Re: upcoming patch and demonic tactics

Kind of sad that a Tier 8 talent might do the same thing as a Tier 3 talent in destruction (devastation)

Re: upcoming patch and demonic tactics

It's kind of sad that with 0/40/21 you have 10% crit (which is when going heavy demonology). When going heavy destruction you only can have max 8% crit (devastation + backlash).
I'm only saying about this because it was always destruction that was the damage/crit tree. Now I have the feeling that some trees have lost their specific identity.

Re: upcoming patch and demonic tactics

I agree. Since the new talents I have thought of Affliction as the dot tree, Demonology for straight dps, and Destruction for high crits. But yes, they seem to be mixing things up, the new Demonic Tactics seem like it should be in the Destruction tree.

Re: upcoming patch and demonic tactics

You know, I like the new trees very much (in patch 2.0 they really added great stuff and all), but the trees are not as specific as they were some time ago.
Before, it was something like:
Affliction - DoT tree / leveling.
Demonology - survivability / defense.
Destruction - burst damage / pvp king.

Although Affliction and Destruction are almost the same in their purpose and character, Demonology has been modernised to a tree that can't be defined with 2-3 words. I don't know, what the devs have in mind, but the fact is that they seriously mixed things recently. And adding 5% crit to the Demonology tree is another proof of that.

Just some thoughts. ;]

Re: upcoming patch and demonic tactics

Doesn't bother me if they give us a free respec.

I'm only demo till 70, so I'll cope. 5% isn't so much. What really bugs me is that since The Burning Crusade they have nerfed both the 31 and 41 point demo talents and played with dot damage, but no repsec. If they nerf the 40 point as well with no respec I'm going to be particularly miffed.

So go ahead and change it, just give me a free spec out to go back to affliction.

Re: upcoming patch and demonic tactics

Destruction still is the pvp king, but they are no longer the only spec capable of monster crits. Im 0/40/21 now while my crits and damage may be off the chart lets not forget all of the amazing instant cast and utility spells and abilities that destro locks get. Nether protection, conflag, shadowfury, and lets not forget the insta casts from backlash. I have no instant nukes besides shadowburn.
Now what i have that destro locks dont is a ton of hitpoints, spell damage, and now crit. IMO its an even trade off and destro locks are still far superior in pvp. A string of insta cast crits can really take most toons down a few notches if not to the point of death.f
Oh and lets not forget that the highest dps build used to be sm/ruin not straight destruction.

I may be one of the few that's excited about the switch; 0/40/21 is going to be a devestating build.

Something like this, for example, gives you a base crit rate of 17% for Searing Pain, and base 10% crit for immolate/SB/Sburn/Incinerate.

I'm with you Gritz. Regarding your build, I'm torn between Intensity and Improved Searing Pain. Choices...choices...

5% more damage is a increasing everytime you get more damage per 100 damage that is 5 +damage extra. 5% crit should be in theory about the same, except it's a static number.

if you have 500 +damage, 5% damage is 25 +damage on average extra in 100% of all your damage abilities

if you have 500 +damage, 5% crit is 25 +damage on average extra in the 20% (if you critrate is 20%) of your direct (critable) damage abilities.

So bascily you lose 100% damage increase on all not critable abilities and lose about 80% (if you critrate is 20%) extra damage on the critable abilities.

If you look at the talents spend, this talent is about 80% gimped, made 100% useless for affiction demonologist locks and for the destro demo locks it's still gimped bigtime.

I think your better off using 0/21/40 build from now on with shadow and flame if you destro/ demo because the damage bonus will be bigger

I would pick intensity anytime over imp searing pain. First threat issues with searing pain, secondly if you are under attack a interrupted (or delayed) searing pain does far less damage then 70% uninterruptable incinerate imo
