Re: Am I crazy or just stupid?

I switched to afliction/destro shortly after hitting 70...maybe a month ago and in the last week just busted +900dmg with my fel armor and havent touched a raid or heroic.

Once you get your DoT, Dark pact and life tap routine figured out its so much fun to farm and instance. Its funny to watch the competion leave when they see you taging up 4-5 mobs in a high trafic farm spot over and over again.

I experienced this a few times today and last night while grinding in Felwood, both for the timbermaw rep, as well as for felcloth. I was grabbing 3-5 mobs at a time routinely and other players, horde included (I'm alliance), would "help" me. After the fight I would explain what I was doing. I went about my business knocking them in groups and watched the hunters, paladins and warriors go 1 on 1 and not finish those mobs much quicker than I would finish 3 or 4. My wife, who got me into WoW (I know, aren't I lucky?) watched me this morning and laughed. She constantly tells me that warlocks are overpowered.

I continued the drain tanking wit my passive imp through the Jaedenar caves as well, even though that was a lot of 1 on 1. I found that the occasional add could still be easily dealt with and my health rarely dropped below 80%, unless I chose to lifetap instead of dark pact. I have the same issue as Erosion in that I hate to be draining life when I'm already 100% health. It feels too inefficient.

One drawback I have noticed in drain tanking that no one has mentioned, and maybe it's just because we're cloth wearers and our gear is cheap, but without a tank I notice my items durability goes down much quicker. Granted it probably would only cost me 2g to repair from 0 durability right now, and sure, one piece of felcloth on a drop makes up for that (and I got 3 this morning), but it's still something to keep an eye on.

I leveled to 53 this morning and, after reading many other posts here, chose to put my talent point into shadow embrace before putting anything into grim reach. 5% more on my drain life sounds pretty good for only 1 talent point. This is what my build currently looks like.

If I were to do it again I would drop improved lifetap, and maybe a point or two from suppression and put them into grim reach and then start into demo. Based on what I'm finding and liking so far this is what I think I might build towards on my next respec.

While I don't plan on letting my pets fight much more I think the extra stamina and intellect from the fel talents would be worth it. I think I'd get much more out of those than building towards shadowburn.

I haven't seen a build quite like this before, so I was wondering why others might be against it (if they are).

Re: Am I crazy or just stupid?

About nightfall,
Seems like your voidwalker is your thing. Shadowbolt, for myself and many others, is my thing. Being able Cast a Shadowbolt while running or jumping adds a much needed level of dynamic gameplay to the rinse and repeat grind that locks are so use to. Plus the sound is so cool, you can almost feel it going off in your hand.

Recently I went Demonology with a minor in destruction. I put my last point into Ruin instead of fel guard and my crit power is out of control combined with the added bonus damage plus my now 20% spell crit rating thanks to demonology .

Unfortunately I had to give up Nightfall and despite my dominating the damage ratings in groups I miss the simple pleasures of hitting a boss with sometimes three or four shadowbolts in under six seconds, or dropping down from ledges busting a shodowbolt in bitches faces in mid air =P

Re: Am I crazy or just stupid?

Since working more and more with the imp I have begun to like it quite a bit. I haven't used the VW in a few days and haven't really missed it either. I'm sure I will still occassionally find some uses for him, but it will probably be sacrifice and suicide missions.

I have also noticed in this massive 3-5 pulling of mobs and hitting the IHoT that nightfall could actually be quite usefull. Heck, with 3-5 corruptions on at a time and some draining nightfall will proc A LOT! It could be a very effective and fun way to finish off a ton of mobs. With this idea in mind I have since come up with the following idea for my talents:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=IEMriRfkqtbofx00c
I'm obviously not dead set on this, and am debating about the use of Imp LTap. With good use of DP I won't really need to tap as much. I've debated about what to do with those 2 points. I considered Fel Stamina, Fel Intellect and Fel Domination. I just don't know how much that extra intellect or stamina would really help me. I really like the idea of cutting my pet summoning time by 5.5 seconds, but I also know that it's not crucial (and it would still leave me with 1 more point to spend).

So I'd love to hear some feedback on that build as well as suggestions if I dropped Improved Life Tap.

Re: Am I crazy or just stupid?

The build you have is fine, should be great to farm/grind with. Its sub par for instancing and raids because you don't have ISB and Bane but that's fine.

Nightfall is useful to help bring mobs down faster. I prefer shadowburn instead but nightfall can work too.

Imp life tap is not necessary if you have dark pact but its still very nice. Just ask yourself how often you tap. You should probably do it every fight anyway, to max out SL's heals.

You really only need fel dom/master summoner if
a.)you pvp and switch pets a lot
b.)you value fast pet casttimes over other things (like burst damage for instance)
c.)you get into oh crap situations a lot and you like the safety of a 0.5s voidwalker shield.

Fel Stam and Fel Int will not help you much at all but if anything, you could drop about 4 points from wherever in affliction to get to feldom/Master Summoner. Its not going to help you grind any faster though. You summon an imp and it will never die unless you walk into lava.

Nice to see you got the hang of afflock grinding. ;)

Re: Am I crazy or just stupid?

Ok, I figured I'd throw my two cents in on this having leveled mostly as an Affliction Lock (with the exception of a couple of weeks I decided to try the FG craze). My build was affliction all the way up to UA. I also had the iHoT for when I needed to clear some room to cast. After getting UA and iHoT, I started putting points into Demo to get the extra HP. When using the Imp with Dark Pact, I only turned off his Fire Bolt. I left the Fire Shield ability and Blood Pact abilities on to up my HP and give me an additional source of damage when struck by melee. My usual setup for single pulls was UA->Immo->CoShadow->Siphon Life->Corruption->Drain Life. When I planned to take on multiple mobs, I liked using the Succubus with her seduce power turned off. I would fully DoT one mob then fear it with Succubus chasing after it. The next mob would get just the instant DoTs (Curse of Agony, Siphon Life, Corr.) then I would start a pattern of Drain Life and Life Tap. Usually with a full load of DoTs and the Succubus, the first mob was dead first, then Succu would come back to help finish off the 2nd mob. At the end of the fight, if i was short any mana, I would life tap then cannabalize the 2nd mob's corpse (if i was fighting humanoids--- and fyi, I'm an Undead Warlock). Sta wise, I focused on Sta and Int gear and also tried to make sure I was stocking up on +damage gear. I went the roll of Enchanter so that I could make oils to add +damage to my weapons and slap +Sta and +Int to my gear.

Re: Am I crazy or just stupid?

Actually if you just used the imp over the succubus for any situation, you're probably going kill stuff faster in the long run. Its also a lot easier and you can pact freely and continuously kill over an extended period of time

Honestly if you like tanking with your vw, you'll probably LOVE felguard. He holds aggro better and does a ton of damage.

Re: Am I crazy or just stupid?

I'd hope ydnandrew is a bit higher than level 51 now, and has fully mastered drain tanking, or indeed any of his chosen specs.

The last post until today was well over a year ago!

Try not to necro-post. Thanks.
