Zone Progression

Here's what I did as a Human Warlock:

1-8: Abby (Starting Zone)
8-11: Goldenshire + A few quests east of Goldenshire that you get from the guard at the bridge
12-15: Westwall, did all I could solo there. Hate Westwall, just don't like the zone. Way over crowded.
15-20: Loch Mordan (IronForge, then east to Loch Mordan). Had a lot of fun in this zone, good quests, good rewards, easy to solo except for the Ogres. Not over crowded at all.
20-25: Lakeshire. Went through these levels easily enough.
25-30: Duskwood! The best zone I have played yet in the game. A lot of fun, great atmosphere, storyline, excitement, etc. While this zone had a lot of players it was never overcrowded, always easy to find a group for the few quests that needed them.
30-35: Right now, I have found that Southshore is a very good zone for these levels. I looked into Stranglethorn Vale, that seems more upper 30's. Tried Arathi Highlands and that seemed a little above me yet too. Flying through quests now in Southshore with good rewards to boot.
33-36: Desolace. Great zone. Easy cents and daemons. Make some nice cash here as well as items (I found a blue necklace with +4 to all stats!)
35-40: A combination of Strangethorn Vale and the Badlands.

There's a decent writeup there. Somewhat rogue-centric, but the zone info is good.

Zone Progression

Personally, I started in Dun Morogh 1-10 (I'm a gnome!). Moved to Loch Modan for 10-18,19... began zone jumping during this time. Westfall has a fair amount of teen level quests, however the big one there is Van Cleef, which is next to impossible without a good group of at least level 20ish characters.

A buddy of mine and I ventured through the Wetlands to Menethil Harbor, and over to Darkshore at level 12. We wanted to hang out with the night elf ladies lol. Ended up getting lots of quests there and in Ashenvale a bit later on. Quest log was always full, hopping between night-elf land, westfall, and loch modan.

At 20, I spent a lot of time in Ashenvale. Quests began sending me to lands with more Horde on them, such as Stranglethorn Mountains and the Barrens (the latter for pet quest). I also spent a good bit of time in Redridge Mountains, Wetlands, and as I hit higher level 20s, moved into Duskwood.

When I hit 30, I ended up going to Desolace b/c of a quest. Picked up plenty to do there in Nigel Pointe, and spent a majority of my early 30s grinding away at the lower 30s level centaurs, scorpions, and such. Also headed to Southshore for a quest, and picked up a good bit of stuff to do there. I spent nearly all of my 30s between Arathi/Hillsbrad and Desolace.

Now I'm level 42 and spending some time between the Badlands, Stranglethorn Vale (southern end, mostly grinding for mageweave as I am a tailor. Also enjoy going into Booty Bay and picking on Horde), and the Hinterlands.

Nothing at all wrong with zone hopping. I've never once found myself without quests to do, or wondering where to go next. The world is there to explore. Some places are really well drawn and are a lot of fun to be in. Now that I have my felsteed, all sorts of new areas are being explored Sure is easy to reveal a map with a horse.

I hate the Barrens!

So much running to get anywhere there. Give me a nice small zone like Silverpine any day.
I like Silverpine too, but sometimes it is a major pain. The storyline is great (the best chained storyline I have seen yet) and the quests are good, but more than a couple require at least a duo or group. Every quest is chained, if I recall correctly, so grouping is sometimes difficult. Being in a guild or getting a group together before going to Silverpine is probably the best way to work through Silverpine. There are quite a bit of solo quests, but IMO Silverpine is best done with a group and a few hours.

The barrens is great, just ignore all quests beside the ones involving the pools (leads to the quest "leaders of the fang") and just grind the mobs, much faster lvling and you dont lose time running around the place.

Or if you dont like grinding just grab all quests you can and then do them in bunches so that you do as many as possible at the same time.

I just did the majority of Darkshore with my Dwarf Hunter and I liked that zone more than either Loch Modan or Westfall. Lots of quests and lots of others in the area for grouping. Distances don't seem to bother me so much after spending all that time in The Barrens
