WotLK Shatters Day-1 Sales Record

IRVINE, Calif. - November 20, 2008 - Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft®'s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King™, has sold more than 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability*, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time. This eclipses the previous record of nearly 2.4 million copies sold in 24 hours, set in January 2007 by Blizzard's first World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade®. Wrath of the Lich King was simultaneously released in North America, Europe, Chile, Argentina, and Russia on November 13; Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand on November 14; and South Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on November 18.

In celebration of the launch, more than 15,000 stores throughout the world had their doors open at midnight to welcome thousands of expectant players. Several of these locations were attended by Blizzard Entertainment representatives, who met players and signed copies of the game.

"We're grateful for the incredible support that players around the world have continued to show for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “Wrath of the Lich King contains some of the best content we’ve created for the game so far, and we look forward to seeing even more players log in to experience it in the days ahead."

"After a single day of availability, Wrath of the Lich King is already the bestselling PC game of 2008 at GameStop and ranks as one of our top-selling products so far this year," said Bob McKenzie, GameStop’s senior vice president of merchandising. "In keeping with the tradition established by their previous releases, Blizzard Entertainment has again created a product that not only reflects their high standards of quality but is clearly an instant hit with gamers around the country."

Prior to the launch of Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft’s subscriber population had grown to more than 11 million players, further strengthening its position as the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game. More information about the new expansion can be found at the official Wrath of the Lich King website: www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath.

Amazing

And they're not lieing about some of their best content. Everything is just a slightly bit warped from the previous expansions. It's fun but a lot of people don't even realise what they're doing ingame till someone points it out. From robbing dead heroes, sacrificing people to gods to even straight out play an undead and commit genocide on a camp of trolls. A lot of the quests are darker and more twisted then in previous expansions, but it's done very subtly.
You even get to help the bad guy on his path to evil for crying out loud !

I agree that the content is very, very good. The quests became more clever and more varied, they found ways to suck people into lore who didn't pay much attention to lore before with cool cut scenes and instanced areas and quests. And yes, it also became very dark, and rather twisted in places. At one point I had to equip red hot pokers on a character so I could torture someone for info. On a more funny-gross angle...ever hear the ground shake when in Amberpine in Grizzly Hills (you ally folk)? There's a quest that requires you to take a gigantic dump in an outhouse. And yes, it makes the ground shake as if a storm giant is passing by whenever someone is in that outhouse completing the quest. Me, when I was doing the quest: "Uh...you can't be serious...can you?"

Indeed the content is brilliant, i just wish the original WoW was as good as this (I would actually look forward to leveling then.. well.. maybe). That would require a major re-vamp though so it's probally a no-go .

Anyone looking forward to Emerald Dream? huh? huh?!

They've made a few fixes to the original WoW (Dustwallow Marsh, for instance).

I think we'll see some trickle-down into old-world, but probably not a lot as most people shoot straight to Outlands as fast as possible.

I've also heard rumors (sorry, no links) that Blizzard wants to refresh WoW so that it looks like it came out in 2008 instead of 2004.

So, maybe they will dress up the old world a bit more.
