Re: A conspicious lack of a CD drive...

I wonder when the first game will be released on USB-drive only. Would save a lot of box-space .

As for the original poster, try the paperclip hole first. Not many people nowadays know of it (my brother is a certified IT professional and didn't knew it ) but it's a very effective way to open cd/dvd drives which refuse to open any other way.

If that fails you could look around on pirate bay or mininova this weekend. I know some retailers already have boxes so the first torrents should be up this weekend.

maybe your drive's power plug is not attached in the drive?
buy a dvd drive, and after installing WLK, just return it

Re: A conspicious lack of a CD drive...

Torrents + Viruses are pretty much non-existent unless you go for dodgy public trackers with thousands of seeds/leechers but no comments verifying the contents. Then it's just mega fail lol.

Blizzard's downloader works via the Bit Torrent principle anyway and since you need an account to play the game, I doubt they will mind people downloading a copy.

You can either get it off the torrents, or if you have a friend that has the DVD, get him to make an Image of it and send it over to you via USB/Hard drive.

Edit: Heh, there's even a mention of Wrath of the Lich King possibly being available for download according to one of the European German GMs. You can read about it at MMO-Champion. If its so, this will basically be the torrent you want to jump on. Blizzard's servers should be able to give it a decent speed.

I dont know where you live but a 500 gigabyte hard drive is about $100 in the US. Mine just went to the great hard drive resting place in the sky after about 3 months GRRR!!

I would suggest just getting a new DVD drive/burner. And I would suggest to everyone who dont to back up WoW to multiple sources so you dont have to worry about a crash of one backup method ... Thanks to good lord that I am anal about it with WoW.

If I had to patch from day 1 again, Id have to rent a hotel room to update or just quit with my connection.

Don't bother taking the torrent route unless it's from a private tracker that only approves quality/legit material. Honestly, the easiest route would just be to replace your CD drive. Don't waste your money getting a USB drive, pull that old CD drive out and stick in a new DVD drive, problem solved. If that's too hard for you, get a friend who can do it. You don't need to buy a new computer to replace a busted drive, it's a 2 minute job depending on how messy/cramped your case is.

Pull out power + SATA (or ATA if you're living in the stoneage) cables, undo 8 screws, pull out drive, slide in new one, put said screws back in, put said cables back in -> profit. Couldn't be easier.

to be honest, if you're going to blow $70 for a mere 32GB of storage, you could also get a 500GB external USB storage drive for about $20-30 more. $30 more for nearly 20x the capacity is a good deal.

in addition...

1) you should be able to find someone to open your CD drive. take it to your local PC repair shop, they'll probably do it for free

2) if its a PC as opposed to a laptop, and if it is in fact a CD drive, you can buy a DVDR that not only reads but can also write DVDs for about $30-40. Installation is another issue, but certainly not too expensive.

I agree with Geckothan; assuming your computer isn't a notebook or some weird proprietary thing that's set up weird (I had a "slim" Sony Vaio once, and the non-standardness of it made it impossible for me to upgrade), you can open up your computer, unscrew the current CD drive, unplug the power and the IDE (Aka ATA) or SATA cable to it, and pop in a new, working DVD drive. Sucks to have to buy a DVD drive for Wrath, but in the end you'll get a DVD drive that works.

Before you buy the DVD drive, if you do this, open your computer to see if the old is IDE or SATA. IDE has a wide usually gray ribbon connecting to the CD drive. SATA has a much slimmer connector. Then make sure the DVD drive you purchase has the correct connector.

Alternately, there *are* external DVD drives that hook up via USB. Wouldn't have to crack open your computer to do that.

Re: A conspicious lack of a CD drive...

I would not recommend downloading from a torrent as it is not the official release and can contain anything from:

-Keyloggers
-non-official patches [code patches not game ones]
-virii/trojans

You can get away with virii/trojans etc with a good virus scanner but non official patching will lead to account shutdown - happened to a guildie when he down'ed the 3.02 patch from a torrent.

Check your drive's power cable and IDE cable. If its not working, you can either replace it for about 20€ or:

buy the original, and go to a guildie's house or somone you know that plays WoW, install it, and get all files to an external HD. Copy them to your drive and youre set to go. WoW clients don't need 'proper' installation to work. Make sure your friend has the latest patches and has the original and The Burning Crusade x-pac.

Re: A conspicious lack of a CD drive...

I think everyone has everything covered. Just one additional thing to note:

If you attempt to install from a networked machine, you may need to setup the other drive as a network drive, not just a shared drive on the network. You can do this by doing the following...

1) Share the drive on the network on the second computer
2) On the first computer, right click on My Computer and go to Map Network Drive
3) Navigate to the shared drive on the network, assign it a letter, and your done

I'm not sure if this will be an issue given that it's a single disc install, but I ran into issues installing WoW on a laptop across the network. You could run the installer on this first disc, but it couldn't find the second disc when it was required.
