Mana Potion Timer - WotLK

I just noticed this on the PTR. Have no idea if it has been debated before but it was a surprise for me. Its also scary. Mana potion timer only resets after leaving combat, so no more drinking several during boss fights.

The cooldown has been reduced to 1 minute but, really, it only starts after the end of combat so who cares... ill sit down and drink then

Yep, they implemented potion sickness so you can only pot once per fight. It'll save us consumables in the long run. They didn't like the mechanic where healers were forced to pot every cooldown just to make it thru the fight.

Don't forget that you can't sit and drink while in combat either. :(

Healers Pot'd every CD because they had too in order to have enough mana to last the fight and heal. Without it, I am assuming they are jacking up the healers man regen in order to compensate??? If not, won't be many boss fights being won unless you have an extra 10 healers stepping in in the middle.

Yes, they are making healing more powerful to compensate.

Re: Mana Potion Timer - WotLK

It's the same change they made for elixirs/flasks in The Burning Crusade, and it was needed. When encounters are tuned to the highest level, you have to assume there will be people that use EVERYTHING to get an advantage. At The Burning Crusade release, this was flasking and hitting every elixir out there. Essentially people were boosting their gear level by 2 tiers with just consumables, and the encounters were made to handle it. What that meant for everyone else is that they had to do the same thing if they wanted a chance at beating a boss.

This is essentially the same thing. Right now I drink mana pots like candy on progression, because healers shouldn't be watching me, and pushing as much DPS as possible is hugely important. Come wrath, pots will be much more of an "Oh Shit" cooldown to hit during a fight, and the emphasis will move to player skill and managing mana usage in the long run.

(side note)
...which is the EXACT opposite of what the max-rank-only change is doing to healing by making it all one-button spam, so it means they are just going to have to tune to specific class regen, which means there is no longer any skill needed in the game. Here's hoping this doesn't end up being the case.

Re: Mana Potion Timer - WotLK

Down-ranking was a pain, if not an over-sight in design. I admit it led to some rather creative applications, but it was never an intended mechanism. One could say totem-twisting showed skill, but it was an un-intended effect.

Down-ranking became so important that there were some spells rarely worth using the maximum rank. On some it was due to mana efficiency (chain heal), on some it was due to fundamentally poor mana return for the class (holy shield and consecration).

Resurrection was the same. Nobody uses max rank resurrection after a wipe. Those higher ranks existed for no practical purpose at all. I have long held a secret gripe about this, because warlocks are never high on the resurrection list (unless the healer was a good friend), and buffers never wait for warlocks to re-summon minions before buffing, so my minions rarely gets the buffs they need.

It's hard to say what this means for us. I also down pots every cool-down in boss fights, but I don't like that. So I welcome this change.
