I think the real message to take away is that the guild who were at one point untouchable and are still doing very well don't just follow cookie cutter. Well no, but I'm getting to it. It's more that you can be that sucessful without following cookie cutter slavishly. Why?

Well it's obvious. Because a good player isn't about following either spec but picking up instead, on the spirit. That is that you apply your intelligence and adjust the build to suit your circumstances. With anything any top player has said, the key is context, and interpreting it intelligently. Adjusting the build and playstyle situationally. COW and COE are NOT never used. That's rubbish. Heroics? Nights where the boomkin doesn't turn up and the DKs are blood? These happen to most guilds. And if you're one it doesn't happen in, gz but then you used your brains and didn't compensate for things you'll always have. I hope. Or blind luck, sometimes it'll be blind luck.

I've been away for a bit too, but this caught my attention.

When you're raiding on the edge or limit of where your gear can take you things like CoW make a difference. In the bulk of raids the gear is well over what is needed and even compensates for a lack of skill in some cases. It's when you're pushing the limits that the little things add up, and besides...you can use CoE on the main target and CoW on the adds or non-main (think Dreadmaw while nuking Acidmaw), your off-tank will thank you for it.

Great posts Buzzkill, always stunning to get a inside view from people that have years of experience on end-game content with such detail. Kudos for that!

After readind this thread, and the awsome posts on it, I decided to put those “survivability” specs against the cookie-cutter, and check using simcraft what kind of DPS loss are we talking here, basicly im using “EJ method” to put some order on the “Ensidia’s method” ;)

Base lines:
  • “Survival” specs with supression specs are not taking into consideration, maybe in a future work.
  • I will try start with the EJ spec (00/13/58), and slowly do my up to Buzzkill’s spec, starting with the talents that I feel more worth to change/more important versus others (this my be controversial, but I will try)
  • I will compare the specs that I created on that path, and compare them against the specs on simcraft atm.
  • Glyphs on all specs were the same: Life Tap, Incinerate, Conflagrate.
  • The gear set used is the one atm on simcraft warlock profiles, wich means, a BiS of Ulduar content (since BiS for T9 is still in a grey area, I decided to use a more or less consensual one) here is the link (Profiler - Wowhead)
  • Any sugestion or correction is most welcome! Feel free to post ;)

Quick Resume of all new specs created:
  • 00/13/58_DR
    • Changed 1 point from Backlash to 2/2 destructive reach, and 2 points from Demonic Embrace to 2/2 Improved Healthstone.
    • Balance: 1% crit and 4% stamina VS 5% threat, plus 3 yards range, 5136 HP Soulwell.
  • 00/14/57_SL
    • Changed 1 point from Backlash to Soul-Link
    • Balance: 1% crit VS 20% damage sharing with pet.
    • Personal note: I liked this spec very much, its like take the best of two worlds.
  • 00/17/54_DE
    • Changed 1 point from Backlash and 2 points from Improved Soul Leech to Demonic Embrace.
    • Balance: 1% crit and 2% mana regen for you and pet VS 10% Stamina.
    • Personal note: Note to this spec, wich also picks Soul Leech Heals, wich are helpfull and should be considered survivability also. Imho, this looks even more “hardcore” than Buzzkill’s one.
  • 00/17/54_Buzz
    • Buzzkill’s spec.
    • Changed 3 points from Soul Leech to 3 points in Backlash.
    • Balance: RNG heal VS 3% crit.
  • 00/15/56
    • Based on 00/14/57_SL, if you dont need to have Improved HS, then you can switch those 2 points to Demonic Embrace, and 1 point form Backlash to Demonic Embrace
    • Balance: 1% crit vs 4% stamina.
    • Personal note: This spec looks really cool, doesnt provide improved HS tou, but if other member of the raid does, then you have a perfect balance between DPS and Survivability.

NOTE: As you noticed, on the main EJ spec, the points i changed 1st were the ones that provided less dps: Backlash. Almost all the scale factors in the web puts crit behind all the other dps stats (hit, spower, haste, spirit even). Even tou this can be a controversial issue, it seemed the better way to do it, while still providing ISL, wich seems core on the EJ spec. Main goal was to build some balanced builds from EJ to Buzzkill’s one, and somewhere in between get a good build with both good dps, and good survivability. Sugestions and corrections are welcome. If you can provide some insight over the backlash/crit rating discussion, please do.

Re: Buzzkill Dest Build

Thank you GreenFeel. But man I wish you had run my Demonology 0/54/17 spec that I stole^H^H^H, ummm...acquired from Hams of Ensidia in that sim. I've been wondering how it would stack up with the demonology builds.

Very nicely done GreenFeel, that gave me something to think about. There obviously are alternatives between raidspec I use and EJ cookiecutter. Will definitely experiment some in our raids and report the findings and my experiences with the alternatives you suggest.

PS: also, if you're interested, I'm working on something atm, and would love a different point of view on raidspecs from someone thats well versed in simcraft use and has your understanding of the class. If you're up for a chat about the project, please contact me on IRC @quakenet, I lurk there as Buzzinsky or Buzzkill or leave me your contact at ensidia.com. Ty.
