Maybe I should start with this question first: is there even a standard way that people use to measure burst damage? For example, which spec has the highest DPS you can hit, in say, 10 seconds? In many Ulduar fights, it seems that burst damage is more important than having high theorycrafting numbers that are unreachable because of movement, etc. For example, I was having a tough time putting up max DPS as affliction in fights like XT-002 where the boss resets so many times and fights like Razorscale where there are a lot of mobs that need to get burned down quickly. I am really excited to try out the new destruction changes in 3.1.2. It seems like it will be the highest tank and spank DPS and I thought it would have been the best burst damage spec as well. Will it? Bonus points for not having to bother the raid with summoning a doomguard. Maybe I can finally stop switching specs every fight (53/0/18, 0/41/30) and use my second spec for farming or PVP? Re: Which raiding spec had the best burst damage?
destruction... deep deep destruction. deep demonology is also quite bursty... pop meta and charge + the felguard I think the hybrids 4x/3x (x=0,1) are also not bad, but the above specs should do better. |

Re: Which raiding spec had the best burst damage?
For extremely fast dps once in a while like killing brain tentacles in 10-man Yogg (8k hp each) or cleaning up adds at phase changes with Thorim or Mimiron no spec comes close to a Meta lock and his felguard. The aura, capable of throwing bolts without worrying about dots and a FG cleaving puts low hp targets, and especially multiple targets, down very very fast. If you need burst for a bit longer and burst new adds every 20-30 sec, like Bomb Bots at Mirmiron, destro is the real killer here. Immolate, Conflag and then 3 very fast nukes with CB as the first one hit like a train. Both specs are quite good at switching targets continuously like tunneladds at Thorium or Razorscale P1 trash. Another lock in my guild is Meta and I'm Destro, on some fights I have the advantage, on others he has. Overall we're pretty equal.

Destruction. Even more so if you spec deep into it. Fallenman just put out a 3.1.2 raid spec round up. Have a look at the deep destro build - that's your best friend for burst damage.

i would have to say that the best burst damage seems for me to be the new destruction spec usually hwen i start my rotation i pull be cause i put so much dps up at once i jump from like 0 to 1800 after my rotation and it just keeps going till about 3k+ the only thing about this build is you have to keep on top of your rotation and get it down because its all about timing your cds |

For 20 seconds or so, I would have to say Meta/Ruin has the most burst. When it comes up with Immo Aura, Fel Guard intercept and attack, with Shadow Bolt spam...On training dummies with only self buffs (and possibly several procs from trinkets that have random procs) I have seen over 6K damage that rapidly drops to 4K and continues to slide from there. Its even more effective on multiple targets...Immo Aura and either rain of fire or hellfire = massive burst damage. |
