Re: builds for lower gear
i'm a lock reroller aswell since i came back to wow and got the same prob, a lot of high end talent discussions but little for us lowbies, i havent quite figured out whats best atm with the new talents and all, currently demo with meta and putting the final few in destro. however for Wrath of the Lich King im thinking of a felguard/destro build when leveling up (0/43/18 or something along the lines of that) havent tried it yet but should give adequate dps in the 5 mans when leveling up and good for solo/2 man questin in Wrath of the Lich King. |

Re: builds for lower gear
I was considering soft siphon/felguard/cataclysm when its time to level. When I was going from 60-70 the 9 points in affliction were REALLY good to have, most of the time while I was getting used to being demo, I would pull one or two mobs with felguard, and focus fire one to death with a CoE(or Curse of Agony)>cor>SB>LT>DL> and either switch to DS if I needed shards, or let DL finish the mob.. fel's cleave kept the other mob on him and allowed me to make easy switch to next target, I could effectively chain pull for several minutes before stopping.. mostly to heal my felguard.. I think the addition of imp SB and cataclysm will help in the leveling respect since in 5mans and in solo the increased hit chance and reduced mana cost will help increase damage from lack of misses and such as well as minimize time spent regening, this also ties into having imp LT, and soul siphon. **I use the term soft siphon to describe the area of the spec that reduces life lost from life tap, and the bonus from siphon soul..just for clarification!!! I may test this build out before box ships, just to see how well it works.. I have been trying to look up the quest rewards and starter dungeon gear to get an idea of where I can level/gear effectively.. but both starter areas seem pretty close!!

Re: builds for lower gear
I'm a little confused here. Are you looking for lower level builds like around level 30-40? Or are you looking for builds for a level 70 but in all blue/green gear? If your in the level range of say 20-50 I would say go w/a hybrid type build. On the other hand a heavy demonology build would be best imo for a level 70 with non epic gear. With the EoD patch live a heavy affliction build would prolly workto at 70also. When I say a hybrid type build for lower lvls it would look something like this improved health stone from demo, shadowburn from destro, and the rest in aff. I hope this helps. |

Re: builds for lower gear
I apologize for the confusion.. I started this thread for locks who are either 70, or getting close to 70, and in low end gear eg: quest/non-heroic gear up to some kara/bg gear.. I thought this was important since at this point the likely hood of fresh warlocks getting into places such as BT/SWP are unlikely, but as was stated earlier a number of posts referencing EoD patch spec/builds have been by and large for the upper teir raiding. The idea is to give new/reroll/returning warlocks advise>pointers>experience in how to get ready for Wrath of the Lich King as best as possible. Xyon- I edited the talent build and made a few corrections.. I was a bit hungover when I made it and was rushing to get to bed lol... I moved three points out of imp cor to suppresion to give the extra +hit in affliction.. this with cataclysm should help some not only now while farming, or doing whatnot but it will also help as you level in northrend since having those points, and on-armor hit you won't have as much issue if you pull higher level mobs! I'll be testing this build tonight, lemme know what you think, or if you have any better ideas!

Re: builds for lower gear
I am in this exact same boat. But I am very glad this thread was made as I too have a hard time speaking up as I don't raid so don't have high end gear. To be honest I feel sort of ashamed for posting as I look up and see that the last time I logged in was June 29, 2007. Where does all the time go? I haven't been around much but my lock is 70 and geared in blues and greens. With the exception of the tailored 3-piece Frozen Shadoweave set. Back in May of 2007 there was a member here named Canadianpimp who had posted an awesome gear guide for folks who don't raid. He had listed the best items to acquire from questing, AH and trade skills which would still yield respectible gear at 70. I had always been demonology but it has been a long time since I have had to think about specs. So long in fact that I don't recall what the spec was but I am sure I have it written down. Ahhhh...after I posted this I saw my spec info in the character info. It was the trusty old 7/43/11. Having said all that, I would love to know what the current better build is for a solo'ing, pve lock with low end gear and who doesn't raid. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Reggie. Re: builds for lower gear
to be honest, from what I have tested (on targets), and seen from others in the low range, there so far has been no set spec really.. I have tried to stick advising newer locks to try various specs.. Ill give you some examples of what I did when i got my lock to 70.. and farmed out 1,00g for speccing. I chose to wait for patch 3.0.2 since their were many changes coming and I knew I would be getting a free spec off the bat. I spent ALOT of time on WoW head, and on wotlkwiki looking at the latest updates, watching the trees develop (this is old habit from my raiding priest days) and tried to find a tree that I could see myself going deep into. I first decided to go affliction, since this was the tree I leveled with from 10-60 and I still remembered the playstyle.. I tried this tree in multiple battlegrounds, normal pve encounters, world pvp encounters and dungeon setting. I kept a Recount record of my damage, my damage relative to my party, and various other info. I did this with 51 points in the selected tree and threw various points in places of interest. after I got a good look at what the talents for each tree did on their own, I started playing mix and match with various Talent teirs, this is by far the most difficult part of testing. Its hard to keep finding a new place to put points when you find one talent/ability that is just soo nice, but you know it won't fit what you are trying. at this point you should gain a fair understanding of how comfortable you are in a certain tree. Once you found "YOUR" tree, this is when I started breaking down how I cast my spells, and in what order my spells are cast (referred to as "rotation") and from this you should be able to deduce with out lengthly equations, with out spreadsheets, how you think you will be function as a warlock. it is worth noting that if you choose to raid in wrath of the lich king, doing your homework on builds, and haveing confidence in your build can go a long way! sorry bout this being rant style, I figure showing you a process might help you jumpstart one on your own. Right now there is just not many people who are in our range and thus, would be hard to find the new "opener" tree. I try my best, as I know many others do, to find information, test information and put it out there for people to see. I am always my worst critic, and I welcome the critique of others. Don't be afraid to post concerns, questions, suggestions. as Rob Gilbert once said - "Its all right to have butterflies in your stomach...just get them to fly in formation." oh, but if you just want to have fun I would really look at 16/45 <<click on my profile talent link! I LOVE it

Re: builds for lower gear
Actually, for farming/levelling purposes, i've been suggesting people try 21/40/0 for Siphon Life/Voidwalker - you petattack/SiLi/Curse of Agony/Corr/Life Tap and tab to the next mob. Even in my shit gear (S2 weap/offhand and 2xS2 Dreadweave/2xS2 Felweave) I'm hitting 1k spelldamage with a Voidy out and can literally farm nonstop against anything that has/had a pulse. Plus it sets you up at L71 to get your felguard for added goodness. As a bonus, it really requires very few points to work, so it will work nicely all the way through levelling (first 21 in aff till Siphon Life then the next 40 building out the Demonology tree) and it should be fairly decent for levelling in the expansion. Oh and you don't need to bother fear chaining the mobs, because once your VW has let a torment or two off, they're dead as they run at you. Last edited by Etrigan; November 03, 2008 at 10:10 AM.. |
