Drain Soul......A powerful DOT?!!
Ok here's the deal, I've been using rank 1 of Drain Soul for the longest time cause it was only useful at the least second of a fight to get a shard. But yesterday as I was soloing dragons in Burning Steps I noticed in my battle log the Drain soul Rank 1 was ticking for 150dmg, so I was like WTF! I open my spellbook and drag Drain Soul rank 4 to my hotbar and i let it fly...... Iwas getting it to tick at 260dmg per tick!!!!!!! That is as strong as my corruption ticks!!!!!!!! 298 mana for a 15 secs spells at 260dmg a tick........ Is my toon bugged?!! It's too good to be true! /cheers |

yeah the dots now get a bigger bonus from the stuff. That's one of the main reason for the recent uprising against warlocks. |

it does more damage but it still suffers from the same problems that make me use the rank 1 version. not worth standing still for 15sec draining a soul while i could be draining life, shadowbolting, kiting around, etc. i still just cast it within the last couple seconds before the target dies so i dont really get any ticks in. 55mana for a shard (or even more mana returned with imp soul drain) is hard to beat. |

When I need a shard, I usually send the felguard, cast corruption and agony, and just let loose with the drain soul. All that together finishes off the enemy fast, and I usually get a nice mana refund back from Improved Drain Soul. Honestly I like the extra speed from using the highest rank, as opposed to forcing the timing to get the greater mana refund by using the lowest rank. I have so little downtime when farming anyway... I can always make it up on the next mob by using Drain Life or Mana Drain. |

Ya, I noticed my Drain Soul Rank 1 was getting decent damage in return. But like most others here, Drain Life is probably the better choice in PVP especially, as it returns the life and you can always cast the rank 1 Drain soul and if you have some points in Drain Soul you get some decent mana back. I don't think he was meaning the Felguard doesn't need a shard. I think he was just saying how he 'gets shards'. |

I DoT, DoT, and DoT... if I need life, I Drain Life. If I don't, I Drain Soul. It does alot of damage and it's more mana efficient (lasts 3x as long as Drain Life), so really, you can't go wrong with it. |

I looked at this thread and thought, "wow, I hadn't really played with drain soul much to really check." However, you've encouraged me to do some digging, and looking at the maths, drain life is still significantly better than drain soul. Now, I admit I'm no expert on all the factors for +damage , but here's the maths as I have done it. This is based on an affliction build which includes 5 pts into SM, and is ignoring the improved drain life bonuses. For the example, I'll be working with +250 shadow damage, which is both a nice round figure, and obtainable for most players to boot. Drain Life Formula = Base damage + (gear damage / 2) * 1.1 (SM bonus) Base damage = 71/second * 5 seconds = 355 Total damage over 5 seconds = 355 + (125) * 1.1 = 492 Drain Soul Formula = Base damage + (gear damage) * 1.1 (SM bonus) Base damage = 500-501 / 15 seconds Total damage over 15 seconds = 501 + 250 * 1.1 = 826 Over the 15 seconds Drain life = 492 * 3 = 1476 Drain soul = 826 If we want to give the benefit of the doubt to drain soul, lets make it only 2.5 drain life's are used Drain life = 492 * 2.5 = 1230 Drain soul = 826 Additionally, most fights in groups don't last 15 seconds, so it may be worth looking at the comparison from the drain life side. 1 x Drain life = 492 damage over 5 seconds 1/3 x Drain soul = 275 damage over 5 seconds Not to mention, drain soul is a "per tick" spell, whereas drain life is a "per second" spell, which I feel gives it an advantage over drain soul. There is going to be a point where with enough +damage gear, drain soul will become better in terms of short term (5 second) damage, and the full 15 second damage. However, my mathematical skills fall down at this point, so if someone can help with this that'd be great.
