Male/Ruin spec + socketing

Hi people. Been lurking around quite a bit on this site. Alas, the time has come to make a post. Our guild has been progressing nicely and have cleared ZA, downed Mag, Lurker and Morogrim (as of last night).

I'm currently running affliction as 42/8/11, http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/...10000000000000. My role in the raid changes fairly often, in my opinion. Depending on encounter, I'm either with the healers/tanks during Malacrass and during 25-mans with the other lock/mages/ele shammy/boomkin. Edit: Oh, and we're usually running with 2 locks (affl & destru), 2 fire mages, boomkin, SP and ele shammy.

I've been thinking for a week or two about the possibility of going for a Male/Ruin build. This would mean loosing UA (17,1% of damage on Dr. Boom), loosing Imp. Imp (310 more hp ... not really a big issue) and loosing DE (15% hp) and possibly loosing a few points in Contagion for 5/5 SE. My main concern regarding this is loosing DE. Granted, stam isn't a vital stat while raiding, I do however find it useful when it comes to LT and AoE during certain encounters. (Especially during Malacrass.)

The build I'm leaning towards is this one, 40/0/21. http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/...12200010000000. 4/5 SE and 4/5 Contagion. I can't decide which one to max, or just leave it.

With my current build I have 8430 hp, 8620 mana, 1113 shadow spell damage, 204 hit and 15,24% crit chance unbuffed.

As for the socketing, I had Hood of Hexing drop for me a week or so ago and I have yet to gem it. *Slaps self* As much as I completely adore Cpimp's equipment gear and (almost) follow it religiously, I can't make up my mind on how I should socket it. Any thoughts regarding my other gem choises and gear is appreciated as well.

Any thoughts and opinions are welcome and appreciated.

(Apologies if this ended up in the wrong section, feel free to move if you find it more suitable elsewhere.)

Re: Male/Ruin spec + socketing

Imo all warlock builds are good..and each one is good for a type for encounter. Had myself the builds you posted and on multiple targets UA > RUIN, on a Vashj fight ie. Being in middle and spamming UA on everything beats the ruin build. But on single target RUIN rullz being the fact that SB is the best dps you can get from our spells. This depends ofc of the crit rating you have...but with your currents stats i would go for sm/ruin build. You can compare it and tell us some result.

Gearwise at your level UA will be better then ruin. Into T6 content this will change there are many threads about this on the search function. Max SE imho utility>personal dps given the way you spec. Also for your hood go with crimson spinals they will give you the best dps boost.

"Not Applicable".

Additional Comments:

Ok, here's the deal. Just joined this new guild. After the first raid one of the other locks sends me a tell, on behalf of the Warlock Officer(he was asked to, I checked to make sure he wasn't just trying to make me look bad), and told me I'd do more damage as UA Spec. I told him he was wrong, as I know. So he told me about leleuirs(sp?) which I told him I use and it proves Destro to be a increase for me.

After a while he basically informs me that they need a Utili-Lock, and that's the reason I should go UA. I still think that I'd be better off malediction/ruin. At first he argues with me. I really didn't want to argue too much seeing as I'm new to the guild, so I figured I'd ask for advice here.

I did plug my gear and both specs into the DPS Spreadsheet, and the UA build comes out about 1.5 DPS ahead. However, that is with my crit as-is. I decided to do some testing with some more "realisitic" crit figures. What's interesting is I found that by either increasing my crit to 35% -or- by lowering it to 15%, both of which can and have happened to me, the DPS in the Ruin build goes up by about 100.

According to my figures then, I am better off with Malediction/Ruin, correct?

Re: malediction/ruin?

How well are you performing on the damage meters? As a lock you can easily obtain a position within the top 5, usually top 3. If you don't, then it would be best to move on to a support build and let the others benefit more. That means 5/5 SE, 3/3 Mal, 3/3 Imp. Imp, and the right HS config that allows your raid to have 3 HS if you have 3 locks. In this case, a UA build would provide you with the best talent build for these criteria. You are able to deal fantastic damage as Affliction is unhindered, while supporting the raid immensely. By going Mal/Ruin, you are reducing some of the utility you could have provided, not to mention.

I am confused with your current build. Armoury lists you as Felguard specced while your proposed current talent build is 0/21/40. Which is it?

Re: malediction/ruin?

I've been switching specs a lot lately. So that's why my armory shows that. Personally, I realize that I could do more as Destro, easily could have topped the other Destro Locks in that guild as the most DPS they were putting out was 1200-1400. I have easily put out more than that, and they "outgear" me, though they appear to be gemmed wrong, and a few other mistakes on enchants. Even as Meldiction/Ruin, I was top 5-10 in most fights, and 3 on one attempt. However, they still made me go affliction for their raids, when they already had another Affliction Lock, in the raid.

I had gone Felguard spec the other night, as I was helping a friends guild in SSC, as they had no Leo tank. Basically though, that guild was stupid. Bringing 2 Aff locks to BT, and the other Destro locks were not performing as well as they should have been in that content IMO. Yet they refused to let me go Destro, as according the them, the Min stats for Destro are 1300 +Shadow, 28-30% Crit, and Hit Capped of course.

We spent 2 hours wiping on RoS, getting it to Phase 3 on all but 1-2 attempts, and usually in the 5%-10% range. When I mentioned that we don't really need two Aff locks and I could go back Destro, they said that I don't have the stats for it, and would lose most of my DPS. Which is funny, cause I've been Destro, and on most T5 fights, I get in the 1700-1900 range if they are stand and nukes, which RoS seemed pretty close to one to me. Yet they told me that's impossible with my gear, lol.

Anyway, I ended up leaving the guild and am back in a guild that is just breaking into 25-man content again, so I am back to Felguard build as it's just fun in Kara/Gruul/Mag, and allows me to tank Leo w/o having to re-spec when we get there.
