Highs and lows on a warlock's life

Hi fellow warlocks.

I'm currently a level 36 'lock on a PvP server, and I've been experiencing some sort of "change" in my life lately. I've been ganked many many times in my early levels, by all classes and in many situations, but lately I seem capable of defeating almost every ally that comes my way, even while fighting a mob at the same time. Sometimes I get amazed at the outcome of the battle: yesterday I killed a hunter one level higher, being ambushed by him and starting my couterattack at half life and mana... almost felt too easy. Same happened with a gnome mage, dwarf shadowpriest, dwarf warrior... I would like to see their faces as I'm sure they thought "he's mine" at some point during these battles.

Now the question is: Are we 'locks more powerful in some level ranges than others? Seems like from the 10's and 20's to the 30's, we evolve from "punching bag" form to "unstoppable killer" form... Is it my perception, or is this true?

Re: Highs and lows on a warlock's life

Might be just you. I've experienced the exact opposite.

Up till about level 30 or so I was nigh unstoppable in 1 vs 1 or even 1 vs 2 I stood a fairly good chance of winning. From 30 onward it's become harder and harder to kill people and PvE taking longer to kill a mob with more downtime.. I expect another strong increase in power at level 40 which I just dinged about... 3 minutes ago.

But I consider the 30s a rough patch in a warlock's life.

Perhaps if you two compare builds, we might see why this flux in you PvP powers is happening. My guess is that DiabloSP is affliction. <---  I am biased ol

Re: Highs and lows on a warlock's life

I found that everything started to change for me around level 35 as well. It's like the game all of a sudden got easier. I think it was a combination of finally having enough gold to get good gear, finally getting to the point where the talent points make a serious difference, and it seems that the spells ramp up their power at this point. Add to the mix that you start getting decent gear at this point and you really start to get really powerful.

I'm currently level 44 with a 23/0/12 build (on my way to SM/Ruin) and just hit Senior Sergeant (rank 4) on my server. Not great, but not bad when you consider that I only play about 10-12 hours a week.

If you think you're powerful now, wait until you get deathcoil.

Re: Highs and lows on a warlock's life

To clarify...

My build now is All-demonology plus insta-corruption. Gear is typical AH greens, mostly "of the Eagle" stats so nothing fancy. I am speculating that Evilhackermight be right: talents now make a difference and the power to double or triple your life bar with the demo build might be the reason. 1300 hp, plus 1000hp from void sacrifice, plus 500 from healthstone, plus another possible 1000 from the second voidwalker... well that is simply a lot of HP to chew at level 35. At lower levels we don't have that kind of shields, we cannot insta-summon a second pet, and healthstones are a bit weaker... might be it. Wonder what kind of survability we have with soul link... phew!

DiabloSP - you are running with the same build I levelled with. You are in for some good times, as my experience is that your build only gets better and better from there all the way up to Soul Link.

I am a huge fan of the MD buffs, and they should start kicking in for you shortly.

I'd be the one with full affliction.

Re: Highs and lows on a warlock's life

Life greatly improves for demonology warlocks the further you go into the talent tree. Fel domination lets you pop the appropriate pet to deal with a ganker, improved succubus lets you seduce one ganker while defeating the second, master demenology and soul link make life much easier too. Most of those talents are gained in the level 38 to 45 range.

Wow nfef. I am affliction and I am over all pretty stonrg in PvP. I concentrate mostly on +dam gear and stam. Pretty equal in both. My only advice would be that fear is your friend. While many people have the fear trincket, at least in the battle grounds, you can use that cooldown to your favor. I am on a PvE server so gankers arent a problem for me. Also, do you use curse of exhaustion, or Curse of Agony on melees? I personally have not speced into curse of exhaustion, and mostly just amp a Curse of Agony when I am dueling or fighting a tank 1v1.

Usually amped CoE, considering i'm specced that way so it puts them at 65% move speed. I'm pretty sure most of my issues just stem from lack of PvP experience with the class. More focused on hitting 60 as fast as possible, not to mention getting a mid-level BG on my server during my playtimes is pretty impossible.
