I lack huge DPS ! How is that possible !
Hello fellow locks, After 2 years of struggle and being on many many guilds i managed to get in to an High-End raiding guild. (t5 level) . After a few raids ( 40 raids -.-) i realized that my DPS sucked very hard specially on trash < 1 minute. I really dont know what i am doing wrong and need help !!! Current gear : I have full t4 and got 3 pieces of t5 which i am using for trash . my HIT is capped 202 (16%) and that is with 0/5 in suspression my crit is 13% and my build is (41/0/20) with 5/5 in devastation my damage is 1040 fire etc and 1142 shadow . my spellrotation on < 1 minute trash is : Curse of Shadows , Corruption , immolate , Siphon Life , Unstable Affliction and 1 or 2 x Shadowbolts ( the exact order which i am using) . a fellow lock told me to ditch siphon life and UA on my spell rotation and shoud focus on SB spamming . (Tryed it today but it dropped my DPS even more) another lock told me to go : Curse of Shadows , Corruption , UA , Immolate ,Siphon Life and shadowbolt. ( which also resulted in a big fail) Both my trinkets r bind to my DOTS and Spells so i dont forget to use it. Im also using Quartz with the \stopcast macro Im also using Deathcoil when its up and Shadowburn to do the finishing blow. I barely use Soulfire and Searing pain I use lifetap/Darkpact only when im out of mana I ditched my frozen shadowweave set long time ago for my t4 because i think that the 4 x set bonus of t4 is much better as 3 x Frozenshadowweave . A fellowguildie ( a lock ) with the same gear and Build is doing much more damage as me . So people what the hell am i doing wrong !!!! |

Re: I lack huge DPS ! How is that possible !
When I was affliction, my trash rotation was something to the extent of CoS>Corr>Sbolt, extending to CoS>Ua>Corr>Sbolt and then Curse of Agony>Ua>Corr>Sbolt, the first rotation for the primary target, the second for the secondary target, and the last one for the last few tanked mobs. Another thing worth noting is that as an Ua build, your DPS is going to SUCK!!!! on trash. knowing that, i just tried my best to be efficient and smart with my dots. another lock in my guild would throw all of his dots on trash, and while he did a bit more damage, i always had a lot of mana left and my dots always went for the whole duration. Anyway, trash dps means nothing, its all about the bosses where we shine.

I would have to agree that damage on trash is a pointless measure for an affliction lock. If you really want to improve your trash damage then spec 40/0/21 for ruin and play trash like a destro lock. CoS > Corruption > SB spam. The best way to find out where your fellow similarly spec'd locks are doing their damage is to use the recount damage meter. Very very very useful as it shows what spells the others are doing their damage with and will help you to put together a better spell rotation. You will probably find that they are doing a fair percentage of their trash damage with Curse of Agony which you aren't using. Hope this helps, but imo only judge your boss damage, especially if you are on CoS duty. |

DOT everything that is tanked. Only use dots that will run the full duration otherwise just shadowbolt UA>Corr are your most powerful dots. Your dps will ALWAYS suck on trash as affliction, use shadowburn for finishers as much as possible but dont worry boss dps is what counts. If you run with other aff locks you might want to think about a change to demo/destro if your gear will support it. |

from what i've been reading.. most of you all use CoS instead of Curse of Agony? My rotation is UA > Curse of Agony > Corr > SiphLife > SB > SB.. ect.. i do pretty decent damage.. usually top 3 on the charts in SSC/TK ect.. If you have more than one lock in your raid.. I'm sure ONE of them is destro... have him throw up CoS.. cause they probably are anyways... use Curse of Agony instead...

Re: I lack huge DPS ! How is that possible !
Generally in a raid you will never use Curse of Agony. I bring 3 locks to my raids. 1 aff/2 destro. The affliction lock is maladict he gets a utility curse we run pretty shadow heavy 3 arcane frost mages, 3 locks, 2 spriests... hence use CoS>CoE with maladict the destro locks are responsible for usually CoE and CoR. We also raid with an ele shaman. We run a full melee group(dps war with imp demo) with a hunter group as the third dps group. Generally unless your raid is horribly favoured to one caster/melee type you will want to put up a utility curse and not have room to use a dps curse. Agony is wasted on trash anyways as the heaviest damage is at the end and I rarely see a mob last a lot longer then 24 seconds in trash. Bosses get CoD as a dps curse as it is much better damage. *** Information added 1 Minutes and 44 Seconds later... *** @Facemurder you should pair UA and Corr with the same duration they will be much easier to track |

Re: I lack huge DPS ! How is that possible !
ffs don't use immolate unless target is immune to shadow, (you have more shadow damage than fire anyway) stack some haste rating and SL > Curse of Agony > UA > Corr everything that's tanked and after that if you see a target having enaugh HP for shadowbolt, drop shadowbolt, if Shadowburn or Deathcoil available, finish off, if not - let the raid finish ant shadowbolt other targets (it's like noob sl/sl locks runing in bg's, Tab-SL-CA-Cor-repeat, but as you need to wacth aggro, you need to SB tanked one's when everything is dot'ed up), you can easy top trash damage meters, however if you miss treat meter you can greatly increase wipes on trash count :D P.S. sorry for my bad english Last edited by Cigaras; April 21, 2008 at 03:24 AM.. |

Re: I lack huge DPS ! How is that possible !
i cant use agony because me and an other lock are always on CoS/CoE duty because we have malediction . Second of all i cant multidot everything because they r mostly sheeped or off tanked , tried it a few times and yes i saw a little dps increase but it also casued a wipe . today im gonna try : Corruption -> CoS -> UA -> SB and let the results know . |

Re: I lack huge DPS ! How is that possible !
The whole reason for you not doing as much damage as you can is the fact that you are being way too rigid about your rotations on trash mobs. Correct me if you're wrong but when you say you're gona try a Cos->corruption->UA etc rotation, you're saying that, you have to stick to that rotation 100% on every single trash mob? That, IMO, is the reason you're not doing as much damage as you can. A good DPSer knows how to adapt and react to mobs. Don't just stick to a rotation because you have to. Use your brain. Look at a mob and then think: Is there more than one mob to dot and how fast is it going to die? Yes, i'll pick the one that is targetted last because I can put all my dots on it for the whole time before it dies. How fast is that mob going to die... hmmm about 6 or 7 seconds. No, I won't waste my time casting a siphon life on it since i'll only get one tick off and 90% of it's duration will be wasted. Yes. I'll cast a shadowbolt on it since at least i'm going to get 2000 damage on to it before it dies. Not, "Oh no i just finished casting UA and the mob is dead" - you just wasted your mana and your time casting a spell that did no damage, or half the damage it should have done. From my experience, pretty much the only "rotation" i've used is a UA->Corruption rotation since I know that they will end at the exact same time. Other than that, a little more thought is required. Re: I lack huge DPS ! How is that possible !
Firstly, not doing a damage curse costs you 50DPS at most. Though that assumes CoS or the like won't be up anyway. Secondly we're at simular gear levels. Most DPS spreadsheets put me at 1140DPS assuming a perfect fight, with perfect casting orders, heals when I need them, perfect trinketing and no movement or interruption. Which is a lot of very silly assumptions. I lose 200DPS as a result of this in most fights with moderate interferance. Like gruul, or akilzon. And that means I'm draining life. I'm getting out DPSed myself, but this guy puts out 1150DPS on the same fights. I can't even do that. End of the day, you just have to do the best you can. I actually drain the healers less than other raid members, I'm tough, I don't suck up innervates and don't NEED a shadow priest in my group to do my damage for more than 3 minutes... You won't put out SICK DPS. You have gear on par with someone who'd downed a few T5ish bosses but if your guild's been there a while will get out done. If you're sub 800DPS, on the less crazy fights, you need to look into paying more attention to DoTs, not cancelling spells mid fight, and a few otyher things. Quote:

On trash living 30seconds + you should do okay usually actually. However your rotation should vary according to how long the mob llives. You should be aiming for 3 or 4 shadow bolts at least, once the DoTs are up. Maybe even 5 though running numbers will tell that more reliably than me. When several mobs are being tanked, and the mobs aren't trivial to tear down, I'll DoT one, then DoT the next. My raid leader wants to make sure that damage incoming isn't allowed to run up because all the mobs are being hosed. So I'll usually go back to the first at this point, who's nearly dead and my DoTs are almost gone. Providing a compromise between what I want to do, what the raid leader wants, and providing good DPS and so ending the *whole pull* faster. If that makes sense. As an afflock you have to think hard to benifit the raid. Which spells to cast and not. Whether fighting the lurker below, or phase 3 of zul jin (siphon life ftw. heals back 1600 damage) |
