Nightfall vs Shadowburn

*** Multiple 'Nightfall vs Shadowburn' threads merged. Please be aware of the dates of some of the replies. See end pages for most up to date assistance. ***

Greetings,

I play a warlock that is currently level 33. I intend to get SL and either Nightfall or Shadowburn. I'd like to get any respondents opinions as to which would be more useful on a pvp server and why.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Nightfall vs Shadowburn

I went full destruct till i hit level 60. Shadowburn does help quite abit as its instant but requires a soulshard.

Gives you the advantage of hitting harder compared to the chance of procc from NF

Re: Nightfall vs Shadowburn

I'll have to agree that i'd rather have something (although it uses a shard) that i can use at will rather then something that has to proc, only because i dont like to rely on procs.Just comes down to preference i suppose, also you wont get bane going the NF route,so i would take into consideration more of what your playstyle is like rather then single talents in trees you like.

Re: Nightfall vs Shadowburn

For me, the crucial factor in deciding Shadowburn vs Nightfall was that 5/5 Improved Corruption *had* to be a part of my build. I delayed getting Soul Link until 45 so I didn't have to give up insta-cast corruption.

So, given that I was going to put 5 points in Affliction anyway, and the first 5 points of the Destruction tree are crap (IMO), so I'd be level 50 before I'd get any benefit out of the Destruction tree (when I started getting Bane), which didn't really suit me because I do a lot of BGs in my late 40s.

The low levels of the Affliction tree are just so good (Improved Lifetap, Insta-cast Corruption, Amplify Curse, Suppression) that it's easier to go for Nightfall, and then respec for Shadowburn later than to go directly for Shadowburn (IMO). So I'm levelling towards NF/SL, and I'll respec 7/31/13 when I hit 60.

Re: Nightfall vs Shadowburn

Am I correct in my interpretation of how +Shadow damage is applied to spells that a Nightfall procced Shadow Bolt will get more benefit (86%) of +damage gear than Shadowburn(43%)?

I'm trying to make a similiar decision about respeccing. I had Nightfall for a while and liked it, though I would get annoyed when it procced too late to really be of good use. I've got Shadowburn right now, and like the ability to cast it when I need it and it will do the most good. But I'm considering speccing more points into Affliction (8/31/12 spec now) and possibly dropping Soul Link for Siphon Life. I just can't decide which spec I like better, and blowing another 20+ gold is not something I'm going to do lightly.

Does anyone know if Siphon Life benefits from +Shadow Damage gear?

Nightfall + Shadowburn, and I don't know beyond that...

I'm discovering as I play my 'Lock (level 26 now), that I am REALLY liking the triple-stacked DoTs, and especially my Drain Life/Mana/Soul, and other "Channeling" spells.

I've determined that I want to go up the Affliction tree, to Nightfall and Grim Reach. But beyond that, I don't quite know what I should do. I know i want Shadowburn for PvP. but I'm not sure exactly how far up the Destruction tree I want to go after that.

as of this moment, I have Affliction all the way up to 2/2 Nightfall(off the top of my head). my next two points are going into Grim reach. after that...I have no clue.

any suggestions as to how I may want to proceed from there? any thoughts on the higher-tier Affliction and Destruction talents?

Re: Nightfall + Shadowburn, and I don't know beyond that...

I like my SM/Ruin build - Affliction up to Shadow Mastery (picking up Curse of Exhaustion) and Destruction up to Ruin. I like it because I can still drain tank as well as nuke and get the large number crits.

The biggest drawback is survivability. I'm not a glass cannon or anything but I have to have a decent amount of stamina to compensate for lack of demonic embrace, improved healthstone, etc.

One of the things I like best about being a warlock is the fact that we really have three viable talent trees and endless combinations of talents.

I'm actually putting serious thought into going full affliction. 32/8/11I really like the DoTs and Drains, and Channeled spells. and Insta-casting is fun.

just not sure about the merits of Dark Pact vs. anything else I could get.

Re: Nightfall + Shadowburn, and I don't know beyond that...

Dark Pact is ok, great for leveling, but once you have a large mana pool (level 60) you will find it increasingly annoying.... click click click click!! I wonder if you could macro it in with your other spells -- don't recall it activating global cooldown.

Re: Nightfall + Shadowburn, and I don't know beyond that...

I personally have loved building towards SM/Ruin as I leveled and consider it a best of both worlds, I also have never missed when I specced away from demonology. The extra hits are great, but I do not miss hem and certainly do not consider myself a glass canon. Just get all ‘of the eagle’ gear.

SM/Ruin works great in PvP and PvE.
