WoW Hacking.. It finally happened to me.

It finally happened, I got hacked. Power Supply went out on my desktop so while I couldn't play WoW I thought I would cruise the official forums and see what everyone is saying about the latest news.

I think it was those pics of the Death Knight at the character creation screen that got me. I have always been so careful not to click wildly there. Monday morning I get up and gmail tells me I had a message from Blizzard about my password being changed ...... My heart drops.

I log on WoW and Im naked and broke. Open a ticket and the GMs are very helpful and in a few hours I have my gear back and still waiting to see if I get my gold and primals back.

Norton and Zone Alarm didnt protect me (not that I thought they would) Spybot didnt see anything on its scan and I even downloaded a few other checkers to see if they could find anything. They didn't. So in the end I reformated and reinstalled windows.

But I still dont feel safe. I got to thinking maybe I didnt update the Flash Player on this one or some other oversight since I dont think about this one being WoW safe.

Anyone got any suggestions for scanner and the like I could run on this laptop to ease my mind?

Lesson learned is ..... Never leave The Den!!

There was a simple backdoor that was found and the authenticator got hacked... Well, sort of. Here's the story. I'm sure this is going to get fixed, but just be aware, we are only as secure as the people securing us. This is a very old trick...

Has there been any actual information on this? WoWInsider did a fabulous FUD job on it, but it was all speculation. Is there any solid information about what happened?

Take a look at How To Beat Keyloggers To Protect Your Identity Raymond.CC Blog for information on Keyloggers.

AntiVirus software is not going to help you.

It kinda sounds like whoever hacked that person's account -- the person who had the authenticator -- may have had access at some time to the physical authenticator.

The authenticator was never removed from the account and when the hacker changed the password they had to provide the serial number of the authenticator, which is only located on the back of the physical device.

Now, the real question is: how did the hacker know that information? Was the hacker someone that knows the person, or is there some other way for the hacker to find out that information? (Or perhaps he already had a keylogger on his system when he registered the authenticator on his account and that is what led to this happening?)

WoW Forums - The Authenticator and the human element

Regardless, it's scary.

Thanks Tzyra, that link had all the info I needed!
Neither the authenticator, nor Blizzard's process failed.

Re: WoW Hacking.. It finally happened to me.

Well, I hope it is an overblown story. I can see it as a possibility though. I apologize for not reading the whole thing. I remember someone told me about it and when it was mentioned here, I just Googled it and posted. Doh! That's what I get for replying from work, I got sidetracked and was in a rush. And to top it off, I still haven't read the whole story.

I'll shut my trap now.

Re: WoW Hacking.. It finally happened to me.

My son's account got hacked a few months ago. He got most everything back, but it was a bit traumatic. He uses our family gaming computer which is a PC. I use a Mac and have never had any of the issues with malware, viruses, etc that we have with our PC. I don't even have virus protection software.

I'm just curious if there are any Mac users out there that have been hacked or had virus, etc. issues?

There are but not to the extent that windows users get hacked. M$ is HATED by a lot of people with the abilities to do malicious things and Mac is not.

In this year CanSecWest's Pwn 2 Own contest a Mac was hacked first before either the Windows Vista or Linux systems, in all of 2 minutes I think it was. It just goes to show when smart people set their sights on breaking into something, no system is safe. (less of course it's not connected to a network and nobody else has physical access to it)

Most anti-virus software does not scan for a lot of things like key loggers, trojans, back doors, spyware...some do scan for a few of these things but sadly most do not. Unfortunately there is no way to know 100% for sure you don't have a key logger. Most are very easily detected but one written at the kernel level is almost invisible.

Also most keylogging software is written to operate on Windows based PC's... It is still possible to get keylogged on a Mac but you have a better chance of not having to deal with it....
