Yeah, I always put up CoE unless there's an Unholy DK with Ebon Plaguebringer or Balance druid with Earth and Moon.

Think of it like this: If there's nobody else to put up that 10-13% spell damage debuff, is your personal Curse of Agony damage going to be greater than an extra 10%-13% damage for you and all other spellcasters?

No, it won't. Curse of Agony damage is not even greater than even 10% of the rest of my other damage. And that looks to be true of all warlock builds at SampleOutput - simulationcraft - Google Code

CoA vs. CoE

Hey All,

I'm just back to WoW from a long hiatus. I got to 80 pretty quick and have some theoretical questions regarding a Destruction/Improved Imp build.

In the average fight, would it be better to use Curse of Agony with a Molten Core build, or would it be better to ditch the Molten Core talent and use CoE whilst fighting, so that your Imp (improved via talents/glyph) could get the 10% bonus from CoE?

Thanks!

A real quick search The Warlocks Den Forums leads to the answers you seek such as this great post Raiding Spec Roundup - Part 1 - 0/41/30 - The Warlocks Den Forums

Re: CoA vs. CoE

I'd already read that thread, and many, many others, but still haven't seen an answer regarding my original post.

I'll rephrase my question:

Assuming I have a deep Destruction build and roll with the improved Imp, would it be better for me to

1) Take the Molten Core talent and use Curse of Agony for DPS and as a trigger for Molten Core, which is a chance of a 10% bonus to fire spells only.

or

2) Use CoE, for which both the Imp and Myself receive guaranteed 10% damage bonus.

I'm not very experience in end-game raiding, etc., so I'm wondering which would provide more efficiency and higher DPS.

Thanks.

Re: CoA vs. CoE

It really depends on your play style and raid makeup.

Whether you use Elements or not, Molten Core pretty much required for a Destruction build, and 1 point is even recommended for Affliction, depending on gear. If you use Corruption, it's even more beneficial.

Curse of Agony will almost always be a DPS gain for you, unless there are magic resists/absorption effects involved. I actually did a test of this yesterday with a 53/0/18 build with both hit talents on a dummy, using OOM, 5-, and 10-minute test periods. I was pushing 3.1k with Curse of Agony and only around 2.6-2.7k with Elements on average, so I would say that Curse of Agony consistently gives you more DPS than CoE. Your imp also doesn't contribute that much to your DPS. Mine is consistently under 5% of my DPS with no improving talents, but when I was using a 53/3/15 build with glyphed imp, it never broke 10%. I don't think a 1% overall DPS increase (just looking at the imp here) will justify losing Curse of Agony damage and MC procs.

In a nutshell: Take Molten Core, use Curse of Agony unless there is no Moonkin or Unholy DK. Read Elitist Jerks.

Re: CoA vs. CoE

Thank you for the answer and for being helpful, that's the kind of information I was looking for.

I was thinking the Imp could be more useful if you had the empowered/improved imp talents and the Imp glyph.

Thought he'd be more DPS, but maybe not.

I'll check into elitist jerks as well.

EDIT: Just spec'd into Molten Core and using Curse of Agony instead of CoE and my DPS went up by about 200. Thanks again Jon - much more helpful than a link to "search".
