List of things to do if you suspect you are being hacked

Well, i was hacked like 2 days ago, im suspecting its due to my anti virus program expiring just the day before, and i did not have the chance to resubscribe it earlier. But just in case any of you guys notice something werid ( especially like being disconnected 3-4 times in a row) things that you should do immediately are these:

1) If possible, alt tab and change password. May or may not help, but something is better then nothing i guess.( the official website claims it may take up to an hour before any password changes are reflected ingame)

2) If you have access to the gbank, call an irl friend to request for immediate demotion. My guild's Gbank got emptied through my hacked character

3) send your gold to a trusted friend

3) Always ensure you know your secret password and that your registered email is up to date.

4) Ask an irl friend to ticket a GM and request for an account freeze. This probably wouldnt help as hackers normally finsh emptying your character in like minutes, but at least the sooner you contact the GMs the higher chance they can help you.

5) Email blizzard using your registered email.

6) Look out on AH, or have a guildie do so, to look out for items stolen. Once you are able to locate the stolen items on AH, ticket a GM and have them investigate. Your case will be much more strengthed and items more likely to be restored if blizzard can have concrete evidence that you were hacked and items sold en masse.

As always, prevention is always better then cure. Always keep your anti virus and hack softwares updated (sigh) and be careful about visting unofficial wow websites. So far, probably the offcial websites as well as this website is safe - i was using WoWhead until recently, but there has been reports of keyloggers in wowhead as well. I would advise only going official website and maybe this website. MMo- champions is another website that i visit regularly, but i havent heard any warnings about it.

Also becareful about what you download. I do download psp games, im not ruling out that the keylogger came from that source though im guessing i got hacked cause of either my protection system expiring, or wowhead, or both.

So be careful.

Good idea on passing the gold to a trusted player. I have several real life friends that would hold it for me.

Also good idea on being demoted in the guild bank.

As far as your gear goes if you are an enchanter they usually dis-enchant your gear and then sell or send the shards to someone. So it may or may not end up on the auction block but still good to keep an eye out.

Something else is use Firefox as your internet browser. I actually removed IE from my machine. If Firefox won't display it I don't want to see the web page. So far on this install I have had FAR fewer problems with pop-ups and etc with Firefox installed! I will be using it the next time I re-install my OS too.

Excellent recommendations. Sorry to hear about you being hacked, that always sucks .

I also use Firefox, I can't stand Internet Explorer. I also use AVG antivirus/spamware software. It is free and has been excellent for me so far.

One thing worth mentioning: change your password frequently, that will help deter hackers. Of course, keeping your antivirus stuff up to date is imperative.

Re: List of things to do if you suspect you are being hacked

Opera 9 + NOD32 + a correctly configured router with all ports you KNOW you aren't using blocked both ways is the way to go. Never used a software firewall, and never will.

Also, on point #1, remember to change your password on another computer, not the one with the keylogger, but that should be a given. If you do it fast enough, essentially it's like you've just given the keylogger a fake/outofdate password and there's nothing they can do with it.

Re: List of things to do if you suspect you are being hacked

encrypt a USB, separate your password onto 2 lines in notepad, enccypt txt file, stick encrypted txt file in USB.

copy and paste password whenever you login.

not really a hassle since it takes a few secs to do everything.

sux you got hacked =/

Re: List of things to do if you suspect you are being hacked

Copying and pasting won't help at all. Even badly written keyloggers can capture copy/paste events. Your safest bet is to obfuscate your input with the aid of the mouse when typing in your password.

I'll give you an easy example. Let's say your password is ~~LOLCAKEs/100-omg

1. Type in: "--"
2. Highlight the second "-" with your mouse, type in "omg"
3. Move the cursor to the beginning of the editbox with the mouse, type "omgzorzLOL"
4. Highlight the "omgzorz" with your mouse and type "~~"
5. Move the cursor to in between th.e "LOL" and "-omg" (in between the 5th and 6th character) with the mouse
6. Type "CAKE FTW"
7. Highlight the " FTW" with the mouse, type "s//1234"
8. Highlight the "/1234" with the mouse, type "100"

Most keyloggers will capture "--omgomgzorzLOL~~CAKE FTWs//1234100", which they can't really do much with. If you change the way you obfuscate it every time, the person reading the logs might see a pattern emerge and eventually figure it out, but they probably won't bother. Also, one important note, do NOT use arrowkeys when doing this, use the MOUSE. Most keyloggers will capture arrow keys for just this reason.

You could try using a combination of arrow keys, copy/pasting and moving the cursor with the mouse, but the key is to make the input the keylogger captures as radically different to your actual password as possible. Of course, you shouldn't get a keylogger in the first place, but if you suspect you have one and you don't know how to remove it, this is the safest approach.

And once again, I REPEAT - do NOT just copy/paste your password, in most cases, this will NOT help at all. Many keyloggers can capture copied/pasted text.

Simplest way to not get hacked -

Quit visiting those shady websites, only use torrent trackers from a reputable source, and stop downloading your email.

Re: List of things to do if you suspect you are being hacked

Hmm thanks all, there were some interesting advise above that i have not heard before, especially from geckothan. If i could find the thank you button i would press it but weridly its not in its usual place...

Anyway, i just resubscribed to an upgraded norton protection systemn with password encryption and added hacker protection (LOL), and will be changing to firefox once i format my computer. Thank you all for the useful advise.

Also, just a note - only wow websites i ever visit are: the official website, mmo - champion, warlocks den and ( used to) wowhead. Any news of whether mmo- champions is safe?I have not heard of anything suspicious about it, but im sort of panarioa now.

cheers

Hi, I tried to open a ticket to the GM for a stolen account of a Guild mate.
The answer from the GM was about : "You can't open an account modification/freeze ticket for a player that's not You. Sorry."

Thinkin about, it's the right choice; Can you immagine what happen if anybody can freeze the account of another player ?

There is people out there, that is able to freeze your account only 'cause you made a bad pull...
