Changes to PTR 3.3 04/11/09

There are a handful of changes for Warlocks in the new PTR patch notes. Orange highlights are changes from previous. Please note that the change to Molten Core is from MMO-Champion, but isn't yet reflected in that patch notes and may be inaccurate.

Demonology
Molten Core: Redesigned. This talent now increases the duration of Immolate by 3/6 seconds and provides a 4/8% chance to gain the Molten Core effect when Corruption deals damage. The Molten Core effect empowers the next 3 Incinerate or Soul Fire spells cast within 15 seconds (Incinerate: increases damage done by 6/12/18% and reduces cast time by 10/20/30%; Soul Fire: increases damage done by 6/12/18% and increases critical strike chance by 5/10/15%). Molten Core now has a new spell effect.

Pets
Inferno: The cooldown on this summoning spell has been reduced from 20 minutes to 10 minutes. Cannot be used in Arenas.

The inferno change is welcome but doesn't go far enough. I'd like inferno to be our version of army of the dead although slightly lower powered being a lower level skill. The Infernal SHOULD NOT get rid of our current pet!

Inferno will be very fun in bgs.. wish I could use SS and Inferno in Arena, but oh well. Since there is a 1min duration of the Infernal however, I really wish it would not unsummon my other perma-pet.

mmo-champion seems to have newer (or older) information... they announced a nerf to molten core (from three to two talent points).

Re: Changes to PTR 3.3 04/11/09

I have a newly 80 druid that was dual-specced tank and dps feral.

I dropped the tank build for balance. Molten Core is now similar to eclipse, except with charges.

So I guess it's yet another PowerAura string to add to the list. Personally, I wish they would leave its proc on both corruption and Shadow Bolt.

There was a discussion yesterday on the 0/56/15 rotation and I mentioned that on certain encounters (Jaraxxus' Portals, Snobolds) your DoTs won't tick through. So at high burst times (Pot of Speed with Meta up, stunned Icehowl, the two listed above) this ultimately isn't that great of a talent.

I try to think on these terms: My Sbolt is at a 1.9 second cast time with raid buffs and my 882 haste.

So if the new MC procced off of shadowbolt and corruption, as it does on live, I think it would probably translate better.

The Decimation change also would play into this better. Expecting a Demo lock, on a target with less than 35% health to continually refresh Corruption and ISB is pretty unfortunate in my eyes. Clunky is a word that comes to mind.

It's adding a further damage penalty to keeping up the "Scorch" debuff when you look at it rotationally.

Now before I get shred here, this is a buff. Demo's DPS is going to by higher simply because you are going to spam Soul Fire after 35% as your filler. But I really wish they would pull away from Patchwerk and try to think in context of how anal you have to be to maximize your DPS as a caster now. Since movement is a DPS loss, I try to think on terms of my windows of opportunity to do damage.

Please, Blizz, let Shadow Bolt proc Molten Core.

Additionally, I am under the assumption that I'm going to drop my glyph of Meta for the glyph of Quick Decay as Demo, which, if that glyph shortens the length of corruption (rather than inserting ticks, which is probably what is going to happen) it lowers your opportunities for Molten Core to Proc or to spam fillers.

Meta/Ruin is now firmly entrenched as the most complex Warlock build followed closely by Demo/Destro hybrids.

Think about it:

Maintain Glyph of Life Tap
Pop Meta at the proper time
Manage your Felguard
Keep your DoTs up (one of which at T9 level gear will probably be up for some 25-30% less per cast than it is now per cast via Glyph of Quick Decay)
Watch for Decimation procs.
Watch for Molten Core procs and only use the incinerate proc if Immolate is up.
Is melee taking big damage? No? Charge in with Immolation Aura.
Immo Aura done? Port out.

And so on.

If you are going to let shadow bolt proc it you almost have to let soul fire proc it too don't you? In execute range you aren't going to be using shadowbolt any more or is the point to help balance out pre and post execute range dps?

Not necessarily, if you are talking raiding, then your mages should be arcane. Why?

2 buttons, 8000 DPS.

So you will be expected to maintain your ISB debuff.

In a perfect world of perfect modeling, let's say a boss fight is 5 minutes.

Let's say the boss' health goes down perfectly from 100% to 0% as time goes from 100% to 0.

So 35% of the fight you will be using Soul Fire.

So you will have to launch approxiamately 4 Shadow Bolts in the 105 seconds that is 35% of that time to maintain ISB's uptime.

If they made infernal a once per fight cooldown that did this, it would get used a lot. As it is I use it 90% for fun. And that's rarely.

You're absolutely right. Saw it on MMO-Champs and copied it from the official patch notes (which may not have been updated). I'll correct. Thanks!

Exactly. On my DK I use gargoyle and army of the dead a whole lot, at the very least once per day. I can't recall the last time I used Inferno.
