Re: WoW forums changing

12:30pm PST and that thread is still growing faster than you can read it. There is roughly one post in favor of the change (or just calling everyone paranoid) every 2 pages or so. That means we're passing 17,000 posts against (just on the first day). I think it's fair to say that nobody is interested in seeing this change go live.

I'm not normally a doomsayer, but honestly? I don't doubt for a second that they'll lose a substantial group of players over this issue. If nothing else, the forums will become worse than ever, as anyone who has $10 for a vanilla box can make an account with an alias and troll away.

So far the biggest arguments against it are:

"I'm concerned about Identity theft, and don't wish to ever use my name in public on the internet."
"I might get passed up for a position/promotion because an employer googles my name and discovers that I play WoW."
"Who is going to stop all the kids from posting with their real names? Who will educate the parents about this?"
"I'm female and never share my real name online because I don't want to be stalked"
"I'm worried that people will find me IRL and retaliate for something that happened in game."

The people with these concerns are really not going to post any more. This includes CMs, and probably a few of the blues who just quit the company.

Probably the most important feed back for blizzard is money.
Watch this space.

P.S. Just something to think about: A real name attached to a traceroute. Yea...

P.P.S. Blizzard asked Bashiok (blue poster) to give his real name to show that there's no harm in what's happening. Immediately people started posting information about him, such as his address, phone number, family members' names, etc. He's since deleted all his posts and his Facebook account, and his phones have been disconnected. People have been showing up at his residence, and the residences of friends and family, among other things.

Scary

Personally, I could care less. If you don't like the idea, don't post on the Official forums. It doesn't effect the game itself... And no, this doesn't mean I'll be posting there, in fact this is just one more reason why I'll never post on the Official forums.

However, it amuses me that nearly every post is about how Blizz is freely given out all of your personal information and how it will ruin the game... WTF, get a clue.
I have to disagree with you. The forums are a real part of the game. It's not the forum about Tetris or Invaders :p People, me included, create events through the wow forums, recruit for their guilds, discuss aspects of the game that concern them. It's a usefull tool if you know how to handle it.

I've seen the Bashiok thing last night, but did people really start harrassing him??? lol Blizzard already getting a piece of what's to come

Re: WoW forums changing

^this.

Guild recruitment, Customer Service, Realm Forums... We do a lot on the official forums. It's not really mandatory, but neither is World of Warcraft as a whole.

And yea, unless it's just a rumor that's getting out of control, people have been harassing poor Bashiok since he posted his name. I don't think it's funny at all. Ironic, maybe, but that guy is a real person who (if this is true) is probably scared sh!tless for his wife and kids.

Screen shot or it didn't happen?

I find this hard to believe actually. This announcement is a little less than 24 hours old at this time and you are telling me based on a First and last name some guys relatives have been visited? I might buy the phone call bit, maybe.

Much of the concern is waaaaaaay overblown. But the "my boss might find out I play wow" argument is bullcrap. All my bosses know I play World of Warcraft, several of them play too. It is an activity you do in your spare time which is neither illegal nor immoral. Why would you be passed up for promotion based on your hobby?

Where are you getting your info on this? I can't seem to find anything anywhere about this happening.

I don't overall agree with this change, BUT, it wouldn't hurt some of these younger folks (trolls, ninja's, etc.) to learn that there can be consequences for your actions online or offline. However, taking that point of view leads me to this: how long before someone gets tracked down via facebook, myspace, etc. and gets killed over WoW? I promise you it will happen.

I saw this video a few days ago before this real name on forums stuff was announced, and I laughed a little at it then. Now people like this may get what they need to really make good on threats. Lots of NSFW stuff here.

In this situation, just jog slowly forward wait for fattie to catch up, jog slowly forward, wait for fattie to catch up, jog slowly forward, wait for fattie to catch up, jog slowly forward, wait for fattie to catch up....at this point he will be near death. Now call the cops and they can come arrest him for attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and they won't even have to work hard to catch him, he should be collapsed in a neat pile on the ground beside you wheezing for air.

Re: WoW forums changing

RealID makes it highly unlikely I will ever post on the official WoW Forums. I do not use Facebook, MySpace, Twitter or any other social networking site... why would I want to add social networking to my WoW life? Online is where I go to escape friends and family... it's a haven and I do not want that haven invaded. If I were to vent why would I want my children to be able to find it one day? Anonymity is not a bad thing... neither is accountability. Blizzard should be able to find a way to add accountability without stripping their clients of their anonymity.

Just a thought,
Kalium
