy whatever you play. But for me, i enjoy doing alot of damage, which affli doesn't offer me right now. |

I've played Affl since vanilla and do recognize the spec is on a downturn now. I have a destro dualspec I play around with but I have all my hotkeys/combos so memorized that I just don't want to switch. You can put up some good numbers with affl but a large part of that means staying alive through the execute phase so you can catch back up dps-wise. In general, if the other locks are destro with similar gear & are not totally terrible at their rotation, they will beat me on most fights. Just remember to dot multi-mobs when/if possible and drain during the execute phase on any mob & affliction should do ok. |

While I my self am not an affliction warlock, I do raid with 2 affliction locks, and we do rather well (we did 3D zerg last night, woot!) Both specs can do comparable dps, and although destro is the "top" spec, most players cant bring out that extra dps, and would benefit more from more skill at one spec rather than switching constantly to the "top" spec. Also keep in mind that with affliction you get a execute range which would help a LOT for fights like anub ToGCr. -Goodie

Re: Affliction PVE, worth it?
Yea, all great comments. I myself enjoy affliction the most out of the talent trees (not to say i dont enjoy what destruction and demonology bring to the table) mostly because it is unique to warlocks and never gets old for me (i think of keeping the dots up and seeing how many shadow bolts i can throw out as kind of a game) but if you are comfortable switching to destro then more power to you. Anyway as far as tips go get glyphs of Haunt, Curse of agony, and life tap. Make sure all your dots and debuffs are up on the target, spam shadowbolts when you dont need to refresh any dots, and DO NOT clip your dots. Use the 53/1/17 spec (or 53/0/18). Go with succy for your pet. And the stats are (correct me if im wrong) spellpower=1.4dps haste=.9 dps crit and pirit=.7 dps and int=.2 |
