Here's a crazy idea for Blizzard...Classic Wow: set up a few servers running old Wow versions. Each release (vanilla, BC, Wrath etc) would be running the last good working version. Think that Vanilla was best? Well you can go back and play it.

You'd obviously need a seperate install for each version and there'd be no character transfers in/out. Probably many other technical considerations, but what do you think?

Re: Classic Wow

You're the first person to ever think of this!

But seriously.... There are already private servers that allow people to play original WoW. People play them for a short while and then get bored and go play the new content on live servers. Classic WoW is not that fun in 2012, it's just a lot of grinding.

Blizzard has said they will never do this. Why would you want them to spend time and money running Classic servers when they could be spending time and money on current and future content? And then why stop at Classic? Why not a BC server? Why not a Wrath server? And a Cata one once MoP comes out? They can't just flip a switch and make a Vanilla server, or reverse patch changes, that's not how their systems are set up internally. Blizzard doesn't need that logistical and infrastructure headache.

Re: Classic Wow

The main appeal about vanilla was its novelty. ie its newness.

Once something becomes commonplace it loses its almost clandestine appeal.
Almost like the old CB radio. (if you are old enough to remember)

In Vanilla people had to work most things out for themselves. not much addons, little in the way of maps etc. loads of hours in pvp just to retain rank or level.
And a camaraderie between players trying to discover new things or make it work.

Nowadays its as old as the phrase "been there, done that, got the T-shirt".

You may be able to recreate the server structure, but you can't turn the clock back to regain that *magic* sadly.

Re: Classic Wow

this is a great idea, but they will never do it (people would not pay for the following expansions if they could play on a $old_expansion server). blizz said there's no interest in older servers... and yep, it's a lie. I admit: I have been playing on an unofficial The Burning Crusade server for some time (to each his own, I'm having more fun here) and i can say there are a few thousands players online constantly. Unofficial servers are the only way to play older expansions.

EQ did something like this awhile ago. The called them progression servers. The original game was the first. They made it as much like the original as possible. They made changes to loot tables to remove as much as possible of later expansions. There were changes they couldn't take out or you would never want them to take out. As certain server content was finished then peoplel voted whether to open the next expansion or not. Was it a success? Kind of but I can tell you it wasn't much fun.

WoW would be much more difficult. The classes in EQ never underwent the kinds of changes wow classes have seen.

That would not be fun for those of us that remeber what it was like to run everywhere until level 40 to get a slow mount. Then ride that slow Fel stead until 60 to get a faster one. No flying. I would not do that again.

The class quests would be a good thing, you have to do something after getting to 60. Dire Maul Dreadstead chain for one.

Re: Classic Wow

Vanilla was a great game for its time, there's no doubt about that. It had many perks, but it also had a lot of flaws, many of those are easy to forget. There was no soulwell or mage table, food and cookies were handed out individually. 40 man raids were epic, but had a lot of issues. It took ages to put together and get everyone ready to go and if you were missing a tank then god help you. Resistance gear took a lot of gold and effort to get and was required for a lot of the fights. Class balance was non-existant and the world was very much looked at through the eyes of a child. The playerbase was not very educated and few people had a good understanding of their class.

If you were to put todays players back in vanilla you wouldn't suddenly find that lost magic, that is gone. The players today are far more capable and have much greater knowledge and fights that were a huge challenge in vanilla would be steamrolled through with todays players. Most bosses had a couple of mechanics and that was pretty much it, but they were challenging because players didn't have 7 years worth of practise learning and beating raid bosses. If you were to roll the servers back to vanilla the class imbalance would be even more glaring, players would do far more damage, heal far better and be much more coordinated than they were back then, even if given the same tools.

That combined with the fact that vanilla just didn't have that much content. There were 3 battlegrounds, MC, BWL, AQ and Naxxramas as well as some dungeons. How long are you going to run those before you're bored again? No arenas, no new content EVER, a mere shadow of the concept of balance and what would quickly be deserted servers.

Vanilla was great for what it was back then, attempting to revive it would just disgrace the memory of it.
