Or use some filter that puts 3.1 before 3.0...
like, there is 4 topics 2 from 3.1 and 2 from 3.0

they organize:
2 thanks 3.1
1 thanks 3.1
2 thanks 3.0
1 thanks 3.0

Because when they make a post to refer from a new patch, is because there is changes that makes it impossible to keep talking as it was in 3.0
that said, would be non-important topics from old patchs, not that it should be ignored, but have less priority xD

I believe thats how ElitistJerks is setup.. i've only replied to like... 1 thread there though. :P But a certain time limit is pretty good, but whats to stop them just waiting out the 7 days without looking anything up and posting a "help me" thread anyways? just a thought.

cheers
I actually think Akasha's is the best solution.

I don't use elitist jerks. I have to search through a 100 page thread to find the exact post on the exact page that the theorycraft becomes relevant, and with no signings or exact patch taggings, and a poor memory I don't know exactly what each patch happens. Usually made worst by a front post that kept up to date for a while but 4-20 months ago the poster stopped playing wow and the mods didn't change it.

Screw it, I'll do my own maths.

Put simply, forcing replies creates the opposite problem. No doubt some posters will just wait 7 days, but quite a lot of the time there will either be one of two events. The poster wanders off as they can't get instant gratification (nothing of value is lost, to quote.. erm.. something) or they wait and search, be it out of frustration, luck, or enlightenment, and realising search is brilliant. And if it only works like that 30% of the time, it's an improvement. I suspect it'll be closer to 100 than 30. Especially if the user has it made clear why they can't post.

Re: Trialing a new feature...

I had an idea while reading the initial rant thread against help posts about a week back, and so after seeing this thread I thought I'd throw it out.
Why not create a beginners area?
I've seen it used quite successfully on other boards that I've belonged to in the past. Instead of locking out newly registered members looking for help, limit them to posting in the the beginners area for what ever period of time you like. If posts appear in other threads that mod's feel belong in the beginners area, move them there. You could even create stickies at the top of the area, with links to FAQ's and other helpful guides.
You create an area where people looking for help can go and congregate and help each other out. Give newbies an area to share and discuss the problems they are having with others in the same boat. Those more experienced members who feel like giving back, can help if they wish. Those members that don't feel like helping out newbies never have to set foot there and your other discussion areas don't get cluttered with "help" threads.
I would be willing to bet that the spikes you see in the number of threads requesting help are directly related to major overhauls of the game or big patch updates like the recent 3.1 update. While I'm sure it applies to some, people being "lazy" probably isn't as much of an issue as is the fact that with new content/ upgrades the information just isn't there. The talent tree's change, and the old builds and specs referred to in old posts and talked about before, don't necessarily apply. Therefore searching for an answer really doesn't work as those old posts aren't relevant.

Just my $.02

We do. And nothing about being a newbie will change that. We also have new stickies created for every major patch change to discuss just those changes. So people can use those.

As with most things, there are always exceptions. If someone has just registered and wants to kick off a new discussion thread (ie not a 'help me' post), they are more than welcome to Contact me directly and request to be given permissions. I can manually move people between groups, so I can always promote them early if I think it's a valid post.

I'm hoping this will encourage (force?) new members to actually search around and find existing threads to first read, then reply to. IF people try to get around this new feature by replying to the first thread they can find with a 'help me' type post, they will get an infraction and possibly a temporary posting ban.

As I mentioned, this is just a trial time period. I can shorted or adjust it as needed. Will be based on how it pans out, and no, 100 complains from new members wanting to get talent build, gear or DPS help won't cut it.

Is the ability to start new threads automated? I think the 7 days have past for me but I still see the banner.

Normally, questions like this are better suited for the Contact a Moderator forum. http://wowmb.net/forums/f113/

This helps us see questions like this a little easier. I'll highlight your question so that Milaulis can take a look at the issue.
