Why Shards Should Be Removed - An Argument By Mosh

this "don't argue about it, it's not going to happen" is just wrong to say imo

fundamental changes have been done to previous MMORPGs.
in EQ, spells did not crit ever, Aradune claimed it to be overpowered (he was incredibly clueless back then ;) ). Now they do.

Many "this is never going to happen" things happened. Soul Shards could bite it too.

Scattershot enables that FD/Trap to work more frequently. Also helps with the "Dead Zone" issue. Luckily Caydiem said the Devs are looking at revamping the Survival Tree and the "Dead Zone". We'll see.

Why Shards Should Be Removed - An Argument By Mosh

I have a thread along similar lines to this on the US forums, very little has been said with solid reasoning why shards are needed in addition to mana cost/cooldowns etc.

I firmly believe they should be removed, regardless of whether anyone thinks it will happen or not. If you feel something is wrong then surely that's the way you feel about it.

They never will get rid of Shards

Unfortunately some high-up Exec. back in alpha or w/e thought it was a cool idea. You know what happens when execs. come up with "cool" ideas? They stay.

The thing is it is not really a big prob until you hit 60 and your focus shifts from levelling to more enjoyable activites. Then the shard requirement bites you on the behind. *yawn* What a chore.

How about a compromise?

Guys, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. There are a BILLION things that Blizzard can do to alleviate this obviously widespread problem (and make no mistake, it IS a problem.)

How about making the concept of shards a bit more abstract? That way, the "lore" will be maintained, but we'll have to much more fun and enjoyable experience as warlocks.

For example, why not do away with actual shards altogether, and instead implement a DP (Demonic Power) meter that would fit snugly below the mana bar? Using shard-required abilities would take up a certain amount of DP and, in the cases, of summons or Shadow Burn, the requisite amount of mana as well. Using Drain Soul, could then be made to slowly replenish the DP meter AS IT IS BEING CHANNELED. And why not make the amount of DP acquired with Drain Soul dependent on the level of the monster killed? Lower level monsters can give you less overall DP than, say, elites, or enemies that are at or above your current level. This would also open up all kinds of oppurtunities for additional talents.

Or better yet, how about this: implement a DP BAR with "ticks" that can be displayed below the mana bar. Each tick represents one soul shard. Using Drain Soul would increase the bar by one "tick" and using an ability requiring a soul shard could decrease the bar by one "tick". They can make the maximum number of "ticks" in your DP Bar equivalent to the total number of slots in your inventory, or a percentage thereof. That would allow the incentive to buy bigger bags to remain, because we'd always want to have the highest maximum DP "ticks" possible. This would also make it easy for blizzard to, say, make the DP Bar regenerative. Maybe make it so that it regenerates one "tick" on the bar every half hour or hour, for example.

Or they can go with any number of other solutions posted here. The bottom line is that the soul shard system as it stands was a good idea in the beginning, but the mechanics of it simply make for cumbersome and unnecessarily tedious and repetitive gameplay that no other class has to put up with.

Maybe they got so wrapped up in trying to make the Warlock class DISTINCTIVE and not just a "mage clone" that they lost sight of the practicality that such a system was sacrificing. It's not necessary I say. You can still have a soul shard system that is fun and rewarding to use.

Warlocks forever.

Some of these good ideas are great and all but should be posted in the Blizzard Feedback Forum. Maybe a few of you have but I have heard tales of some changes that came from feedback given on their official forum. I am not saying that ideas thrown around here are all going to be ignored, however, the odds of a suggestion getting implemented is better on the feedback forum.
