Blizzcon More Detail on Talents and Progression in Cataclysm

Summarizing the latest from Blizzcon on talents and character progression. Blue post in full here.

Mastery

..while we will add some new talents for Cataclysm, we also want to prune passive and mandatory talents so that you have more points available for fun or utility talents. Under the new plan, you’ll get passive bonuses just for spending points in the appropriate tree. Passive bonuses are things that increase stats such as damage, healing, and tanking, as well as stat-like attributes such as haste or crit. An example of a passive bonus for Assassination rogues would be increased poison damage the more points they spend in Assassination. Likewise, a rogue specialized in Subtlety will receive an energy cost bonus...

Path of the Titans
Path of the Titans is another great new feature we covered that encompasses rewarding progression at max level. This new feature implements a third new type of glyph called “Ancient Glyph,”... You’re able to unlock a path and progress within that path as you continuously engage in different aspects of the game. As you advance, you will be able to unlock special glyph sockets for your character. You can also respec your path at any time, in case you decide to change your path. You earn these ancient glyphs by using the new Archaeology secondary profession to recover and trade in titan artifacts. Each path will have 2-3 choices per rank, and again, you can respec if you decide to go down another path. You can earn progress down any of these paths by doing things such as questing, raiding, PvP, trade skills, etc., with a possible weekly cap for maximum progress. Over time, you’ll be able to unlock new ancient glyphs that will greatly benefit your character. This new system will be accessible to all players at max level.

This is pretty cool in theory. I worry that min/max people will show what is ultimately the best set up and people will just do that. I do like the idea of new talent trees, but then again I like new things. It keeps the game interesting

I would like it if there were pvp paths and pve paths... pvp paths could help us survive against some classes like rogues. I think that would be interesting!

With duel spec. we can now setup a PvE spec/gear set/UI layout to use inside an instance & have a completely different spec./gear set etc for PvP but to have a greater difference between the 2 would be very desirable & it could also be possible to use a PvP (survivable) spec. in some unique PvE encounters also.

Re: More Detail on Talents and Progression in Cataclysm

the move to mastery is awesome

there's a pic here => BlizzCon 2009: Mastery system and talent trees

right now we go deep into tree XYZ because the talents are so imba compared to cross speccing. in WoW 4.0 we're speccing deep into a tree because it provides actual tangible rewards in terms of better stats etc

the live blog on wow.com also notes what they want to do with the talents

BlizzCon 2009: WoW Game Systems panel live blog

all in all I'm liking blizzard's new approach to talents

Re: More Detail on Talents and Progression in Cataclysm

which ? mastery?

blizzard doesn't like all these mandatory talents that say give +3% hit or w/e. things like "everytime you use spell XYZ, you also increase your run speed by Q%" are fun but no one picks it because of said mandatory talents.

WoW 4.0 will delete all these mandatory talents and leave you with the fun ones ( that's the goal roughly ), you'll instead make up for these mandatory stats by speccing deep into one tree. with the actual mastery stat found on gear being used to enhance one particular stat within that tree.

eg ret pally has their CD reduced by stacking mastery ( as shown in blizzcon anyway )

this might kill hybrid spec like 40/31 etc but honestly it's a bit early to tell.

The new guild system sounds exciting. I really like the part about heirloom recipes for your guild. If your guild has it, then you have it, but as soon as you leave the guild its no longer accessible to you...the only thing I could see issues with would be if there was a really good guild and they disbanded... seen it happen 3 times :( but I could see that being a reason you would want to stick around and try to work things out

This archaeology profession sounds dodgy. To me it seems more like super inscription than an actual new profession. I don't see why they couldn't have simply added this stuff into the existing profession and spent their time focusing on other things.

I guess that people expect a new profession with each xpac but the last two brought new and unique methods of customization to the game...this is just more of the same.

I am interested in seeing where it goes, however.

Re: More Detail on Talents and Progression in Cataclysm

That would be just weird. How would you justify finding an ancient relic through tailoring and skinning? Some professions just don't fit on that model, so i'd rather have a dedicated prof that opens doors to everyone instead of some makeshift content on my old one. This is something intended to be available to everyone so it can't be on any main prof. As for talent trees, masteries and whatnot it's still to blurry for me, so i'll wait and see where this is going. For the time being i'll stick with WORGENS!!

As far as I understand archaeology is secondary profession. It would suck big time if we had drop one of our primary professions just to get a glyph for path of the titan :-)
