Re: Poll: Chinese ban gold farming, good or bad?

Hello, this is my fist post.

As for me I find it cheesy buying virtual gold. however, considering all the mindless grinding I've done for it I can certainly understand why some people would want to take a shortcut.

However, if Blizzard really wanted to cut down on gold sellers they'd sell gold themselves and make even more bank.

I have a suspicion that the only reason Blizzard doesn't legalise gold selling by doing it themselves is due to the fact that they would get slammed for doing so. They make enough money from it being outlawed through gold farmers buying multiple copies of the game and still get to be regarded as having 'good gaming morals' by idiots who think money is not equal to time.

In the business world, time is money and money is time. If you don't have time, spend money. If you don't have money, spend time.

However, money can't buy you skill and certainly doesn't guarantee fun or success. So you could have the most gold on your server but be a terrible player who can't do anything because you haven't spent the time to learn and get to know the game.

EDIT: One other quick thing to note is that the poll is quite biased in its wording. I don't have a problem with that as long as you realise that it is.

I don't mind the gold farmers really. I stay at home and farm my gold where my mate works all day and doesn't have time, so he buys it with his money he made working... I don't see the problem personally, if anything its inflating the market making my items worth MORE not less.

I agree with what you are saying. Unfortunately, the gold buyers have an advantage over those of us who "earn" our money, so to speak. While they may not know how to play their class, they will still get their mounts faster, will have better gear which will get them into raids before me, and can do other stuff besides try to make gold.

Yes, that was the point.

Re: Poll: Chinese ban gold farming, good or bad?

So what you actually dislike, is the person who is playing his/her first toon, levels it to 80 and buys gold to get AH BoE's and mounts without "earning" it.

Because anything other than that would be someone leveling to 80, have his main toon skip some gold off to his new level 80 alt to buy BoE's and mounts...because he/she has put in the "earning" time as the person behind the keyboard.

As well, the person who levels his toon to 80 should have a fairly good working knowledge of the class, despite whether he/she gets an epic flyer and BoE epics by purchasing gold, so that doesn't really fit when people say someone who buys gold doesn't know their class mechanics.

That is a power leveling issue.

There could be issues with raid dynamics as a person who levelled their toon without going into an instance, bought some BoE's epics and blues and totally sucked.

However, that is not an issue regarding gold purchasing in an absolute sense, since that happens all the time with peoples alts (and they suck), whether they purchased gold, or just sent it from their main.

I don't buy gold, but I think about it FREQUENTLY as a multiboxer on numerous servers with hilarious mount costs, while I'm earning it the legit way

Good topic Roma

In theory, I dislike that anyone would buy gold. Regardless of how they leveled or how many toons they have, buying gold is the "easy" way of buying things in-game without earning them imho. For example, someone who just starts playing, buys gold at level 8, and levels their toon would have a significant advantage because of the money they already possess. This would be evident in their gear and mounts. The first dungeon I ever ran was Gnomeregan. My gear was awful. Let's be honest, the quest reward gear before Outland is not good. This means that when I see someone at level 25 with all blues, I know one of three things: they bought gold which allows them to buy that gear on the AH, they are a twink toon (these could be funded any number of ways), or they actually earned that gear by being run through instances, crafting, or some other form of help without buying gold. I do not know for sure who buys gold and who doesn't, but I would bet in most cases the toons with all epics (or even blues) that are not even to Outland yet bought gold. My reasoning for this is simple: Who would bother gearing up before Outland and/or Northrend? It is a waste of time because Outland rewards are significantly better than anything in pre-BC. It stands to reason that these people bought gold to get the best gear they could get without understanding the better rewards available to them in BC. Perhaps this is a generalization on my part, but I prefer to call it deductive reasoning. It is also noticeable when these same people have no clue what they are doing in 5-mans later on.

In the end, buying gold is a personal choice, albeit one I don't agree with. I think it takes away from the mystique of playing a character and earning rewards, such as gear, mounts, and titles. It also takes away from the need to experience the game, such as running instances and doing low-level PvP (no twinking).

At least I created an interesting discussion, eh?

Re: Poll: Chinese ban gold farming, good or bad?

Blizzard is addressing some of the issues, albeit in a small way at the moment.

Think in terms of Bind on Account items, where a veteran toon (for lack of a better term) can send a junior toon a piece of gear the junior toon didn't work for.

This to me indicates Blizzard is acknowledging that the piece of gear has been earned in an acceptable manner, by the person behind the keyboard.

I disagree. I bought my new toon all AH blues prior to making it out to Outlands for the speed of leveling. That is the same reason I also equipped the toon with BoA (heirloom) items. Gold was mailed from my main to this new alt.

I did level a warlock to 80 and she is my main, I loved it! I also leveled a paladin to 80, liked it, but it was more tedious. I don't see the point of leveling a character from 1 to 80 once you have done it on that account.

To that end I have considered buying an account. I'd like to play a level 80 warrior or rogue or shaman, without the leveling time commitment. But its against the EULA, so I do not.

Ok, but in all honesty, does all blues REALLY help you level that much faster? I would think it does not, especially with the way Blizzard has made leveling so much easier and faster in the past year or so. Now, if you are working for the gold (via professions, dailies, questing, etc.) and send the money to an alt, that is fine with me. It is when people buy gold and do this, without ever seeing any of the content or learning how to play their toon before having great gear, that I become annoyed.

This is where I say QQ. If leveling an alt is tedious, why do it? I have a 70 rogue, 70 hunter, 72 DK, and my 'lock. I will probably never level them all to 80 before I quit playing WoW, but the idea of buying gold for them to make the process faster has never crossed my mind. Maybe I am just in the minority...?

Yes, in all honesty some blues mixed into the standard drop greenies (along with several selected enchants performed by my 80 warlock) really do help with the leveling grind. I'm in the middle of leveling a priest (currently at 56) and saw a noticeable improvement in dps & surviveability when I threw on some +stam and +sp enchants (along with the heritage gear). I had started the priest over a year ago, got him to 25 and just quit because it was so freaking hard to level a priest solo (I very seldom get into groups or raids etc). Now he's just cruising through the levels and even taking down same-level elites (something I never ever managed on my lock while leveling).

It's kind of the same idea as a 19 twink. Given excellent gear and proper enchants you can mow through stacks of non-twinked players. It really does make that much difference.

And my thoughts on gold farmers - if it were all "honest" farmers grinding gold and selling it I'd have no serious problems, although the trade spam is annoying. But it's not limited to that kind of activity - there's enough potential profit to attract the scum-sucking keylogger-wielding account theives who simply take one person's gold and sell it to someone else.

Unlike one previous poster, I'm quite good at the "AH game" and have never had to grind for gold (at least, in the traditional sense of the word - I still spend hours "working" for my gold) so for me there's zero reason to buy gold.
