3.1 Affliction 56/0/15 - good gear - whats wrong?

Hi guys

I'm only getting 2.2-2.5k dps (10 man buff) so I was wondering how am going wrong

My spec is Affliction (56/0/15) Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft
My gear The World of Warcraft Armory
My Rotation is Life tap (Rank 1) - Huant - Corruption - Shadow Bolt - Unstable Affliction - Curse of Agony... Then spam Shadow bolt in between renew the DoTs
My Glyths are Life Tap, Unstable Affliction and Haunt
My Spell stats are (with fel Armour but no pet or other buffs):

Spell Power : 2236

Hit Rating : 348 (13.27% + 3% from Surpression)

Crit Rating : 13.48%

Haste : 410 (12.5%)

Please Help... I hate being called shit by my guild.

Ozzmend (80 Warlock) - Bronzebeard (EU)

PS: Please don't say spec destruction cause I hate playing dustruction, it just feels awkward.

3.1 Re: Affliction 56/0/15 - good gear - whats wrong?

53/1/17 is considered the affliction raid spec. So I won't get too much into that. Fel Conc is a waste of 3 points for a raider, and you don't have the 2 points in Drain Soul. Amp Curse is also generally considered a waste of a point that is better off in another location. Switch to a glyph of corruption (instead of UA), and you'll get about twice as many shadow trances.

Your spell power is good, but your hit looks under-par. Unless you always have a draenei in the group (or maybe a shadow priest?), you need 368 hit. If you're missing, you could be seeing huge losses in DPS.

I'm jealous of your haste rating.

Make sure you have some sort of audible alert so you know when shadow trances occur. (Such as PowerAura or Necrosis-LdC.)

Use CoE instead of Curse of Agony, unless you have someone else providing the 13% magic buff. In my testing, it's about a wash whether you use Curse of Agony or CoE in T7.5-T8.0 gear. So if there are other magic casters and nobody else provides it, toss CoE and simplify your rotation.

My preferred opening depends on whether it's a run-in or if the boss comes to us. If it's a run-in, toss CoE then Corruption, then settle down and put UA and Haunt on and start your SB spam. The succy can be left on defensive in almost all of Ulduar, just make sure she's on the right target. Over the long run, the opening sequence on a boss fight doesn't matter a whole lot.

...

Since I see Ulduar gear, I will assume that you are in Ulduar, so that's where I'll spend most of my time.

Ulduar is not overly friendly to affliction warlocks due to the constant target changes. If you're forced to do adds on Ignis, your DPS is not going to be good at all as your DoTs drop off of Ignis while you're chasing brittles. Same thing goes with XT, if you have to deal with the adds, your DPS is going to be poor.

Our guild makes the mages or elemental shammies do adds on Ignis. I usually try to keep an eye on things, and will hold onto a shadow trance buff for an extra few seconds if it looks hairy and the mages are falling behind.

On XT, I'm generally allowed to stay on the boss/heart, as my DPS goes up a long ways if I don't have to constantly switch targets to adds. I've actually come close to 4k in Ulduar-10 on XT. Especially if we have a shaman along for buffs.

Razorscale can be affliction friendly. As soon as she lands each time, get your DoTs up and spam as many shadow bolts as possible. Refresh your DoTs right before she takes off. Razorscale is also an ideal fight for using the Doomguard. Turn off his rain-of-fire ability and keep a close eye on him. The healers will quietly thank you for stunning the adds for 2 seconds every 20.

Kologarn is very tank-spank. Put your teleport down where you're supposed to stand so that you can quickly return and go back to DPS after running from eye beams. Toss a SoC on the adds about 10 seconds after the tank rounds them up, but don't worry too much about them (maybe a 2nd SoC a few seconds later).

Basically, a good fight for me in Ulduar is breaking 3k on the boss, and if I'm spot on with execution, that can be up in the 3500-4000 range over the entire boss fight. I don't worry much about trash, but try to stay in the 2500 range. I can't keep up with the rogues or hunters, but I'm a fair piece ahead of the mages.

A lot of it is knowing the fights in Ulduar, knowing ahead of time when I'm going to have to move, so that I can plan refreshes on insta-cast stuff, or figuring out when to stop and cast before moving again.

Practice on the heroic dummies for 5 minutes at a go, until you have a very good feel for the rhythm of refreshing DoTs while staying on top of Haunt.

(We've beat everything up to Yoggy... he's our current project.)

Do THIS and DO NOT forget to drain soul below 25% boss health.

edit: the UA glyph is worthless and so is the corruption glyph

Xav, quick related but different question.. I see that you are using a 56/16/0 build - I assume for PvP - do you like it or are you just experimenting.. and what rotation are you using with it...

Thanks!

PvP does not have a set rotation. It's mostly about action and reaction. I personally always open up with UA to prevent any of my DoTs from being cleaned off, or at least discourage it greatly. Just throw up your DoTs and drain life.

And for the love of god, if you see any class that's melee or has a snare, put up your circle!
